Definitions
- the present invention relates to a hair washing support.
- the present invention relates to a hair washing support for use in washing the hair of a person of limited mobility, for example a bed ridden person.
- the shape of the gap is chosen so as to effect a modest seal between the neck of the person and the wall of the bowl.
- a chair is usually located close to the bowl so that a person sitting in the chair is able to lean backwards and incline their head such that their neck is located within the gap and the head effectively hangs for washing. In this position an attendant is then able to wash the hair.
- a conventional bowl without a head gap is used for the washing of hair while a patient is in bed.
- a waterproof sheet is used around the patient as a means of limiting wetting of the otherwise vulnerable bedclothes. With the raising of the head during the washing process the risk of hyperextension and unnecessary manipulation becomes significant.
- a hair washing support including a bowl, the bowl comprising a base having a circumferential wall upstanding therefrom, the wall defining an interior of the bowl; the wall including neck support means therein, and an inclined platform extending downwardly from the neck support means; the inclined platform capable of acting as a back support means; whereby in use the neck support means and inclined platform act together to support the back and neck of a user of the support with minimal hyperextension of the neck.
- the inclined support is integrally formed with the bowl, and is inclined so as to drain water into the interior of the bowl in use.
- the neck support means comprises a gap or cut out portion formed in a portion of the upper edge of the upstanding wall, the gap being shaped so as to allow a neck to be located comfortably therein.
- a neck support means would preferably usefully include an extended support directed towards the interior of the bowl.
- the neck support means additionally includes one or more drain channels therein, the drain channels being adapted to allow water to be drained from the neck support means into the bowl. It can thus be seen, that by providing a drain channel within the neck support means, any small quantities which may escape and otherwise flow on to the neck of the user of the bowl, thereby causing irritation will be prevented.
- the neck support means includes a drain channel located at each edge thereof.
- valve means and associated drainage equipment located in the base of the bowl.
- the associated drainage equipment may, for example, include sufficient tubing to allow the contents of the bowl to be emptied in an adjacent sink.
- the hair washing support of the present invention is formed of polyethylene.
- the support may be manufactured using a rotational moulding technique, thus producing a lightweight, yet sufficiently strong support.
- the lower surface of the hair washing support is adapted to engage a supporting surface.
- the hair washing support can be rested on a further surface, such as a table in use.
- the lower surface of the hair washing support engages a support by gripping means formed on or attached to the lower surface.
- the use of a gripping means assists in preventing the hair washing support from slipping on a surface.
- the hair washing support is adapted for stacking, thus enabling easy storage of a number of the supports.
- FIG 1 illustrates an upper perspective view of a hair washing support in accordance with a first aspect of the present invention
- FIG 2 shows a vertical cross-sectional view of the support of FIG 1 as taken along the line 2-2;
- FIG 3 illustrates the view of FIG 2 including the hair washing support in use;
- FIG 4 illustrates in vertical cross-sectional view two hair washing supports in accordance with a second aspect of the present invention
- FIG 5 shows the hair washing support of FIG 4 in lower perspective view
- FIG 6 shows the hair washing support of FIG 4 in upper perspective view.
- a bowl 1 including a base defined by a surrounding wall in which there are two side walls 2 and 3, a back wall 4 and a front wall 5.
- the front wall 5 is divided centrally by a gap 6 having a lower edge at 7 extending from an outside of the bowl to an inside and thereafter defining an internally located platform 8.
- the internally located platform 8 is shaped so as to provide support for the back of the head of a patient as shown at 9 and is further shaped so that when the bowl 1 is located on a horizontal surface, the upper surface is generally inclined so as to shed water into the body of the bowl.
- the bowl in the embodiment is formed so as to also integrally include an external inclined platform at 10 the shape and location of which is such that the back 11 of a person 9 will be relatively smoothly contoured from a ground support position at 12 through to a neck support position at 13 and thereafter the location of the internal platform 8 being such that the neck 14 will not be unduly extended or be caused to be hyperextended.
- the height and inclination angle of the platform 10 is selected to provide appropriate substantially uniform support across the back and shoulders of a patient, and whereas the embodiment shows and inclination angle of approximately 45° to the horizontal, this can be varied in particular instances in accord with the general principal indicated.
- a draining aperture at 15 arranged to feed draining liquid into conduits 16 which feeds through elongate gap 17 to an external location for collection in a different collection vessel.
- FIGS 4-6 illustrate a further embodiment of the present invention.
- the hair washing supports 20 shown Figs 4-6 share many common features with the supports shown in FIGS 1 -3 and like numerals will be used to refer to like parts.
- the hair washing supports 20 are conveniently adapted for stacking.
- the supports 20 include a V-shaped notch 22 cut into the lower surface of the supports 20 , upper circumferential edges 24 of the bowl 1 being shaped for insertion into the notch 22 of a further bowl 1 in a stacking arrangement.
- a busy hairdressing salon or hospital, or other user of the support of the present invention would possibly use many of the supports thereby creating a need for a space efficient method of storage.
- the notch 22 does not interfere with the operation of the drain valve 15.
- the support 20 also includes a pair of drainage channels 26 located on either side of the neck supporting internal platform 8.
- the drainage channels 26 collect any water which runs on to the neck of the user and allow the water to be drained into the bowl 1.
- the drainage channels 26 therefore minimise the irritation from small amount of water running onto the clothing and body of the user.
- the supports 20 also include a horizontal lowermost surface 28 which enables the support to be placed securely in position fro use. to further enhance the security of the positioning of the support 20, the surface 28 has a gripping area 30 thereon. By providing resistance to movement of the support in use the gripping means 30 increases the comfort of the user.
- the bowl can have the respective platform either integrally moulded into a single structure as shown in the embodiment or these can be joined as additional components so that there is a combined construction but which then together provides the arrangement as shown.
- the invention has particular application for patients who may be caused to be lying prone so that hospitals and nursing homes can thus provide preferred assistance to their patients.
- the construction of the bowl can be variously from injection moulded plastics, rotationally moulded plastics, foam moulded plastics or the like, and can be moulded from materials which provide a resilient surface to assist in comfort for a patient.
- the head of the patient can still be lifted slightly for washing at the back of the head but because this will not involve significant altering of the angular relationship of the head with the body, the chances of hyperextension or undue manipulation will be significantly reduced.
