Abstract

The invention relates to an applying means for rolls of for example roofing-felt. The roll (100) bearing against the underlying surface is intended to be unrolled by means of frictional drive rolls (29) of a propelling unit (20) in contact with the peripheral surface of the roll. The propelling unit (20) is pivotably arranged at one end of a lever mechanism (50) mounted at the frame (12, 12) of the device, the other end of said mechanism supporting the support wheels (40, 40) of the device so that the weight of the device is transferred via the support wheels to the contact force of the drive means (29) acting against the roll (100).

Description

A Device for Applying Wound Flexible Sheet onto an
Underlying Surface
This invention relates to a device according to the preamble of claim 1 for applying wound flexible sheet onto an underlying surface.
In a known laying device (SE-C-134666) the roll in contact with the underlying surface is pivotably connected in the applying or unrolling operation with the frame of the device via swinging arms capable of compensating for the decreasing radius of the roll during the unrolling procedure. This device is propelled manually and is not provided with any burner unit. In a known, motor-driven laying device (SE-A-8400523-8) the roll is rotatably supported above the underlying surface by the frame of the device while the device is propelled and the wound flexible sheet is fed by means of a drive roll pressing the sheet against the underlying surface. One disadvantage of this device is that it will be relatively heavy due to its construction which makes it less suitable to be lifted onto a roof and used for applying roofing-felt.
One object of this invention is to provide a relatively light, motor-driven device of the kind indicated above where the roll to be unrolled is in direct contact with the underlying surface.
This is achieved by means of the characteristic features defined in the appended claims.
A device according to the invent ion has a propulsion unit provided with frictional drive means pivotably arranged at the frame of the device and actuated by a force to contact with the peripheral surface of the roll. As the drive means acts directly on the peripheral surface of the roll the propulsion velocity of the device will always be as great as the constant peripheral velocity of the propulsion means, and there- fore the speed of the drive motor need not be adapted to the decreasing radius of the roll in the laying-out operation.
In a preferred embodiment of the invention the frictional drive means is actuated through the weight of the device to contact with the peripheral surface of the roll via a lever mechanism connected with the support wheels of the device. If the lever mechanism is dimensioned in a suitable manner the horizontal position of the device will be substantially unchanged during the laying-out work in that the support wheels are raised relative to the frame to an extent corresponding to the decreasing radius of the roll.
Further characteristic features and advantages of the invention appear from the following description of illustrative examples with reference to the enclosed drawings, wherein Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a laying device according to the invention, Fig. 2 is a cross-sectional view of a laying device substantially corresponding to Fig. 1, Fig. 3 is a lateral view of a mechanism for raising and lowering the burner unit of, the device and Fig. 4 shows schematically an arrangement for operating the different functions of the device. The laying device shown in Fig. 1 comprises a frame 10 supporting the main components of the device, viz. a propulsion unit 20, a pair of support wheels 40, 40, a lever mechanism 50 connecting the support wheels 40 with the propulsion unit 20, a burner unit 50 and a control shaft 140. In Fig. 1 the laying device is also shown with the. roll 100 to be laid-out.
The frame 10 comprises a pair of spaced opposite plane end sections 12, 12 which are connected with one another by means of an L-beam 14 arranged rearwards be- low (Fig. 2), the ends of which are e.g. screwed onto the end sections 12, 12 (not shown), and by means of a rod 16 arranged in front at the top, extending through the end sections and pivotably supporting the control shaft 140 in a way not shown in detail.
