Abstract

A device for opening a package which comprises non-tearable inside and outside bands (13, 14) adhesively attached to the inside and outside surfaces of the plastic package, and non-tearable strips (12) disposed on opposite sides of the inside band and adhesively attached to the outside surface of the package, the bands and the strips being disposed substantially parallel to each other whereby when the bands are freed from the package and pulled away from the package, the package can be readily opened with lines which extend along the surface of the package between the bands and strips.

Description

TEAR STRIP OPENING DEVICE
BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
The present invention relates to a tear strip opening device and more particularly, to a package, for example, a bag, carton, or envelope containing non-tearable inside and outside bands correspondingly positioned on an inside and outside surface of the package and disposed between small non-tearable ridges or strips attached to the outside surface of the package for use in easily and readily opening the package.
Many types of package opening devices have been developed in this industry to facilitate the opening of packages. For example, cartons such as sugar bags have been designed with perforated punch lines disposed along the middle of the cartons. Also, envelopes have been designed to contain a thread positioned along the bottom thereof. However, these packages suffer from a number of disadvantages, such as they are difficult to open easily and thus an opening device such as a knife, scissors, or paper opener, must be used for opening the packages. It has been found that thread positioned along the surface of the packages produces a zigzag cut in the paper or plastic when the packages are opened. Furthermore, to tear packages provided with perforated punch lines, made of thin paper products is very difficult.
Accordingly, to the U.S. Serial Nos. 901,744 filed by August 29, 1986, 901,741 filed by August 29, 1986, 947,806 filed by December 30, 1986, 042,787 filed by April 27, 1987, and another of an application filed by July 24, 1987, and U.S. Design Patent Serial Nos. 901,942 filed by August 29, 1987, and 947,966 filed December 30, 1986 entitled "TEAR STRIP OPENING DEVICE" owned by the inventor of the present invention, it is notable that the inventions does not disclose the use of an outside band which is positioned on the outside surface along a tear line between adjacent non-tearable strips and is corresponded with an inside band attached to the inside surface of the package. OBJECTS AND SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION
Accordingly, it is an object of the present invention to provide a tear strip opening device for use in producing a straight opening in a package in an easy manner.
Another object of the present invention is to provide package which utilizes metal or fiber inside and outside bands tightly attached thereto for facilitating the easy opening of a package.
A further object of the present invention is to provide a package containing a non-tearable material e.g., metal or fiber bands positioned on the inside and outside surfaces thereof and a non-tearable material e.g., metal or fiber strips disposed outside surface of the package and on opposite sides of the non-tearable inside material band. The inside band is corresponded with the outside band. Thus the bands disposed on inside and outside surfaces of the package and the adjacent non-tearable strips are a substantially parallel relationship. For example, the bands can be positioned along the middle of the package where it is sealed with a glue on the surface of the packaging materials such as paper, plastic, or the like and the non-tearable strips are disposed on the reverse side of the inside band.
Other objects and further scope of applicability of the present invention will become apparent from the detailed description given hereinafter. It should be understood, however, that the detailed description and specific examples, while indicating preferred embodiments of the invention, are given by way of illustration only, since various changes and modifications within the spirit and scope of the invention will become apparent to those skilled in the art from this detailed description.
The present invention relates to a tear strip device utilized in a package which comprises metal or fiber bands disposed along the middle of the package on the inside and outside surfaces thereof, metal or fiber strips disposed along the reverse side of the package and on opposite sides of the inside band. An opening tab is disposed at one end of the band whereby the package can be readily torn open along straight tear lines disposed between the bands and strips by pulling the opening tab.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS
The present invention will become more fully understood from the detailed description given hereinbelow and the accompanying drawings which are given by way of illustration only, and thus are not limitative of the present invention, and wherein:
Fig. 1 is a front view of a bag including the tear strip device disposed at the middle portion thereof according to the present invention?
Fig. 2 is a cross-sectional view of Fig. 1, taken along line 2-2 of Fig. 1 and showing the tear strip of the present invention;
Fig. 3 is a front view of the aluminum package containing the tear strip device disposed along the upper front surface thereof in another embodiment of the present invention; and
Fig. 4 is a cross-sectional view of Fig. 3 taken along line 4-4 of Fig. 3 and showing the tear strip of the present invention. DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION
Referring now in detail to the drawings for the purpose of illustrating the present invention, Figs. 1 and 2 show a plastic package 10 and non-tearable material such as metal or fiber inside band 14 attached with a glue 16 to the reverse or inside and outside band 13 attached with the glue 16 to the outside of the plastic package 10. Small and non-tearable metal or fiber strips 12 are attached with the glue 16 to the outside surface of the plastic package cover 11 (Fig. 2) . The non-tearable metal or fiber strips 12 are disposed substantially parallel to each other and on opposite side of the metal or fiber inside band 14 and on same side of the outside band 13. One end of the metal or fiber bands 13 and 14 extend to seal for forming an opening tab 15 which functions as a handle for facilitating the opening of the plastic package. The opening tab 16 can be disposed at both ends of the bands 13 and 14 of the plastic package 10.
The tear lines are provided only at the package cover 11. The package is made of plastic, paper, or the like. The bands 13 and 14 can be made of any type of material which is sufficiently strong to cut plastic or paper products. Suitable strips 12 or bands 13 and 14 materials include flexible plastic materials such as polyvinylchloride or the like and flexible metal materials such as aluminum, stainless steel, fiber, or the like. The fiber materials of the strips 12 or bands 13 are synthetic fiber such as Nylon.
Figs. 3 and 4 illustrate another embodiment of the present invention. In this embodiment, the tear strip device is located along the upper front surface of the aluminum package 10. Both of the small plastic, metal, or fiber strips or ridges 12 are disposed on the outside and the bands 13 and 14 are attached by the glue 16 disposed on the inside or outside surface 11 of the aluminum package 10 along the tear lines. The plastic, fiber, or metal strips 12 are attached with glue to the paper or plastic 11 of the package 10. One ends 15 of plastic or aluminum bands 13 and 14 extend from the both sides to meet for forming the opening tap 15.
In operation, when opening the package 10, the opening tap 15 is pulled and the fiber or metal bands 13 and 14 is torn along the lines in the package cover 11. At this time, since both sides of the lines are provided with fiber or metal strips 12, the bands 13 can easily open the package.
In another embodiment of the present invention, the aluminum to be formed into an aluminum package 10 is provided with the metal such as aluminum or stainless steel bands 13 and 14 (Figs. 3 and 4) . The metal such as aluminum ridges or strips 12 which are with the glue 16 to the outside of the package 10.
The invention being thus described, it will be obvious that the same may be varied in many ways- Such variations are not to be regarded as a departure from the spirit and scope of the invention, and all such modifications as would be obvious to one skilled in the art are intended to be included in the scope of the following claims.
