Abstract

A paving machine (10, 110, 210) has a hopper (11, 111, 211) from which paving material (27) is discharged in a strip of controlled width and depth alongside the shoulder of a paved road (23). The strip is rolled and trimmed to allow the increased width of road to be paved. An auger (18) in the hopper (11, 111, 211) urges the paving material to a discharge outlet (17) which is variable in width, and adjustable blade controlling the depth of the paving material as it is laid.

Description

TITLE; "ROAD SHOULDER PAVING MACHINE" BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
1. Field of the Invention
THIS INVENTION relates to a road shoulder paving machine.
2. Prior Art
In recent years, road engineers have realised that paving roads to a minimum width is false economy as the shoulder repair costs on narrow paved roads rapidly overtake the initial savings from only paving to the minimum width.
New roads are now paved to greater widths but there are still thousands of kilometres of existing narrow paved roads which must be maintained, or be widened (eg. by 750-lOOOmm on both sides) to reduce the. shoulder damage problems.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION
It is an object of the present invention to provide a paving machine where a strip of paving on road base material can be laid adjacent a road shoulder to enable the road to be widened.
It is a preferred object to provide a machine which can control the depth of the material laid adjacent the shoulder. It is a further preferred object to provide a machine where the material to be laid can be continuously supplied from a source to the machine as the machine is advanced.
It is a still further preferred object to provide such a machine which can be provided with a quick release coupling for attachment to an existing road building machine.
Other preferred objects will become apparent from the following description. In a broad aspect, the present invention resides in a road shoulder paving machine including: a hopper, optionally with an open top and downwardly convergent front and rear walls; means to mount the hopper on a prime mover; a discharge outlet at or adjacent one end of the hopper; means to transfer or convey paving material from a bulk supply in the hopper to the discharge outlet; and means to control the discharge outlet onto the road portion to be paved.
Preferably, the open top of the hopper is arranged to receive the paving material from a truck or trailer. Preferably, the paving material can be dumped into the hopper as the machine is advanced for continuous operation.
The hopper is preferably mounted on the prime mover, eg. a loader via a quick-hitch attachment.
Preferably, the discharge outlet is provided in the floor of the hopper at one end and may be provided with an adjustable cover to enable different widths of paving material to be laid.
Preferably, an auger extends along the floor of the hopper to transfer the paving material to the discharge outlet.
Preferably, the auger has flytes which are tapered (in diameter) and/or are of varying pitch so that the material is transferred equally across the hopper. Preferably, the auger is spaced above the floor so that a layer of the paving material protects the floor (and front and rear walls) against unwanted wear.
Preferably, an adjustable blade controls the depth of the paving material laid by the machine. Preferably, the hopper is mounted on rollers or wheels which run on the previously paved road to assist in controlling the depth.