Closely above the L-beam 14 and partly enclosed by this a shaft 18 pivotably mounted at the end sections 12, 12 extends and is nonrotatably connected with the lever mechanism 50 forming a fulcrum for this. The lever mechanism 50 comprises two similar bent levers 52 (only one is shown) which are arranged on axially opposite sides of the propulsion unit 20. One arm 54 of the levers 52 supports the common shaft 42 of the support wheels 40, 40 while their other lever 56 is pivotably mounted at a front end of a support plate 22 located immediately at the roll 100 which plate supports the propulsion unit 20. At the rear end of the support plate 22 spaced from the roll 100 one end of a link 24 is pivotably mounted, the other end of which is pivotably mounted at the outer end of a support bracket 25 which, in turn, is rigidly connected with the L-beam 14 between the two levers 52. As is apparent from Fig. 2 the support plate 22 is arranged obliquely above the roll 100 and directed substantially radially to this. As the support plate 22 forms a .link mechanism substantially in the form of a parallelogram together with the support bracket 26, the second lever 56 and the link 24, the support plate 22 can perform movements towards and away from the shaft of the roll 100.
The propulsion unit 20 arranged on the support plate 22 comprises an electric motor 27, a reduction gear 28 and a pair of frictional drive rolls 29 arranged on both sides of this intended to engage drivingly with the periphery surface of the roll 100. The reduction gear 28 supporting and being driven by the electric motor 27 is rigidly connected to the support plate 22 via a bracket 30. The drive rolls 29, 29 which are both connected with the output shaft (not shown) of the reduction gear 28 are disposed in recesses 32 of the support plate 22. The outer ends of the drive rolls 29 are mounted in bearing brackets 34 which are screwed onto the support plate 22.
The burner unit 60 has a plurality of gas-driven burner nozzles 62 (Fig. 2) which are distributed with a suitable division on a burner pipe 64 arranged in front of the roll 100 and in parallel with the shaft thereof. Plates 66 with end sections 68 diverging towards the roll 100 are arranged on the burner pipe 54 to direct the gas streaming out of the nozzles 62 towards the roll 100. Between the burner unit 60 and the end sections 12 of the frame 10 metal nets not snown can be arranged which are intended to prevent the heat from the burner unit 60 from being concentrated through draft towards the central range of the roll 100.
The burner pipe 64 is supported at its outer ends by a pair of elongate lateral supports movably arranged at the associated end sections 12, 12.
In the embodiment shown in Fig. 1 the lateral supports 70, 70 have a rectangular cross-section and each thereof is movably mounted at an associated end section 12 by means of four support rolls 76. Each lateral support 70 is supported against the underlying surface via a wheel 72 and has an upper end stop 74.
In the embodiment shown in Figs. 2 and 3 each lateral support 80 has a circular, cylindrical cross section and is movably mounted in a pair of spaced ball roll bushes 82, 82 connected with the associated end section 12.
As is apparent from the embodiment shown in Fig. 3 the height position of each lateral support 80 is arranged to be adjusted by the pivotable shaft 18 of the lever mechanism via a first pulley wheel 95 rigidly mounted on the shaft 18, a second pulley wheel 90 mounted on a shaft 92, a first line 94 connected with the pulley wheels, a sector pulley wheel 88 connected coaxially with the second pulley wheel 90 and a second line 86, one end of which is connected with the sector pulley wheel 88 and the other end of which is connected with the lateral support 80 via an attachment 84.
An arrangement for fastening and releasing the roll 100 at the laying device is shown schematically in Fig. 4. The rolls 100 (for example rolls with roofing-
-felt) are provided by the supplier wound on an inner case 102 of for example cardboard of a definite inside diameter. A retaining sleeve 104 of steel is arranged according to the invention for the inner cases 102 which has such an outside diameter that it can be easily pushed into and extracted from the inner case 102. Both ends of the retaining sleeve 104 (only one is shown in Fig. 4) which preferably have a bevelled surface at the inner edge 106 are intended to engage a clamping unit 108 (I) and (II), respectively, arranged at each end section 12.
