Abstract
A connector for connection with a tubular part has an arm which is insertable in the bore of the tubular part and its transverse direction consists, at least partly, of a softer material than the tubular part, the arm having at least two opposite lateral surfaces for engaging the corresponding boundary surfaces of the bore of the tubular part as the arm is inserted in the bore. For each engaging lateral surface, the free end of the arm has a tongue (9, 9') which is made of a material of at least the same hardness as the tubular part and is arranged substantially on a level with the lateral surface. The tongue is mounted in a cantilevered manner at the free end of the arm and is formed with a shoulder (10, 10') which is inwardly spaced from the free end of the arm and projects beyond the level of the lateral surface, said shoulder extending substantially over the entire width of the lateral surface. A deburring element for the connector comprises a common holder (7, 8) for the tongues (9, 9') of the arm.
Description
DEBURRING ELEMENT AND A CONNECTOR CONTAINING
THE SAME
The present invention relates to a deburring element for a connector which is adapted to be connected with a tubular part and has an arm which is insertable in the bore of the tubular part and, in its transverse direction, consists at least partly of a softer material than the tubular part, said arm having at least two opposite late- ral surfaces for engaging the corresponding boundary sur¬ faces of said bore of the tubular part as the arm is inserted in the bore. The invention also relates to such a connector as contains one or more such deburring elements. The commonest field of application for connectors of the type mentioned by way of introduction is the construc¬ tion of various interior fittings, display stands, tables etc, but the connector can be used whenever a tubular structural part is to be connected with another such part or some other device. When inserting such a connector in a tubular part, problems may arise owing to remaining burrs at the end of the tubular part, in which the arm of the connector should be inserted. Consequently, these burrs must be removed before the insertion and therefore involve an additional operation.
The object of the present invention is to eliminate said additional operation.
According to the invention, this is achieved by means of a deburring element of the type mentioned by way of introduction, which is characterised by a holder which, for each engaging lateral surface of the arm, has a canti¬ levered tongue made of a material of at least the same hardness as the tubular part and is mountable on the free end of the arm, the tongues being inwardly directed from said free end of the arm and each arranged substantially on a level with one of the engaging lateral surfaces of the arm, said tongue being formed with a shoulder which is
inwardly spaced from the free end of the arm and, when the holder is mounted on the arm, projects beyond the level of the corresponding lateral surface and extends substantial¬ ly over the entire width of the lateral surface. According to the invention, the object is also achieved in a connector of the type mentioned by way of introduction, which is characterised in that, for each engaging lateral surface, the free end of said arm has a tongue which is made of a material of at least the same hardness as the tubular part and is arranged substantially on a level with said lateral surface, the tongue being mounted in a cantilevered manner at said free end of the arm and being formed with a shoulder which is inwardly spaced from said free end of the arm and projects beyond the level of the lateral surface, said shoulder extending substantially over the entire width of the lateral sur¬ face.
When the arm of the connector is inserted in the bore of the tubular part, the outer part of the deburring ele- ment, owing to a certain clearance, will slide freely into the bore until the shoulders engage the end of the tubular part. The continued insertion of the arm requires a rela¬ tively large amount of force, whereby the tongues will be pressed inwards and the shoulders of the tongues will up- set the end of the tubular part and remove any burrs at the edges of said boundary surfaces at the end of the tubular part. As the arm is inserted further in the bore of the tubular part, the lateral surfaces of the arm will engage the corresponding boundary surfaces of the bore of the tubular part, and the arm will be frictionally locked onto the tubular part.
By means of the invention it will thus be possible to mount the connector in a tubular part without necessitat¬ ing prior removal of burrs, if any, at the terminal edges of the bore.
According to the invention, the holder carrying the tongues is suitably annular and can be a sleeve which is adapted to be slipped over the free end of the arm and has an end wall which forms a stop to the slip-on movement of the deburring element on the arm. For receiving the hol¬ der, the arm is of reduced cross-section adjacent its free end. To make it easier for the tongues to be resiliently pressed in, the side of the shoulder facing the free end of the arm can form an obtuse angle with the plane of the tongue.
