Abstract
An endotracheal tube (10) has a temperature sensor (42) positioned proximal of a patient's larynx when the tube (10) is in use. Thus, the sensor (42) overlies the tongue. A heat insulator (46) and an electrical insulator (48) surround the temperature sensor (42). The temperatore sensor (42) can be linear or serpentine. An oxymeter (50) can also be used with the tube.
Claims
1. An endotracheal tube, comprising.
an elongate tubular member forming the body of said
endotracheal tube;
said elongate tubular member having a proximal end and a distal end. said distal end being positioned distal of a
patient's larynx when said endotracheal tube is in ε position for use;
a temperature-sensing means fixedly secured to an
exterior surface of said elongate tubular member;
a temperature insulating means disposed between said exterior surface of said endotracheal tube and said
temperature-sensing means;
an electrically insulating means disposed in overlying relation to said temperature-sensing means; and
said temperature-sensing means being positioned on said endotracheal cube at the tongue-contacting proximal end of said endotracheai tube.
2. The endotracheal tube of claim 1, wherein said preselected location is such that said temperature sensing means contacts the tongue of said patient when said endotracheal tube is in said position for use.
3. The endotracheal tube of claim 2, further comprising a temperature-insulating means disposed between said
temperature-sensing means and said elongate tubular member.
4. The endotracheal tube of claim 3, further comprising an electrically-insulating means disposed in overlying relation to said temperature-sensing means.
5. The endotracheal tube of claim 1, wherein said temperature-sensing means has a generally linear configuration.
