  • U.S. Patent No. 4,580,556- to Kondur discloses a plugged connector cap wherein both the plug and the cap are 'independently tied to the connector by cords. While the cap cord of Kondur permits removal of the cap from its connector opening without disconnecting the cap from the connector, the cord can not be easily removed from the connector if it is desired to completely disconnect the cap from the connector, such as to replace the cap.

  • the anchor strap 26 is retained on the neck 56 after it is snapped over the knob 48.

  • the width of the anchor strap 26 is greater than the width of the tether strap 24, thereby making the anchor strap less flexible and less subject to twisting than the tether strap. This facilitates rotation of anchor strap 26 about neck 56.

  • the access opening 20 is about 3 to 4 mm (.14 to .15 in) in diameter and the resilience of the cap 12 allows the opening 20 to stretch to accomodate instruments up to about 8 mm in diameter.
  • the cover portion 14 squeezes about the inserted instrument, sealing the access port 50 against loss of tidal volume.
  • the present invention th ⁇ s maintains positive system pressure while a suitably sized bronchoscope or catheter is present within access opening 20 of cap 12. After the instrument is removed, the plug 22 may be quickly inserted into access opening 20 of cap 12 to reseal the opening.
  • the cap 12 may be released from its position sealing the mouth 58 of access port 50. Because the cap 12 is flexible, it is readily released by unsnapping the skirt 16 from its position over the lip 44 of the access port 50. Once the cap 12 is disengaged from lip 44, a large diameter suctioning catheter or other instrument may be inserted directly through mouth 58 and inlet 42 of access port 50. Because the capping device 10 remains attached to the connector 40 by the anchor strap 26, the capping device 10 is retained just out of the way of the procedure being performed so that it may be quickly replaced over the mouth 58 at the end of the procedure by snapping the skirt 16 over the lip 44 of the access port 50. Also, the capping device 10 can be completely snap-disengaged from the connector 40, if desired, such as for cap replacement. This can be carried out without disassembly of the ventilation tubing, as is required with some prior art devices.
  • a present invention provides a convenient-to-use capping device for covering a conduit connector mouth of a ventilating device.
  • the capping device of the invention permits selective access through a selectively plugged access port for complementarily sized instruments.
  • the cap can be snapped-disengaged from the mouth of the conduit connector and rotated completely out of the way of the conduit mouth, while remaining anchored to the conduit connector by a separately snap-engageable anchor strap.

Abstract

Un dispositif d'obturation (10) destiné à fermer la bouche d'un raccord d'orifice (40) comprend un couvercle (12) présentant une jupe (16) s'étendant vers le bas, ainsi qu'un orifice d'accès (20) à travers lequel on peut insérer un bronchoscope, un cathéter ou un autre dispositif médical de diamètre réduit. La jupe (16) comprend un rebord (18) s'étendant vers l'intérieur, autour de sa surface intérieure, lequel s'encliquète de manière libérable sur une languette (44) autour de la bouche de l'orifice. Ledit orifice d'accès (20) peut être fermé hermétiquement de manière sélective à l'aide d'un bouchon complémentaire (22) fixé audit couvercle (12) par une sangle de fixation souple. Ledit dispositif d'obturation (10) comprend en outre une sangle de fixation souple (26) s'étendant dudit couvercle (12) s'encliquetant sur le bouton (48) se trouvant sur le raccord de conduit (40), retenant ainsi ledit couvercle (12) sur ledit raccord, lorsqu'il n'est pas utilisé.
