Definitions

  • the present invention refers in general to windshield wiper devices for automotive vehicles and refers more particularly to a wiper unit of the type including a wiper- blade arm connected at one of its ends in an articulated joint to a connecting part equipped with means for its connection to a motorized shaft of a control device.
  • the wiper-blade arm and the connecting part are generally equipped with their respective contact surfaces and are connected together by resilient elements designed to keep the contact surfaces in contact with one another.
  • the connecting part generally presents a conical hole which is designed to receive the end of the motorized shaft of the control device of the windshield wiper.
  • the wiper-blade arm is arranged at a certain inclination with regard to the connecting part, or more precisely, with regard to a plane at a right angle to the axis of the conical hole for fastening the connecting part.
  • the relative inclination between the wiper-blade arm and the connective part is necessary to generate the force which, in the configuration in which the wiper unit is fitted onto an automotive vehicle, keeps the wiper blade pressed against the vehicle window.
  • the relative inclination between the arm and the connecting part is reduced by the effect of the reaction of the blade against the window.
  • the reduction of this relative inclination applies to the resilient elements inserted between the wiper-blade arm and the connecting part, a preloading of which corresponds to the desired contact pressure between the blade and the window.
  • the relative inclination between the connecting part and the wiper-blade arm creates, however, problems during the fitting of the wiper unit onto an automotive vehicle.
  • the connecting part is tightened on the control shaft while the axis of the conical hole of the connecting part is not exactly lined up with the axis of the control shaft, because of the resilient force that tends to maintain the connecting part in an inclined position with regard to the wiper-blade arm.
  • the nut that fastens the connecting part to the control shaft is tighte ⁇ ned with the conical hole of the connecting part arranged in a wrong position, the connection of the wiping unit is uncertain and tends to lose efficacy after the windshield wiper has been operating for a certain amount of time, especially under high-speed operating conditions.

  • the fact that the wiper-blade arm is substantially lined up with the connecting part reduces the contact pressure between the wiper blade and the glass with a resulting reduction in the risk of damaging the wiper lip during the period which transpires between the preparation of the vehicle and the delivery of the vehicle to the final purchaser.

It is also possible to arrange the auxiliary element 28 along the axis of the spring 14 toward an inoperative position in which the wedge portion 38 is not inserted between the contact surfaces 20 and 22. To reduce the contact pressure between the blade and the glass during long periods of inactivity of the vehicle, it is possible to restore the auxiliary element 28 to the operating position shown in Figure 6, raising the wiper-blade arm 2 and causing an axial movement of the element 28 as described above.
