Definitions

  • This invention relates to a visual aid for teaching someone to tell the time.
  • a visual aid for teaching someone to tell the time comprising:
  • a twelve hour clock face display having an array of angularly spaced characters disposed generally circumferentially about the clock face and which indicate hours,
  • a pair of hands being a minute hand and an hour hand, co-operable with the array of characters to indicate a certain time with the hands being manually movable to selected positions on the clock face display,
  • the twelve angularly spaced characters are numbered 1 through to 12 in sequence and at least some of those characters have contiguously disposed labels indicative either of the number of minutes which would be indicated as elapsing as the minute
  • ⁇ - hand traversed the gap between that character and the character indicative of twelve hours in the clockwise direction or of the number of minutes which would be indicated as elapsing as the minute hand traversed the gap between the character indicator of twelve hours and that character in the clockwise direction, whichever is the smaller number of minutes.
  • the character indicative of twelve hours may be labelled "O'clock” or an equivalent term in a language other than English, the character indicative of six hours may be labelled "_”, and a character of each group midway between the characters indicative of six and twelve hours may be labelled
  • the group of characters to the left of a notional line through the characters indicative of six and twelve hours respectively when the clock is viewed are collectively identified as "TO” or by an equivalent term in a language other than English and the group of characters to the right of the notional line as collectively identified as "PAST" or by an equivalent term in a language other than English,
  • the visual aid includes a clock mechanism for driving the hands of the clock.
  • the visual aid may include a transparent cover which is releasably attached over the clock face so that it may be easily removed for use in teaching a child to tell the time and then reattached over the clock face.
  • FIG. 1 A preferred form of clock for carrying out this invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing labelled Figure 1. It conveniently incorporates a clock mechanism for driving the hour and minute hands.
  • the characters of the 12 hour clock face viz. 1 to 12 are depicted in one colour, e.g. grey.
  • the "quarter past”, “half past” and “quarter to" locations on the clock face are additionally labelled . , i i respectively, the labels _, _ and h being depicted in a second colour, e.g. blue.
  • the "five past”, "10 past”, “20 past”, “25 past”, “25 to”, “20 to”, “10 to” and “5 to” locations on the clock face are additionally labelled 5, 10, 20, 25, 25, 20, 10 and 5, respectively, those labels are depicted in a third colour, e.g. red.
  • the 12 O'clock location is additionally labelled "O 1 Clock” which label is depicted in a fourth colour, e.g. yellow.
  • the group of characters to the right of the line through the locations of the characters 6 and 12 of the 12 hour clockface, as seen in the drawing, are collectively labelled "PAST" and that label is depicted in a fifth colour, e.g. orange; and the group of characters on the other side of that line are collectively labelled "TO" and that label is depicted in a sixth colour, e.g. green.
  • the clock is used in the following manner:-
  • the advantage of the clock hereinbefore described is that substantially all the terminology needed to tell the time or to produce a verbal expression of the time is visually displayed on the clock face disposed in an appropriate area of the clock face. This produces whole brain learning rather than just left brain sequential learning. Learning is facilitated by directing the child's eye movements correctly with the teacher's fingers along the relevant hand of the clock. The absence of a cover allows the child to operate the hands him/herself. This touching also speeds up the learning process.
