Description

PROTECTION SHEET FOR A SHEET OR COVER
The present invention relates specifically, but not exclusively, to document binders, particularly of the ring-binder type. These are typically of sheet-form construction comprising superposed front and rear sheet-form members foldably joined to a spine member and including a binding ring or similar arrangement secured to an inside surface of the rear member or spine member for holding documents within the superposed front and rear members.
Such binders are widely utilised. Students and school children, in particular, often decorate at least the outer surfaces of the front members of their binders by adhering thereto photographs or drawings, for example. However, handling of the binders can damage the decorated front surfaces leading to the binders becoming untidy in appearance. It is known to attempt to protect the surface decoration of a binder by applying a transparent adhesive film over the decorated surface. However, problems are encountered with cutting the adhesive film to an appropriate size and in applying the film over the decorated surface and doing so without trapping unsightly air bubbles between the film and the decorated surface. It is an object of the present invention to obviate and mitigate the aforesaid disadvantages.
According to one aspect of the present invention there is provided a sheet-form support member having a translucent sheet-form cover member hingedly secured thereto, said cover member having a surface to which an adhesive coating is applied and being arranged such that, in use, it can be adhered to partially cover a surface of the support member to protect from damage decoration placed on said support member surface.
Preferably, the support member is formed from a plastics material, or alternatively, is encased in a plastics material.
Preferably, the cover member is formed from a plastics material.
The cover member may be hinged to the support member by means of a flexible rib member which may be formed of a plastics material and which may be heat welded along one longitudinally extending edge portion to the support member and may be heat welded by an opposing longitudinally extending edge portion to the cover member.
Alternatively, the cover member may be hingedly secured to the support member by heat welding said cover member directly to said support member along a longitudinally extending edge portion thereof.
Preferably, the adhesive of the adhesive coating on the surface of the cover member is ready activated but is prevented from adhering to an adjacent surface of the support member by means of a peel-off protective cover, such as glossed paper. The support member may be a clipboard, folder or the like.
Preferably, the support member is a document binder which may be a ring-binder and may have the cover member hingedly secured thereto such that, in use, it partially covers an external front surface.
The cover member may be hingedly secured to the binder adjacent a spine member thereof.
According to a second aspect of the invention there is provided a method of protecting decoration placed on a surface of a sheet-form support member according to the next nine preceding paragraphs comprising the steps of:- a) placing decoration on said front surface; and b) progressively pressing a cover member into contact to adhere to the decorated surface in a direction away from a part of the support member to which the cover member is hingedly secured.
The foregoing and further features of the present invention will be more readily understood from the following description of a preferred embodiment, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings, of which:
Figure 1 shows a front perspective view of a document binder according to the present invention showing a translucent cover member before use (said cover member not including a peel-off protective cover) ;
Figure 2 is a front elevational view of the binder of figure 1 (said cover member including a peel-off protective cover) ; and
Figure 3 is a front elevational view of the binder of figures 1 and 2 illustrating application of the cover member to an external front surface of the binder. Referring to the drawings, there is provided a document binder 10 comprising front and rear superposed sheet-form members 12,14 foldably joined to a spine member 16. The binder 10 may include a ring binder arrangement (not shown) secured to an inner surface of the rear sheet-form member 14 or spine member 16 for holding documents within the binder 10 between the superposed front and rear members 12,14. The front and rear members 12,14 can be folded about said spine member 16 to lie in (their normal) superposed relationship or to lie substantially coplanar to afford access to the ring-binder arrangement to allow documents to be placed within the binder 10.
The binder 10 also includes a sheet-form translucent cover member 18 which, in use, can be adhered to partially cover an external surface 20 of the front member 12 of the binder 10. With the exception of the ring-binder arrangement, the binder 10 is formed from a single sheet-form member formed with folds to define the front, spine and rear members 12,14,16 respectively. The binder 10 may be formed from plastics material, or alternatively, from stiff cardboard covered by a plastics material.
