Description
BEDDING, IN PARTICULAR FOR PERSONS UNABLE TO MOVE
The present invention concerns bedding as specified in the preamble of the independent claim, in particular one for persons who are unable to move.
The liquid excretions of bed patients unable to move, in particular urine, are at present most commonly removed by absorbing them in a discardable napkin, or by means of a catheter. A discardable napkin causes remarkable detriment of moisture and odour in the bed and is therefore unpleasant to patient and environment. A catheter is uncomfortable and frequently causes in¬ flammation.
In prior art through the Finnish Patent No. 61993 is known a bedding mattress on which parallel grooves or projections have been provided and in or between these has been disposed a moisture-storing, detachable replacement part.One of the drawbacks of this type of bedding is that it is not suitable for heavy patients. Their body weight tends to press out moisture from the replaceable part, back onto the sur¬ face of the bedding. It is moreover necessary to attend to changing the replaceable part at regular intervals. In order to eliminate said drawback, in the Finnish Patent No. 68000 has been disclosed a design in which in the bedding has moreover been formed a channel and, placed therein, a moisture-storing part or a col¬ lection vessel, with which the parallel grooves of the bedding communicate. Liquid excrements will run along the parallel grooves into the collection vessel, which is changed when needed. The collection vessel is placed in conjunction with the bedding immediately adjacent to the patient. In this instance, too, care must be taken to change the collection vessel frequently enough. If this is not done, odour detriment unpleasant to the environment may occur because the collection vessel through the grooves communicates directly with the en-
vironment. Problems related with hygiene may also oc¬ cur.
Through U.S. Patent No. 666,458 is known a mattress having on its top surface a waterproof fabric and the central part of the mattress provided with ver¬ tical tubes which extend through the mattress. The tubes are formed of two parts elastically telescoped into each other. They communicate with a collector under the mattress and through an aperture in the centre of the latter, with a liquid collecting tank. The drawback of this design is its heavy construction and complex design. In addition, it is intended to re¬ place a normal mattress. The tubes extending through the mattress tend to collect waste and to become plug- ged. Therefore difficulties may be encountered in main¬ taining hygiene.
The object of the invention is to provide bed¬ ding for children, sick persons or other persons who are unable to move or bedridden and by means of which the drawbacks mentioned above can be avoided. With a view to accomplishing this, the bedding of the inven¬ tion is characterized by the features stated in Claim 1.
The ducts of the duct system in the bedding of the invention are, in part at least, formed of elastic tubular material and an impermeable layer is provided under the duct system. The elastic parts of the duct system present such cuts and/or closed end portions which constitute ports between the bedding and the duct system in those areas only where the duct is bent and/or subject to compression owing to the weight ac¬ ting on the bedding.
The bedding may for instance be placed under the patient in a hospital bed. It is well known that the patient's buttocks cause a depression, a slight one at least, of the surface layer of the mattress and of the bedding, resulting in the opening of apertures be-
tween the bedding and the duct system exactly at thos points where such ports are needed. With the aid of system that is connected to the bedding, and which i for instance a suction system, the liquid excretions o the human body, such as urine, are collected, throug the ports and duct system out from the bedding, an further into a suitable collection vessel. The primar advantage of the invention is that the bedclothes ca be kept comparatively dry with the aid of liquid col lection and ventilation of the bedding in spite of ex cretion of urine (or sweat). Secondly, the bedding, an the bed on the whole, can be continuously ventilated b the aid of bedding of this kind. Thirdly, the perso unable to move can be washed on this bedding, throug which the washing water is collected, while further th bedding is rapidly dried with the aid of ventilation.
The bedding of the invention is also easy to clean an disinfect, and it is durable and has a long life span.
The invention is described in detail in th following, referring to the drawings enclosed, wherein:-
Fig. 1 presents a bedding according to the invention, in projection; Fig. 2 presents the longitudinal section A-A of th bedding of Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 presents the cross section B-B of the bedding o Fig. 1;
Fig. 4 presents the cross section of another type of bedding according to the invention; Fig. 5 illustrates the operation of the bedding of Fig. 1;
Fig. 6 presents, magnified, the detail C of Fig. 3; Fig. 7 presents, magnified, the detail D of Fig. 5; Fig. 8 presents an alternative duct system design and, magnified, the detail C of Fig. 3;
Fig. 9 presents schematically another duct system suit¬ ed for use in the bedding, in top view; and
Fig. 10a presents the detail E of this duct system in ele ational view, when no weight load acts on the bedd¬ ing and
Fig. 10b, the same when a weight load acts on the bedding.