The invention will now be described in more detail with reference to the accompanying drawings. Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a connector and a corresponding tubu¬ lar part according to prior art technique. Fig. 2 is a side view of a connector according to the invention, before mounting the deburring element according to the invention. Figs 3, 4 and 5 are a top plan view, a bottom plan view and a side view, respectively, of an embodiment of the deburring element according to the invention. The connector illustrated in Fig. 1 is of prior art type and is described in e.g. US-A-3,731,958. The con¬ nector comprises a central element 1 (in this case in the form of a cube) and two arms 2, 2' disposed at right angles to one another and each adapted to cooperate with a substantially tubular structural part. An optional number of arms 2, 2' (however, not more than six with the illu¬ strated cube shape) can be provided on the central element 1 of the connector. These arms are substantially octagonal in cross-section and have two pairs of opposite lateral surfaces 4 and 4' for engaging the corresponding boundary surfaces 5 and 5' of a tubular part 6.
When inserting the connector arm 2' in the tubular part 6, a frictional engagement will be established between the lateral surfaces 4, 4' and the boundary sur- faces 5, 5'. The arms 2, 2' are in their transverse direc¬ tion at least partly made of a softer material than the tubular part 6, and complete frictional locking between
said surfaces can be achieved by providing the boundary surfaces 5, 5' with longitudinal grooves, as shown in Fig. 1.
In the embodiment of a connector and a deburring element according to the invention, as illustrated in Figs 2-5, the arms 2, 2' are of reduced cross-section adjacent their free end, as shown in Fig. 2. The deburr¬ ing element according to the invention as illustrated in Figs 3-5 is a sleeve 7 whose inner cross-sectional shape conforms to the reduced cross-section of the free end of the arms 2, 2'. One end of the sleeve 7 is closed by means of an end wall 8. Two pairs of opposite tongues 9, 9' are connected in a cantilevered manner with the sleeve 7 adja¬ cent the end wall 8 and extend substantially in parallel with the sleeve 7 away from the end wall 8. The outer cross-section of the deburring element, including said tongues 9, 9', conforms to the cross-section of the inner part of the arms 2, 21 or is slightly reduced as compared thereto. The free ends of the tongues 9, 9' facing away from the end wall 8 are formed with projecting shoulders 10, 10' which extend beyond the level of the tongues and thus the level of the lateral surfaces 4, 4' after mount¬ ing on the arm 2, 2' . Between the tongues 9, 9' and the sleeve 7 there is a gap which, at least opposite the shoulders 10, 10', has a width corresponding to the heigh of the shoulders.
The connector and the deburring element according to the invention function as follows. After mounting the deburring element on the free end of e.g. the arm 2, the arm can be inserted in a tubular element such as the part 6 in Fig. 1. The end of the deburring element will run relatively freely until the shoulders 10, 10' engage the terminal side of the part 6. The continued insertion of the arm 2 into the part 6 requires a considerable amount of force and, owing to the spring deflection of the tongues 9, 9' into the adjoining gaps, the shoulders 10, 10' will upset the end of the part 6 and cut off and
remove any burrs at the terminal edges of the boundary surfaces 5, 5' . Subsequently the arm 2 can be inserted further into the tubular part 6, whereby the lateral sur¬ faces 4, 4' will frictionally engage the boundary surfaces 5, 5'.
According to the invention, upsetting and automatic deburring thus is obtained as a connector is mounted in a tubular part. To perform such upsetting and deburring, the deburring element must of course be made of a material of at least the same hardness as the tubular part. Further¬ more, the deburring element will have a guiding function and prevent an incorrect turning position of the arm 2 relative to the tubular part 6. In a connector as shown in Fig. 1, an incorrect turning position can otherewise be caused by the fact that the arm 2 is, at least partly, made of a softer material than the part 6.
It will be appreciated that a number of modifications of the connector described above as well as the deburring element described above are feasible within the scope of the invention. Thus, the tongues 9, 9' can be connected with the arm 2, 2* in a manner other than by means of the holder formed of the sleeve 7. For example, the sleeve need not be complete in circumferential direction but can be replaced by tongues which are disposed between the tongues 9, 9' and by means of which the mounting can be performed on the free end of the arm 2. Nor is the end wall 8 necessary, however suitable for preventing the tongues 9, 9' from moving inwardly along the arm 2. Final¬ ly, it is also possible that the tongues 9, 9' are con- nected, not with the holder 7, 8, but with the metal core which is usually to be found in a connector of the type shown.