FIG 1 is a perspective front view of a first embodiment;
FIG 2 is a plan view of the machine of FIG 1;
FIG 3 is a rear perspective view showing the machine in use;
FIGS 4 and 5 are respective front views of a second embodiment (parts being omitted for clarity) showing the adjustable discharge outlet;
FIG 6 is a side view of the second embodiment; and
FIG 7 is a perspective view of a third embodiment;
FIG 8 is a rear perspective view of the third embodiment. DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE PREFERRED EMBODIMENTS
Referring to FIGS 1 to 3, the paving machine 10 has a hopper 11 mounted on a loader 12, where the loader bucket 13 forms the rear wall of the hopper. The hopper 10 has vertical side walls 14, an inclined front wall 15 and floor 16. A discharge outlet 17 is formed at one end of the floor 16 to lay a strip of paving material, eg. 750-1000mm wide.
An auger 18 is journalled at each end in the side walls 14 and is driven via a suitable hydraulic motor/transmission assembly 19. As shown in FIG 2, the auger 18 has a tapered flyte 20 so that the paving material is drawn evenly across the hopper to the discharge outlet 17. (The maximum diameter of the auger 18 ensures that a layer of paving material covers the floor 16 and lower portions of the front and rear walls to reduce wear. ) Rollers 21 are journalled on support brackets
22, extending from the front wall 15, to- support the hopper 11 and space it above the existing paved road 23, while pusher rollers 24 engage the rear tyres 25 of the tip trucks 26 (see FIG 3) which supply the road base (or other paving material) 27 to the hopper 11.
The operation of the paving machine 10 will now be described.
A road grader (not shown) with a modified blade digs a shallow trench 28 along the edge of the existing paved road to the width, eg. 750mm, 1000mm, 1500mm by which that lane is to be widened.
The prime mover 12 places the hopper 11, with the rollers 21 on the paved road 23, so that the discharge outlet overlies the trench 28 and the auger 18 is set in operation. The tip truck 26 dumps some of the paving material 27 in the hopper 11 and the paving machine 10 is advanced.
The auger 18 conveys the paving material 27 to the discharge outlet 17 and the paving material 27 falls therethrough to overfill the trench 28. (The depth of the paving material is set by an adjustable blade (not shown) bolted to the rear wall 13 of the hopper 11.)
The pusher rollers 24 engage the rear tyre 25 of the tip truck 26 to advance the latter with the paving machine 10 until all of the paving material 27 has been dumped in the hopper 11. The tip truck 26 is replaced by another so that the paving material can be laid continuously.
When the paving material 27 has been laid alongside the existing paved road 23, it is rolled and then skimmed (by a grader) to the same height as the existing paved road 23 before asphalt or bitumen is laid over both the existing and newly-laid portions. (Normally, both sides of the road will be widened using the paving machine before the asphalt or bitumen is laid. )
Referring now to FIGS 4 to 6, the paving machine 110 is generally similar to the paving machine
10, the hopper 111 being mounted on the prime mover (not shown) via quick hitch arrangement 130.
The auger 118 is driven via a hydraulic motor 119 (and chain) and reduction gearbox 119a.
The width of the paving material laid by the machine 110 is controlled by an adjustable cover 131 which underlies the floor 16 and at least part of the discharge outlet 117. By movement of the cover, the effective length of the discharge outlet 117 is varied so that the paving material 127 may be laid, eg. 750mm, 1000mm or 1500mm wide. The depth of the paving material 127 is controlled by adjustable blades 132 selectively bolted to the rear wall 113 of the hopper 111.
To ensure that the correct depth of material is maintained, a rear roller 133 co-operates with the front rollers 121 to maintain the correct altitude of the hopper 111 to the existing paved road 123.
By the addition of heater bar(s) to the hopper
11, 111, the machine 10, 110 may be modified to enable them to lay asphalt or bitumen in addition to the laying of gravel or road base by the unmodified machines.
FIGS 7 and 8 show a third embodiment, where the paving machine 210 is mounted on a prime mover (not shown) via a quick hitch arrangement 230. The operator's seat 240 is mounted rearwardly of, and above, the hopper 211. A guide bar 241 extends forwardly of the hopper 211 and has a suspended chain 242 to assist in the alignment of the paving machine 210 with the road shoulder. A skid-bar 343 extends forwardly of the discharge end of the hopper 211.
Because of the load on the hydraulic motor/ transmission assembly 219, the hydraulic oil is pumped through two large diameter pipes 244 mounted on the rear of the hopper 211 to act as heat radiators for the hydraulic oil.
It will be readily apparent to the skilled addressee that the present invention provides paving machines which enable the efficient, inexpensive widening of existing paved roads. Various changes and modifications may be made to the embodiments described and illustrated without departing from the scope of the present invention defined in the appended claims.

Claims

CLAIMS:
1. A road shoulder paving machine including: a hopper, optionally with an open top and downwardly convergent front and rear walls; means to mount the hopper on a prime mover; a discharge outlet at or adjacent one end of the hopper; means to transfer or convey paving material from a bulk supply in the hopper to the discharge outlet; and means to control the discharge outlet onto the road portion to be paved.
2. A machine as claimed in Claim 1 wherein: the open top of the hopper is arranged to receive the paving material from a truck or trailer; and the paving material is dumped into the hopper as the machine is advanced for continuous operation.
3. A machine as claimed in Claim 1 or Claim 2 whrein: the hopper is mounted on the prime mover via a quick-hitch arrangement.
4. A machine as claimed in any one of Claims 1 to 3 wherein: the discharge outlet is provided in a floor of the hopper at one end and is provided with an adjustable cover to enable different widths of paving material to be laid.
5. A machine as claimed in Claim 4 wherein: an auger extends along the floor of the hopper to transfer the paving material to the discharge outlet.
6. A machine as claimed in Claim 5 wherein: the auger has flytes which are tapered in diameter and/or are of varying pitch so that the paving material is transferred equally across the hopper.
7. A machine as claimed in Claim 5 or Claim 6 wherein: the auger is spaced above the floor so that a layer of the paving material protects the floor and front and rear walls against unwanted wear.
8. A machine as claimed in any one of Claims 1 to
7 wherein: an adjustable blade controls the depth of the paving material laid by the machine.
9. A machine as claimed in any one of Claims 1 to
8 wherein: the hopper is mounted on rollers or wheels which run on the previously paved road to assist in controlling the depth.
