Abstract

A device for wheel-chairs with a frame (1), driving wheels (2) and a seat which can be raised and lowered. According to the invention the device comprises at least one pair of parallel arms whereby the seat (5) can undergo parallel displacement in the height direction in relation to the frame (1) by means of a device (20, 21, 22) for turning of the arms (10, 11) in relation to the frame (1).

Description

A device for wheel-chairs
The invention relates to a device for wheel-chairs with a frame, driving wheels and a seat which can be raised and lowered.
There are previously known wheel-chairs where the seat can be raised and lowered in relation to the frame by means of a jack with a telescopically extendable arm, inflatable bellows, crossed or articulated arms, or a device similar to that used in fork-lift trucks, and comprises a principally vertical track along which the seat can be moved. The disadvantage with all of these, however, is that they do not allow the seat to be lowered to as low a position as required and/or that they do not permit sufficient adjustment of the seat, in addition to the fact that they are expensive.
The object of the invention is to provide a device of the type described in the introduction which is not or is only slightly encumbered by the above-mentioned disadvantages.
The characteristic features of the device are evident from the claims presented.
In the following section the invention will be described in more detail with reference to the drawing, whose only figure is a schematic side view of an embodiment of a wheel-chair, where sections of this have been removed.
As can be seen in the figure, the wheel-chair comprises a frame 1 with, e.g., four driving wheels 2. The frame comprises two side beams 3 which are U-shaped in cross section and extend in the wheel-chair's longitudinal direction, and which are arranged in such a way that the cross section openings face upwards. These side beams can be interconnected by means of transverse beams. Each side beam has an upward projecting profile 4 at its rear section. On each side of the wheel-chair there extends from the profile 4 to a seat 5 a pair of parallel arms 10, 11, the end sections of which are rotatably connected to the profile 4 and a downward projecting section 6 of the seat.
The axes of rotation 12, 13, 14, 15 are running parallel to one another and in a plane which is parallel to the seat's sitting plane, and the distance between each individual arm's axis of rotation is the same for all the arms 10, 11. Thus when the arms are rotated around the turning point at the connection with the profile 4, the seat's sitting plane, i.e. the upper plane of the seat which is normally principally horizontal when the wheel-chair is standing on a horizontal base, will undergo parallel displacement in the vertical direction when the wheel-chair is standing in this way.
A rod 20 has one of its end sections rotatably connected to a central section of one arm 11 and its other end section rotatably connected to a roller 21 which is arranged to roll on the web of one of the side beams 3. In the side beam there is also provided an actuator 22, e.g. preferably an electrical screw jack with a housing 24 and an actuator rod 23 which can be moved in its longitudinal direction in and out of the housing 24, the roller 21 being rotatably connected with the end section of the actuator rod 23 facing away from the housing and the housing 24 is connected with the frame 1 close to the profile 4, e.g. by means of a transverse screw 25.
By operating the actuator 22 so that the actuator rod 23 is shifted to the left of the figure, the roller 21 and the lower end section of the rod 20 will also be shifted to the left along the side beam 3. The rod 20 will thereby push the arm 11 in an anticlockwise direction and cause the seat to be raised.
By operating the actuator so that the actuator rod 23 is shifted to the right of the drawing, the seat 5 will be lowered. Even if the side beam's cross section is open at the top, the weight of the seat 5 and person sitting on it will thereby be sufficient to cause the roller 21 to be forced to abut against the side beam 3. In order to prevent the roller 21 from being raised from the side beam 3 under any circumstances, this can have an additional upper, longitudinal flange against which the roller 21 can abut when the seat is lowered in this way.
In a second embodiment the actuator can be a hydraulic cylinder. Unless the chair has other devices which have to be operated, this will probably be a more expensive arrangement, since in addition a pressure fluid source, control valves, etc. have to be provided.
Instead of having a linear actuator, a turning motor can be provided which exercises a torque between the frame and an arm at the turning point for the connection between the frame and the seat and this arm, thus avoiding the need for the rod 20 and the wheel 21.
Instead of having the rod 20 connected to the lower arm 11, it can, of course, be connected to the upper rod 10, and the actuator 24 can be connected to the seat 5 instead of to the frame 1. Even though it is advantageous for the profile 4 and the connecting line between the axes of rotation 12 and 13 to extend perpendicular to the seat's sitting plane, the profile and the connecting line can extend at another angle to this plane. If the connecting line is parallel to the seat's sitting plane, both the profile 4 and the downward projecting section of the seat can be dispensed with, since the lower end sections of the arms 10 and 11 of the arm pairs according to the drawing can be rotatably connected to, e.g., the vertical flange of the side beams 3.
Instead of having the side beams arranged in such a way that the openings of the U-shaped cross section face upwards, they can be arranged so that the cross section openings face one another, the rollers 21 in this case being arranged so as to abut against the profile's flanges. In this case the screw 25 whereby the actuator is attached extends through the web of the side beam.
