Abstract

A non-aqueous cleaning composition for removing ink from printing press rollers, the composition including d-limonene, dipropylene glycol, n-butyl ether, and ethoxylated undecyl alcohol.

Description

TITLE ALL-IN-ONE OFFSET PRINTING SOLUTION COMPOSITION FIELD OF THE INVENTION The present invention relates to a cleaning composition that is especially adapted to clean ink from printing press rollers and blankets during a color change over or at the end of a printing job.
BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION It is desirable to have a cleaning composition or solution for effectively and safely cleaning ink from printing press rollers. Desirable properties are (1) high cleaning efficiency with smaller quantities of cleaning composition, (2) good-in-use evaporation rate, (3) biodegradable, (4) low toxicity and (5) little odor.
OBJECTS OF THE INVENTION It is an object of the invention to provide a non- aqueous cleaning composition adapted for cleaning ink from printing press rollers, the composition comprising the following ingredients: d-limonene, dipropylene glycol n- butyl ether, and ethoxylated undecyl alcohol (surfactant) . It is an object of the invention to provide an offset printing cleaning composition to remove ink from printing press rollers, the composition being liquid and comprising the following ingredients in approximate percent by weight: Inqredients % by weicrht d-limonene 50-95 dipropylene glycol 5 - 60 n-butyl ether
C.4, alcohol 0 . 5-5 . 0 ethoxylate (ethoxylated undecyl alcohol)
These and other objects of the invention will be apparent from the specification that follows the appended claims.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION
The present invention provides an offset printing cleaning composition to remove ink from printing press rollers, the composition being liquid and comprising the following ingredients in approximate percent by weight:
Inσredients % by weicrht d-limonene 50 -95 dipropylene glycol 5 - 60 n-butyl ether
CΉ alcohol 0 . 5 -5 . 0 ethoxylate (ethoxylated undecyl alcohol)
The present invention also provides an off-set printing cleaning composition in which the composition comprises the following ingredients in approximate percent by weight: Ingredients % by weight d-limonene 74-84 dipropylene glycol 15-20 n-butyl ether C alcohol ethoxylate 0.5-2
The present invention also provide an optimum composition in which the following ingredients are present in approximate percent by weigh :
Ingredients % by weight
d-limonene 77-81 dipropylene glycol 18-22 n-butyl ether ethoxylated undecyl alcohol 0.5-2
The present invention also provides a method of cleaning printing ink from printing press rollers, the method comprising the steps of a) applying the cleaning composition comprising d-limonene, dipropylene glycol n- butyl ether and ethoxylated undecyl alcohol to the surface of the rollers having ink thereon; and b) removing the composition and ink from the rollers.
EXAMPLE D-limonene (Glidsafe™ Limonene 145) ,* dipropylene glycol n-butyl ether, and ethoxylated undecyl alcohol (Shell Neodol 1-5™) were mixed to provide a non-aqueous liquid composition. The composition was as follows: A composition as defined in claim 2 which comprises:
Ingredients % by weight
d-limonene 79 dipropylene 20 glycol n-butyl ether ethoxylated undecyl 1 alcohol
The composition was easily made. When applied to printing press rolls with ink, the ink and composition were easily removed in an efficient cleaning process.
The composition effectively cleaned the rollers between color changes and at the end of the printing job. The composition was very efficient, had a good evaporation rate, was biodegradable, had low toxicity, and had little odor.
Good results have been obtained by the use of Glidsafe™ Limonene 145, which generally contains about 90 to 97% or so of d-limonene.
U.S. Patent No. 5,089,591 (Stevens) discloses a paint stripper composition with d-limonene, N-methyl pyrrolidone (NMP) , glycol ethers, a carbonate such as propylene carbonate, and a surfactant that includes ethoxylated undecyl alcohol. However, the composition always contains
NMP which is detrimental to the offset printing roller cleaners of the present invention.
