Definitions
- the invention relates to the provision of convenient and efficient means of instal- lation of aerials in cars, vans, trucks, etc., that are necessary in connection with vehicle-mounted radio equipment, especially mobile radio communication ter ⁇ minals operating in the UHF frequency band, such as mobile telephone and/or date communication sets.
- aerial installation is combined with vehicle mirrors, such that the aerial's feeder cable is brought to the inside of the vehicle via the mirror base in order to enclose and cover the cable hole in full or in part.
- the aerial itself may be incorporated into the mirror in one of several ways, for example
- tion systems operate in the UHF frequency range at around 900 MHz, corre ⁇ sponding to wavelenghts of about 30 cm.
- a commonly used type of antenna for subscriber terminals is a half-wave dipole measureing approximately 15 cm- in length.
- Fig. 1A shows a roof-top mounted aerial. This is regarded as the optimum antenna position from a system point of view. Due to its elevated position it is not shielded from the car's body and therefore exhibits high and full-circle antenna gain.
- the disadvantage of this arrangement lies in its installation, however. It requires a hole in the roof, cable routing and covering is expensive and labour intensive, wa ⁇ ter-proofing and maintenance is difficult It can hardly be dismantled and may re ⁇ cute the resale value of the car. Therefore, it is not very popular.
- Figs. IB and B' show the aerial mounted on either right-hand of left-hand wing.
- Figs. 1C and C Indicate comparable locations on the rear wings.
- Fig. ID indicates a special type of aerial that is glued onto the rear windscreen. No hole is required because it is capacitively coupled to an electode inside the screen. Windscreens with special layout of the electric heating circuit for this type of antenna mounting are available, but this together with complex cabling make installation expensive.
- the proposed invention relating to installation of aerials in vehicles for said pur ⁇ poses supports the objectives to simplify installation, to improve security, to re- prise the risk of accidental or malicious damage, and to virtually eliminate the risk of corrosion as well as any need for maintenance of the aerial without compromis ⁇ ing on antenna efficiency.
- the invention consists of an arrangement and device for combined mirror and aerial installation for use with vehicle-mounted radio equipment, especially mo ⁇ bile radio communication terminals operating in the UHF frequency band.
- the basic arrangement consists of the aerial being attached to or otherwise forming part of the car mirror, whereby the antenna feeder cable is brought to the inside of the car via the mirror base in order to enclose and cover the cable hole in full or in part.
- the antenna feeder cable is brought to the inside of the car via the mirror base in order to enclose and cover the cable hole in full or in part.
- no additional hole has to be drilled for this purpose, because it is already provided for other purposes.
- the hole is well sealed by the mirror base and washer.
- the cable can then follow the standard route of other wiring like stereo speakers.
- antenna efficiency should be high, further improvement can be achieved by diversity reception using two such devices, left and right.