The cover member 18 is formed from a plastics material and may be hingedly secured to the binder 10 by heat welding a longitudinally extending edge portion (not shown) of the cover member 18 to the binder 10 along a fold 21 between the front member 12 and spine member 16 of the binder 10.
Preferably, however, the cover member 18 is hingedly secured to the binder 10 by means of a strip- like rib member 22 which is preferably formed from a plastics material and is non-rigid. the cover member 18 is heat welded along a longitudinally extending edge portion 18' to an adjacent edge portion 22' of the rib member 22 which is secured to the binder 10 by heat welding an opposing longitudinally extending edge portion 22 ' thereof along a fold 21 between the front member 12 and the spine member 16 of the binder 10. The rib member 22 has a transverse width substantially less than that of the cover member 18. Typically the rib member 22 is ten millimetres in transverse width compared to a transverse width of three hundred millimetres for the cover member 18. The cover member 18 is preferably transparent such that, when it is adhered to said front surface 20, drawings, pictures or the like which are held against said front surface 20 by the cover member 18 are clearly viewable. However, it may be desired to provide binders 10 with coloured translucent cover members 18 to enhance the visual effect of the decoration viewed through said cover members 22.
In the preferred embodiment, the cover member 18 is coated on an inner surface with a ready activated adhesive thus allowing the cover member 18, in use, to be easily adhered to the front surface 20 of the binder 10. In such case, the inner surface of the cover member 22 has a protective glossed paper cover 24 applied thereto to prevent the member 18 adhering to said front surface 20 before use. It will be understood that the adhesive of the coating applied to the inner surface may be of non-activated type which requires wetting before use. In such case, a protective cover 24 as described above would not be required.
Figure 3 illustrates a method of applying the cover member 18 (having an activated adhesive coating protected by a glossed paper cover 24) to be adhered to the front surface 20 of the binder 10. In this figure it can be seen that the paper cover 24 is partially removed from the cover member 18 which is partially adhered to the front surface 20 of the binder 10. In use, the protective cover 24 is progressively peeled away from the cover member 18 in the direction of arrow A as shown in this figure while the cover member 18 is progressively pressed into contact with the front surface 20 of the binder 10 in the same direction signified by arrow B in the drawing. In doing, so, the cover member 18 is adhered to the front surface 20 without trapping unsightly air bubbles between said member 18 and the front surface 20 of the binder 10.
The cover member 18 allows decoration (numerated as 26 in figure 3) such as photographs, drawings or the like placed on or adhered to the front surface 20 of the binder 10 to be protected from damage caused by handling. The ease with which the cover member 18 is adhered to the front surface 20 of the binder 10 avoids the problems encountered with the known method of cutting and applying to said surface a protective adhesive film. The protective paper cover 24 may not extend the full width of the cover member 20 (see figure 2) , or alternatively, may extend to partially overlap an edge portion of the rib member 22.
In use, when placing decoration 26 in the form of photographs on the front surface 20 of the binder 10, it is preferable that such decoration does not extend to the edges of said surface 20 but that a margin is left to provide an area of contact for adhering the cover member 18 to said surface 20. Instructions to this effect could be printed on the protective paper cover 24 where such instructions would be readily viewable prior to using the cover member 18.
In another embodiment of the invention (not shown) , the cover member 18 is made larger than the front surface 20 of the binder 10 such that on application to the front surface 20 of the binder 10, it overlaps onto a rear surface of the front member 12 of the binder 10. This would negate the problem encountered where it was desired to place decoration in the form of photographs, for example, to cover all of said front surface and in doing so not providing a margin around the front surface 20 free for the cover member 22 to be adhered to.
It will be readily appreciated that the present invention is not restricted to document binders but to any article upon which it is desired to place decoration and thereafter protect said decoration by means of a translucent adhesive film. It is envisaged that the present invention could be readily applied to clipboards, folders or the like.
