Definitions

  • This invention relates to furniture bases, particularly to bed bases, but the items described may be used for analogous support purposes e.g. as staging flooring or in packaging applications.
  • bed bases are substantial articles of construction requiring factory assembly. They are accordingly difficult to move around (particularly when they are double, queen size, king size or even emperor size beds) and to store and transport.
  • Bed bases are desirable in order to raise the sleeping surface, which may be a mattress, futon or the like, from the floor. This is preferred in many cultures.
  • bed bases may be constructed easily and simply in a collapsed fashion which can be erected by the purchaser to form a solid bed base.
  • a furniture base consisting of a pair of side beams, an expanded honeycomb material forming a layer attached to and extending between the side beams, a pair of transverse end beams holding the side beams apart and at least one sheet of material spanning the space between side beams and end beams and lying adjacent the surface of the expanded honeycomb material.
  • Such a base appropriately dimensioned for the desired purpose, e.g. a bed base, may be supplied to the customer in collapsed form i.e. with the one or two sheets not assembled, and with the honeycomb not expanded but lying between the two side beams in collapsed form.
  • edges of the sheets of material have a number of tabs and the side and end beams have a number of matching slots into which the tabs may be inserted in order to hold the assembly together.
  • the elasticity of the honeycomb material tends to pull the side beams together and helps to hold the entire structure together.
  • the structure of the present invention is particularly valuable for constructing easily collapsible and portable beds consisting of a bed base in accordance with the invention and a futon placed thereon.
  • the bed has a water bed unit interposed between a futon and the bed base. Because of the strength of the honeycomb structure, a very light base may be used to support the (when filled) heavy waterbed .
  • the preferred materials of construction for the bed base are corrugated cardboard for the beams, expandable cardboard or stiff paper or card honeycomb for the honeycomb, and corrugated cardboard sheets for the sheet materials either side of the expanded honeycomb.
  • the corrugated cardboard may be double or triple material. Alternatively, suitable heavy gauge card may be used. Such materials are relatively inexpensive to manufacture and fabricate and may easily be trimmed for visual appearance with conventional materials e.g. with cloth.
  • Figure 1 is a cross section through an assembled bed base according to the invention showing a water bed and mattress unit on top ?
  • Figure 2 is a plan view of a component of the bed base construction of Figure 1;
  • Figure 3 illustrates a honeycomb structure component in unexpanded form of the bed base construction of Figure 1;
  • Figure 4 shows in exploded partial view a corner of a furniture base according to the invention in an alternative embodiment.
  • a bed base is shown in cross-section consisting of two side beams 1 and 2 which are held apart by means of tv/o sheets of cardboard 3, 4 which lie above and below a filling of expanded honeycomb material 5.
  • the beams are identical and consist of a double layer of multiply corrugated cardboard which has been folded into a long C-fold so that it has an outer and inner layer 10, ii.
  • Glued to this structure is one of substantially equal length but slightly less width, one layer 13 of which is interrupted by cutout slots for a purpose to be described.
  • the other layer is denoted 12 in Figure 1.
  • a plurality of filler units as shown in Figure 3 are normally adhered between two beams 1 and 2. When it is desired to assemble the bed base, these beams are pulled apart, thus expanding the honeycomb from the assembly of strips 16.
  • a typical number of such units for manufacturing a bed base is three. These units are adhered between a pair of beams 1, 2 adjacent one another. When the beams are pulled apart, the honeycomb is expanded and slight gaps are left between the unit sections. These gaps do not materially affect the supporting power of the structure so formed. While pulled apart, the beams are lowered on to cardboard sheet 3, which has lateral tabs which are bent up and which enter the cutout slots in layer 13.
  • cross beams (not shown) are jointed by any convenient means to the ends of the side beams 1, 2.
  • Sheet 4 is shown in plan in Figure 2. This sheet has a fold line 18 down its centre, to enable it to be supplied in folded form.
  • the sheet 4 is unfolded flat and tabs 20 at the side and 21 at the ends are folded along respective fold lines 22, 23. Tabs 20 are inserted into the slots adjacent strip 12 as shown in Figure 1 and tabs 21 are inserted into similar slots in the end beams.
  • Sheet 3 is constructed similarly. In place of a central longitudinal fold 18, sheets 3 and 4 may have two suitably positioned transverse folds for transporation and storage.
  • capping members 25 are pressed over the exposed tops of strips 10 and 11.
  • These capping members may consist of an inner U-shaped cross-section core of corrugated cardboard covered with cloth.
  • the bed is completed by putting a water bed mattress 30 on top of the base and a futon 31 on top of the water bed mattress.
  • the bed base illustrated in Figures 1 to 3 of the accompanying drawings may be assembled together as described above and will stay so assembled without difficulty until it is to be dismantled. If the bed base is not to be dismantled, the various portions may be adhered together with glue, but this is not preferred since then the bed base can only be moved as a whole and cannot be dismantled and folded up for ease of subsequent transportation before being reassembled elsewhere.
  • FIG 4 shows an alternative and simplified construction.
  • Each side beam 40 and end beam 48 consists of six layers of corrugated cardboard, with the centre two layers being discontinuous to leave through-slots 41.
  • the upper 42 and lower 43 sheets of corrugated cardboard have tabs which have been folded to form two-ply tabs 44 as shown, held in place by staples 45.
  • Adhered between opposed side beams 40 are honeycomb components 49 of the type shown in Figure 3.
  • Upper sheet 42 and the outside of side beams 40 (and end beams 48) may be finished by cladding with cloth, wood veneer, a plastics foil or the like if desired.
