Abstract

The frame amplitude of the 16:9 frame size provided for high-definition television (HDTV) must be reduced for display on a 4:3 picture tube. This means that the upper and lower edges of the frame appear black and the contents of the frame previously suppressed by overwriting become visible. Future 4:3 TV sets will automatically switch to the reduced frame amplitude by means of identification data. Future video recorders will supply these data to the TV set during playback of a recording of a 16:9 format. As the frame contents are not overwritten, the switching of the video heads can be seen on the lower edge of the frame. The invention overcomes this drawback, because the emitted signal is scanned black in the signal path of the video recorder during change-over of the heads.
