Abstract

A dental diagnostic instrument for visualizing the inside of a tooth and adjacent tissues by irradiation with an optical light has a manually positionnable diagnostic head (2) with an imaging head (202) with image-generating infra-red receiving optical elements (208) and an image converter (210) which supplies the received image signals as electric signals to a display unit connected downstream of the instrument. The instrument further has an energy supply, evaluation and display unit (16) at least electrically connected thereto, as well as a transmitter (201) with transmitting optical elements (203) which emit infrared radiation in a wavelength range adapted to the receiving optical elements (208) and to the image converter (210). The infrared radiation has sufficient energy to pass through the tooth or gum area to be examined and reach the opposite receiving optical elements (208) which face the transmitting optical elements (203). The infrared radiation lies in a wavelength range from 500 to 1300 nm.
