Abstract

A method is provided for forming on a substrate an image-forming region which may be converted to a coloured from on exposure to U.V. light. The method comprises applying to the substrate a solution or dispersion comprising a 1,2-dihydro-2,2-dialkyl quinolinium salt (DHQ salt) of formula (I), wherein R1 and R2, which may be same or different represent lower alkyl groups, R3 representes hydrogen, lower alkyl or halogen, R4 - R7, which may be the same or different represent hydrogen, lower alkyl, lower alkoxy or halogen, R8 represents hydrogen or lower alkyl, and A- represents an anion, and a liquid solvent or dispersant and allowing the solution or dispersion to dry so as to deposit the DHQ salt on the substrate as a crystallite.
