Definitions

  • This invention relates to scaffolding and in particular to joints in scaffolding made of aluminium alloy tube where vertical members (uprights) and horizontal members (transoms) intersect. Whilst the invention has been devised with the above use particularly in mind the joint of the invention has wider applications and is not limited to scaffolding applications and has application to joints between tubing which is other than aluminium and circular.
  • joints using joining members have proved successful in overcoming the fracture problem, associated with welded joints, they are expensive to form. Such joints necessarily include a joining member having spigot parts (itself providing a capital cost for each joint) and there is the cold forming (swaging) required to form the joints.
  • the present invention overcomes both of the foregoing problems by providing a strong joint at less expense than that for a joining member type joint.
  • tubing in the spigot and swaging type joint the tubing is of light gauge (0.058 inches wall thickness) and such thin walled tubing is easily damaged when the scaffolding is in commercial use.
  • the presently proposed scaffolding is intended to use an alloy tube of greater wall thickness (0.105 inches) thus creating a more durable construction.
  • the use of heavy walled tubing in welded type scaffolding has established the greater durability to be obtained from heavier walled tube under the severe working conditions frequently encountered in industry.
  • joints as proposed by the present invention are directly between the tubes forming the scaffolding and as a consequence corrosion between close contacting dissimilar metals is avoided. This can occur where there is a difference in the quality or type of material used in the joints of known joining-member scaffolding.
  • the tubing as proposed to be used in the present invention and as is widely used in commercial scaffolding presently, is made of aluminium which is prone to joint corrosion when the members are not of substantially identical material specification.
  • the present invention can be said to comprise a right angle joint between two elongated members where said joint comprises an axially extending tongue at one end of one of said members with the tongue comprised of two face to face blade members, shoulder means on the tongue and a length between said shoulder means and a free end of said tongue which is greater than the thickness of the other of said members, slot means extending laterally through the thickness of the other of said members, said slot means having a width dimension between edges thereof in the axial direction of said other member which is substantially the same as the width dimension of said tongue between edges thereof and a breadth dimension such that said tongue is received in said slot means with minimal clearance, and blade tails comprised of those portions of the blades which extend from the slot means in said other member turned over in opposite directions at an angle to the plane of the tongue to abut said other member to pull the abutment means tightly against said other member.

  • the upright 1 is made of aluminium tube, having a wall thickness of, in the order of, 2.5 mms and the diameter is in the order of 38 mms.
  • Such tube is.used in scaffolding aimed at the domestic/home handyman market.
  • the joint to be described is suitable not only for- scaffolding for the above market but is equally suitable for the commercial market where heavy walled tube of the same or greater diameter is used and also for special purpose markets where lighter wall tube of the same of different diameter is used.
  • the upright 1 is provided with diametrically disposed slots 2 and 3.
  • the slot 2 is parallel sided.
  • the slot 3 has a parallel sided upper portion 4 and a parallel sided lower portion 5 and an enlarged curve sided central portion 6.
  • the transom 7 is manufactured from the same specification aluminium tube and is flattened and notched (the portion removed by notching is shown in broken outline in Fig.l) to form a tongue 8 with sides that converge towards the free end of the blade.
  • the rib 11 is tapered in height with the height increasing as it extends away from the free end of the tongue.
  • the rib has zero height at about 1/3 of the distance from the shoulders 9 and 10 towards the free end of the tongue.
  • the edge notching of the flattened tongue-forming end portion of the transom exposes the edges of two back to back abutting blades formed by the flattening process, the two blades constitute the tongue 8.
  • the tongue 8 and the slot 2 are dimensioned so that the tongue 8 at its free end will pass with small working clearance through the slot 2.
  • the relative sizing is a function of the joint as will be explained hereinafter.
  • the tongue 8 is a neat sliding fit in the slot portions 4 and 5 and the profiles of the ribs 11 are such as to occupy the notch central portion 6 of the slot 3. Again the fit between these members is a function of the joint.
  • Fig. 2 it will be seen that when assembled the shoulders 9 and 10 abut the exterior of the upright 1 above and below the ends of the slot portions 4 and 5 thus providing a pair of spaced apart bearing surfaces to resist up and down forces which may be applied to the joint when in service. It will also be noted that as the length of the tongue 8 from the shoulders to the tongue free end exceeds the diameter of the upright, when the transom tongue is inserted through the slots in the upright the free end of the blades will project beyond the slot 2. This provides tails 12 and 13 to be curled back so as to lie firmly against the peripheral surface of the upright 1 adjacent the slot 2.
  • the widths of the tongue 8 at the shoulder location and at a location spaced therefrom the same as the upright diameter are slightly greater than the spacing between the ends of the slot portions 4 and 5, and the length of the slot 2.
  • the joint is simple and inexpensive to create.
  • the upright slots are formed in a simple punching operation and the tongue and shoulders are likewise formed in a simple flattening and notching operation.
  • the actual formation of the joint by the turning over of the blade ends 12 and 13 can be readily achieved using known techniques.
  • first and second members not tubular and not of circular cross-section.
  • connection between the members by the tongue and slot described without a supplementing wedge connection which reinforces the zone where the blade merges into its associated member, thereby to provide additional strength to resist lateral forces on that member.
  • the tongue Whilst the presently preferred arrangement provides for the tongue to be tapered in its length direction a joint with adequate performance could be formed using a tongue which has parallel edges.
