Abstract

A tubular spindle-drive sleeve (34) rotates about longitudinal axis (20) while axially immovable. Spindle (31) is axially slidable in and rotatably driven by the sleeve. A linear drive, non-rotating ball screw (51) connected to the upper end of the spindle (31) is driven axially by a powered ball nut (66) to advance and retract the spindle in the sleeve. Coupling plug (19) fixed at the bottom of spindle (31) connects to any one of various toolholders (23) in turret (21). Axial movement of spindle (31) by ball nut (66) automatically couples and decouples the spindle to and from the toolholder (23). Fluid supply (82) down through the spindle is provided. In figure 4, air motor (93) mounted inside spindle (91) is coupled to a second spindle (116) in the changeable toolholder (97) to drive a cutting tool (122) at a much higher rotational rate than is possible with the main spindle alone.

Claims

AMENDED CLAIMS
[received by the International Bureau on 18 January 1994 (18.01.94);
original claims 1, 22, 25 and 26 amended; original claims 23 and 24 cancelled;
remaining claims unchanged (3 pages)]
1. In a machine having a frame and a spindle for driving a tool in rotation, the improvement comprising:
an elongate drive sleeve having a longitudinal axis and rotatably mounted in the frame to rotate about its axis;
a spindle received in the sleeve and coupled to the sleeve to rotate with the sleeve when the sleeve is rotated and the spindle being axially movable in the sleeve relative to the sleeve;
a first spindle drive motor coupled to the sleeve to drive the sleeve and, thereby, the spindle, in rotation;
a screw axially aligned with and coupled to one end of the spindle to drive the spindle axially, the screw having rotation limiting means thereon to allow differential rotation of the spindle and screw;
a nut rotatably mounted Lo the frame to rotate about its axis and engaged with the screw to axially advance and retract the screw and thereby, the spindle, in response to rotation of the nut in one and the opposite rotational direction about its axis; and
a second motor coupled to the nut to rotate the nut for axial drive of the spindle.
2. The improvement of claim 1 and wherein:
the sleeve is axially confined in the frame to prevent axial movement of the sleeve in the frame.
3. The improvement of claim 2 and further comprising: first and second axially spaced bearings mounted in the frame and both radially and axially locating the sleeve in the frame and preventing axial movement of the sleeve in the frame.
4. The improvement of claim 2 and wherein: a plurality of tool holding toolholders is held in the magazine;
at least one of the toolholders in the magazine has a toolholder spindle rotatably mounted therein;
a clutch is provided on the output member and toolholder spindle and engaged when the first-mentioned spindle pushes the toolholder out of the magazine; and
a workpiece treating tool is secured in the toolholder spindle. 21. The improvement of claim 20 and wherein:
the machine spindle is vertical; and
the machine has a workpiece holder mounted to the frame under the spindle and movable in translation in a horizontal plane to move a workpiece into various positions under the spindle for treatment by various ones of the tools,
one-at-a-time.
22. A method of moving a workpiece treating tool and comprising the steps of:
holding the tool on a spindle;
sliding the spindle longitudinally one direction in a sleeve rotatable on an axis, while limiting axial movement of the sleeve and precluding relative rotation between the spindle and the sleeve;
pulling the tool off the spindle and storing the tool as the spindle is sliding longitudinally in the sleeve;
sliding the spindle longitudinally in the opposite direction in the sleeve and thereupon coupling another tool onto the spindle;
driving the spindle rotationally about the axis and thereby driving the tool rotationally about the axis while operating on a workpiece; and
driving the tool at a rotational speed higher than the speed of the spindle by means of a motor inside the spindle.
25. A method of moving a workpiece treating tool and comprising the steps of:
holding the tool on a spindle;
sliding the spindle longitudinally one direction in a sleeve rotatable on an axis, while limiting axial movement of the sleeve and precluding relative rotation between the spindle and the sleeve;
pulling the tool off the spindle and storing the tool as the spindle is sliding longitudinally in the sleeve; and
rotationally driving an axially confined ball nut on a ball screw attached to the spindle to drive the spindle longitudinally in the sleeve.
26. The method of claim 25 and further comprising the step of:
preventing rotation of the ball screw during rotation of the ball nut thereon.
