Abstract

A mechanical device for impregnating reinforcing fibres with a liquid binder using fibres in the form of matt or cloth fed to a perforated rotating drum under suction and dipped into the binder, or alternatively, by dispersing the fibres in the binder and so depositing the fibres on the drum by filtration to form a matt. In either case, the impregnated fibres on the drum are to be covered with a film to prevent entry of air and to remove excess resin by the effect of the suction in the drum.

Description

Title : - 1 -
MACHINE FOR IMPREGNATING FIBROUS REINFORCING WITH BINDER
This invention relates to the mechanical impregnation of reinforcing matt or woven cloth with liquid setting resins or other liquid binders.
Reinforcing fibres, in the form of matt and cloth are used to cover molds where they are impregnated with a liquid setting resin by hand. A mechanised alternative exists in the form of a gun which chops up the fibres and sprays them on the mold together with a liquid resin. Howver, the product so obtained contains air bubles and its quality is below that obtainable by the manual method. Also, this mechanised method is not applicable for use with reinforcing cloth.
The manual method of impregnation is also lacking in many respects. The product still contains some entrapped air, the quality of the product fluctuates according to the skill and application of the workmen and of course, the cost of hand labour is high.
This invention provides an alternative mechanised method of impregnation. For this it uses an adaptation of a machine known as the drum type of continous filter, altered as described below.
The process consists of two distinct phases, though performed without interruption. In the first stage, the dry reinforcing matt or cloth is icked up by the perforated drum under suction. As the drum turns, i carries the reinforing with it. The drum dips int a tray containing the liquid binder where the suctio will replace air from in between the fibres with th liquid binder from the tray. At this stage, the machin accomplished the effective removal of air and the complet wetting out of the fibrous layer with the liquid binder.
The purpose of the second stage is to remove exces binder and deliver a product of uniform binder to reinfor cing ratio. This is accomplished by introducing a fil into the tray and allow the drum with the now saturate reinforcing layer to pick up this film, upon the fil joining the layer already on the drum, the suctio in the drum will make the film press down so as t squeeze out te excess binder into the drum. The squeezin out process cannot go to excess because the reinforcin has little if any elasticity at the pressure impose by the film. Therefore, the squeezing out process termi nates at a point which leaves a product of unifor degree of impegnation, depending only on the natur of the reinforcing used.
As the drum turns, the final stage consists of the take-off point. A blade or rod across the drum breaks the suction between the product and the drum and allows it to be removed. The blade or rod has either attached thereto, or placed adjacent to it a flexible sheet which extends from the take-off point to the resin
SUBSTITUTE SHEET tray and serves as a shield to prevent entry of air into the perforted drum.
With some fibres it is dificult to achieve a clean parting from the drum. In such cases a losely woven belt is placed around the drum and the blade or rod at the take-off point is placed between the drum and the belt. Once the suction is broken, the product parts from the belt with ease.
The film used in the second step may be an endless belt and thus part of the machine or a film intended for a single use only and left on the wet product to aid in the removal of same.
The ancilliary machines required consist of a source of suction and a means for recycling the liquid binder from the inside of the perforated drum to the tray.
The process may be used also to build its own matt. When used thus, .chopped fibres are mixed with the liquid binder fed to the tray. Such fibres filter out on the perforated drum thus forming a layer of matt and may result in some savings in costs.

Claims

CLAIMS - 4 -
1^. A machine consisting of a perforated drum under suction towhich isprovided a continous layer of reinforcin fibres in the form of matt or woven material. The rotating drum carries the fibrous layer and in the course of its rotation performs the following functions. The drum with the fibrous t material on it dips into a tray containing a liquid binder where the suction in the drum acting through the perforat ions acts to remove air from in between the fibres and replaces same with liquid binder. Whilst still submerged in the liquid binder, at a stage when the fibres are fully saturated a film joins the wet layer. Atmospheric pressure on the one side and the suction in the drum on the other side squeezes excess resin into the drum until th fibres prevent further removal of the binder. Finally, as the rotation of the drum completes the cycle, blade or rod brakesthe suction between the produc and the drum and the impregnated product is removed. The section of the drum which lies between the produc off-take and the beginning of the new cycle where th dry reinforcing meets the liquid binder is covere with a sheet of flexible material to shield the perfora tions in the drum and so maintain suction in the drum.
2_. A machine as described in Claim No.l, but adde thereto a continous belt made from losely woven textil or wire and having a diameter slightly larger tha that of the perforated drum and placed thereon to carr the fibrous layer and to permit the placing of th blade or rod used for breaking the suction at the end of the cycle between such belt and the drum, so that the product can be lifted off the drum bymeans of such belt and so avoiding disturbance to the integrity of the product.
3. A machine as described in claim No.l, but supplied with chopped fibres mixed with the liquid binder in the tray in lieu of 'using a matt or woven cloth. The perforated drum under suction acts as a filter and results in the fibres building up on the drum forming a matt and is then covered with the film described in Claim No.l, the process proceeding thereafter in the same manner.
