Abstract

The conveyor surface of a 'moving floor' comprises a number of planks (1) which are arranged alongside one another and in the longitudinal direction are movably supported on guide elements (2). The planks can be moved forwards as a unit and moved back one by one or successively a relatively small number at a time. The conveyor surface has air passages (3) for aeration of material lying on the conveyor surface, for example manure or waste to be composted. To prevent blockage of these openings (3) there are knives or scrapers (7; 8, 9) which, as the planks (1) are moved, are able to remove material which has infiltrated the air passages (3).

Description

Title: Conveyor installation in the form of a moving floor
The invention relates to a conveyor installation in the form of a moving floor, intended in particular for composting manure or waste, comprising: a conveyor surface in the form of a number of planks which are arranged alongside one another and in the longitudinal direction are movably supported on guide elements, means for moving a relatively large number of planks forward as a unit and for moving said planks back one by one or successively a relatively small number at a time, and air passages in the conveyor surface.
A moving floor of this type has been disclosed for composting waste. The material to be composted is fed to one end of the floor by means of feed bins. By moving three or more of the planks forward as a unit with the aid of hydraulic cylinders and moving these planks back one by one and feeding fresh waste step by step, the entire floor is covered with a 1 to 3 metre bed. Air is blown into the bed through the air passages. The composting process takes a few days and when this process is complete the compost is fed by means of the moving floor into discharge bins and removed. It has been found that the openings through which air is blown into the bed become blocked, as a result of which aeration becomes inadequate or even impossible.
The aim is to overcome this drawback and to this end the conveyor installation mentioned in the preamble is characterised by knives or scrapers which, as the planks are moved, are able to remove material which has infiltrated the air passages.
To make it possible not only to prevent blockages but also to adjust the size of the air passages, it is preferred that the planks rest, at a mutual spacing, with their longitudinal edges on the guide elements, that recesses are made in the upper surface of the guide elements, that cover wings are made on at least one of the longitudinal edges of the planks, which cover wings can close off or expose the recesses, depending on the position of the planks, and that a knife or scraper which protrudes into a recess in a guide element is fitted to the underside of said wings.
Excellent cutting of the material in the air passages is achieved with an embodiment in which the planks rest, at a mutual spacing, with their longitudinal edges on the guide elements, recesses are made in the upper surface of the guide elements and knives are fixed to both longitudinal edges of the planks, which knives each extend over one recess, the knives on one longitudinal edge lying with their lower surface approximately at the height of the upper surface of the knives on the other longitudinal edge, the arrangement being such that, when adjacent planks are moved, knives located in and over a recess move over one another with no or very little clearance.
The invention will now be explained in more detail with the aid of the figures.
Figure 1 shows a top view of part of a first embodiment of a moving floor according to the invention.
Figure 2 shows a cross-section along the line II-II in Figure 1.
Figure 3 shows a top view of part of a second embodiment of a moving floor according to the invention.
Figure shows a cross-section along the line IV-IV in Figure 3«
Both embodiments comprise a large number of long planks 1, which are positioned alongside one another with some mutual spacing and rest with their longitudinal edges on guide elements 2 in such a way that they are able to slide or glide over said guide elements. By means of a drive installation of hydraulic cylinders, which is known per se, the planks can be moved forward as a unit of three or more and moved back to the original position one by one (or a small number at a time) . For example, a body which is operated by a hydraulic cylinder is assigned to each plank, which body is or can be connected to the plank. If use is made of transverse connecting elements between the planks, a large number of planks can be moved as a unit and returned one by one using a single hydraulic cylinder or a small number of hydraulic cylinders.
A moving floor can form part of a composting installation for composting waste, manure or mushrooms. The material to be composted is deposited on the planks at one end of the planks and moved in the direction of the other end of the planks by means of the abovementioned movement mechanism. In this way a 1 to 3 metre thick layer is laid on the floor, which layer is left to stand for a few days, during which period it is aerated. When the composting process is complete the compost is transferred to discharge bins by means of the moving floor.
Aeration openings 3 are made in the moving floor for aeration. In general, the floor will form part of a tunnel, air being blown under some pressure into the space below the moving floor, which air flows via the aeration openings into the layer of material to be composted.
In the embodiments shown, the aeration openings 3 are recesses in the uppermost part of the guide elements 2. Said elements are made of plastic and rest on I-beams 4, which are fixed to the solid floor some distance apart.
In the longitudinal centre of the upper surface of the guide elements there is a raised section 5. which has a break in the vicinity of the openings 3-
In the embodiment according to Figures 1 and 2, each plank 1 is provided on one longitudinal side with a wing 6 which, depending on the position of the plank, can cover an aeration opening 3 (left side of Figure 1) or completely or partially expose said opening (right side of Figure 1).
Triangular knives or scrapers 7 are fixed to the lower surface of the planks and, during the backwards and forwards movements of the planks 1, said knives or scrapers move in the aeration openings 3 and remove the material which has infiltrated said openings. Blockage of the openings 3 is prevented as a result. The extent of the surface area of the openings 3 to be exposed for aeration can be adjusted with the aid of the wings 6 and the positioning of the planks. The aeration can thus be controlled. For example, the aeration surface area of the openings 3 on the longitudinal sides of the moving floor can be made smaller than that in the middle, as a result of which short-circuit currents along the side of the material to be composted are prevented.
The material which is removed from the aeration openings by means of scrapers or knives 7 falls onto a sloping solid floor of the installation and can be flushed away.
The embodiment according to Figures 3 and 4 does not have the wings 6; instead each plank is provided on two longitudinal edges with knives 8 and 9 respectively. The knives 8 on the left longitudinal edge of the planks lie with their lower surface at the same height as the lower surface of the planks 1. The knives 9 on the right longitudinal edge of the planks lie with their lower surface at the base of the recesses 3 in the guide elements and with their upper surface at the same height as the lower surface of the planks. The result is that, when two adjacent planks 1 move relative to one another, the knives 8 and 9 slide over one another and thoroughly cut up and remove the material which has infiltrated the recesses 3- The edges of the knives 8 are bevelled, those of the knives 9 are not. The cutting action is improved as a result.

Claims
1. Conveyor installation in the form of a moving floor, intended in particular for composting manure or waste, comprising: a conveyor surface in the form of a number of planks (1) which are arranged alongside one another and in the longitudinal direction are movably supported on guide elements (2) , means for moving a relatively large number of planks forward as a unit and for moving said planks back one by one or successively a relatively small number at a time, and air passages (3) in the conveyor surface, characterised by knives or scrapers (7; 8, 9) which, as the planks (1) are moved, are able to remove material which has infiltrated the air passages ( _\ ) .

Conveyor installation according to Claim 1, characterised in that the planks (1) rest, at a mutual spacing, with their longitudinal edges on the guide elements (2), in that recesses (3) are made in the upper surface of the guide elements, in that cover wings (6) are made on at least one of the longitudinal edges of the planks, which cover wings can close off or expose the recesses (3), depending on the position of the planks, and in that a knife or scraper (7) which protrudes into a recess in a guide element is fitted on the underside of said wings (6).

Installation according to Claim 1, characterised in that the planks (1) rest, at a mutual spacing, with their longitudinal edges on the guide elements (2) , in that recesses (3) are made in the upper surface of the guide elements and in that knives (8, 9) are fixed to both longitudinal edges of the planks, which knives each extend over one recess, the knives on one longitudinal edge lying with their lower surface approximately at the height of the upper surface of the knives (9) on the other longitudinal edge, the arrangement being such that, when adjacent planks are moved, knives (8, 9) located in and over a recess move over one another with and no or very little clearance.