The bedding of the invention shown in Fig. 1 consists of elastic material. It is provided with a duct system 2, which has been disposed inside the bed¬ ding. There are apertures 3 between the bedding 1 and the duct system 2, Figs 5 and 7. The duct system 2 is connected with at least one aperture 4 leading to the outside of the bedding 1. The bedding 1 can by this aperture be connected to systems external to the bed¬ ding. The ducts 2a, 2b, 2c, 2d and 2e of the duct system are formed, in part at least, of elastic tubular material. Under the duct system 2 is an impermeable layer 5, which may be a course of plastic or plastic- impregnated fabric or equivalent so that it is at least impermeable to water. The duct system 2 has been dis¬ posed in immediate conjunction with the layer 5. ' The elastic parts of the ducts 2a, 2b, 2c, 2d and 2e are provided with cuts 3a, Figs 2 and 3, and/or closed end portions 3b, Figs 9 and 10, such that they form the said apertures 3 between the bedding 1 and the duct system 2 only in that area, e.g. the area 8 in Fig. 5, where the duct is bent and/or subjected to compression by effect of a force F, usually a weight, acting on the bedding 1. The cuts 3a are in the embodiment example just presented symmetric relative to the vertical axis. The cuts 3a may also be asymmetric relative to the vertical plane p-p of the duct, as can be seen in Fig. 8. If the cross section configuration of the duct 2c in Fig. 8 is compared with the face of a clock, the cut 3a extends advantageously from 2 o'clock to 7 o'clock, while i the embodiment of Fig. 7 the cut 3a extends from 3
o'clock to 9 o'clock. One ensures with the aid of an asymmetric cut that under mere compression acting on the duct at least part of its cuts 3a open to consti¬ tute apertures 3. In the above-presented embodiment example of the invention the duct system 2 has been implemented using a material which has an essentially round cross section. It is obvious, however, that the height dimen¬ sion of the tubular material is limited to diameter e.g. 6 to 7 mm, whereas the breadth can be on the order of several centimetres or even considerably greater. One such duct system alternative is presented in Fig. 4. The cross section of the duct 2b, 2c, 2d is in this case of strongly elliptic shape, or resembles a low, and wide, rectangle. However, the lower part of a duct like this is also provided with spaced cuts. The cuts may equally be located side by side on the sides of the duct.
In Figs 9 and 10 is disclosed, schematically, another, alternative design of the duct system. The ducts 2f,2g of the duct system have been formed at least in part of an elastic tubular member. The ducts 2f,2g may be provided with elastic, closed end portions 7 of which the mouth aperture 7a has been pre-pressed closed in vertical direction so that it will open under effect of a vertical force, such as a weight, F, Figs 10a and 10b. The ends of the ducts 2f,2g, Fig. 9, may be provided with similar closed end parts 7.
The bedding of the invention may in principle be implemented to be like a normal mattress or equival¬ ent, or as a comparatively thin structure. Upon the bedding 1 may in the latter instance be provided a sep¬ arate thin fabric, felt or even an undermattress, and the bedding 1 itself may be placed e.g. upon a normal mattress. It is however advantageous to carry out the bedding in the way that on the bedding 1 is provided a porous surface layer 8, such as a fibre fabric, and
between the duct system 2 and said surface layer 8, an intermediate layer or part 9, which consists of porous anά soft material. When constructed in this manner, the bedding will be comfortable to the patients or to other users. At the same time it ensures that the ducts will not be totally compressed so that the flow paths run¬ ning longitudinally in them would be blocked. The ducts 2a,2b,2c,2d,2e may, if desired, be inlaid in the inter¬ mediate part 9 in passages 10 there provided, as is shown with interrupted lines in Fig. 3.
The porous surface layer 8 may be substituted with, or upon it may be installed, a separate extra layer 11. It is advantageous to form this layer of a plurality of elements 11a, each such element having a surface which is, partly at least, upwardly curved and between said elements being provided grooves 12 and holes 13 in these, said holes communicating with the actual bedding 1. The elements 11a may be components which are in top view square, rectangular, round or shaped in another regular geometric configuration.
The extra layer 11 enables care to be taken that the patient upon the bedding 1 will not e.g. owing to the low construction of the bedding proper come into contact with the urine or other moisture collecting upon the impermeable layer 5 of the bedding. An extra layer like this is also advantageous for the reason that in this way good air circulation is ensured in the bedding. The grooves 12 and the holes 13 in them always connect the bedding 1 with external air, independent of whether the patient has been placed on the bedding or not. Moreover, the patient's weight has no influence.
The bedding 1 is connected, to external systems through the aperture 4. The external systems are e.g. various suction systems, by the aid of which the liquid excretions collected in the bedding are drawn off. With similar systems e.g. washing water used in washing the patient may also be eliminated. The aperture 4 may in
similar manner be connected with a suitable ventilation system. All measures just mentioned can be managed with one common suction system.
The bedding of the invention operates as fol- lows. In Fig. 5, the patient has been placed to lie on the bedding 1. The bedding 1 has been placed in the bed between the mattress proper and the patient. Under the patient's buttocks the mattress and the bedding 1 thereupon are at least partly compressed and most often at least partly pressed to a hollow. The tubular mem¬ bers 2a,2b,... of the duct system will then bend at this point, whereby the cuts 3a or equivalent open up to form apertures 3. When the suction system is in operation, for instance continuously, air is drawn into the duct system 2 through the apertures 3 expressly from under the patient's buttock. When the urine excreted by the patient passes through the layers 8,9 of the bedding, it gathers at the slightly hollowed point G upon the elastic and impermeable layer 5. In this area G the cuts 3a or equivalent have opened up to form apertures 3. By action of the suction present in the duct system 2, the liquid passes through the aper¬ tures 3 and through the duct system 2, further to the draining aperture 4 and by this route to a suitable collecting tank connected to the suction system.
In a bed provided with bedding 1 according to the invention also patient washing can be done. The bedclothes are removed from the bed and washing is per¬ formed upon the bedding, and the washing water is drawn through the bedding 1, the duct system 2 and the drain¬ ing aperture 4 to the collecting tank.
The suction means in the suction system may be any kind of suitable vacuum pump, which is connectable to one or several bedding sets and collecting tanks. Each bedding set may have a plurality of apertures leading out from the bedding, said apertures being con¬ nected by flexible tubing most advantageously to one
common collecting tank.
In the foregoing the invention has been des¬ cribed in the first place by referring to a few of its advantageous embodiments, but it is obvious that the invention can be modified in numerous ways within the scope of the inventive idea presented in the claims following below.