In the embodiment schematically shown in Fig. 4 each clamping unit 108 has a piston rod 110 movably arranged in the associated end section 12. At the end facing the roll 100 the piston rod 110 supports a rotatably mounted engaging means 112 not shown in detail having a conical engagement end 114 and an annular flange 116 arranged as stop surface. At its other end the piston rod 110 is provided with a piston 118 which is sealingly received in a cylindrical chamber 120 of a housing 122 connected with the end section 12. At is free end the piston is intended to be actuated by a gas pressure in a direction clamping the roll 100 via a channel 124 ending in the chamber 120. At its opposite end the piston is permanently actuated in a direction releasing the roll 100 by a return spring 126, one end of which acts against the rear side of the piston 118 and the other end of which acts against a flange 130 of a stop case 128 mounted on the piston rod and intended to limit the stroke of the piston rod 110. Fig. 4 also shows schematically a simple block diagram of an arrangement for operating the two clamping units 108 (I) and (II), Gas for the burner 60 is supplied from a pressurized gas source 132 (e.g. an LPG-tube). The laying device is supplied with energy via an electric power cable not shown. An electric control line 150 extends from an electric/electronic control panel 142 (see also Fig. 1) on the control shaft 140 to an electromagnetically controlled directional valve 152 arranged in a gas line 154 which, in turn, extends between the gas source 132 and the burner 60. The directional valve 152 is arranged to be shifted by means of a switch 144 with two positions on the control panel 142. Between the directional valve 152 and the burner 60 the gas line 154 has each one branching 156 and 158 which are connected to the passageways 124 of the clamping units. Another electromagnetically controlled directional valve 160 is preferably arranged on the gas line 154 between the branching 156 and the burner 60, which is also arranged to be adjusted from the control panel 142 in a suitable way not shown in detail. As is further indicated in Fig. 4 the propulsion unit 20 is intended to be operated from the control panel 142 via electric control lines 162. For this purpose the control panel can be provided with a pair of push-button switches (for example with spring return) 146 and 148 for forward and backward drive of the electric motor 27 of the propulsion unit 20. 164 designates a piezoelectric igniter of known type arranged in the gas line 154 at the burner 60 which is intended to generate a spark via a piston mechanism (not shown) actuated by the gas pressure which spark ignites the gas streaming out of the nozzles of the burner 60 when the valve 160 is opened.
The arrangement shown in Fig. 4 for operation of the different functions of the laying device is only an example and can be varied in many different ways. For example, as to the control panel 142 this can have several functions collected in a joy stick having several degrees of freedom instead of separate switches. A laying device according to the invention is intended to be used and work substantially as follows:
Before a new roll 100 is to be laid out the retaining sleeve 104 is first inserted into the opening limited by the inside of the inner case 102. The roll 100 with the retaining sleeve 104 is thereafter positioned between the end sections 12 of the laying device. In order to facilitate this a lever 19 can be nonrotatably connected with the shaft 18, as indicated with dash- and dot lines in Fig. 2, which lever can be manually retracted bringing along the drive unit 20 to leave room for the roll 100. For clamping the roll the directional valve 152 (Fig. 4) is shifted via the switch 144 from the closed position shown to the open position, the pressurized burner gas from the gas source 132 streaming via the gas line 154 into and pressurizing the branchings 156, 158 so that the piston 118 of each clamping unit 108 (I) and (II) is actuated by the gas pressure and moves the piston rod 110 towards the roll 100 overcoming the force from the return spring 128. The engagement means 112 mounted rotatably at the piston rod 110 is then pushed into the retaining sleeve 104 until the motion of the piston rod 110 is stopped by the stop case 128 and/or the annular flange 116. In this state the roll 100 is clamped to the laying device which can be driven by means of the propulsion unit 20 via the control panel 142 (without the roll 100 being unrolled) to a desired starting point for the laying procedure.
Before the very laying procedure the outer end of the sheet wound onto the roll is about straight in front of the burner unit 60. The gas is permitted to stream into the burner unit 60 through shifting of the directional valve 160 from the closed position shown to the open position via for example the switch 150 which also actuates the propulsion unit for driving in forward direction or via a separate switch not shown.
While the gas is streaming out of the burner nozzles 62 (Fig. 2) the piston of the piezoelectric igniter 164 (not shown) is also actuated by the gas pressure so that the igniter is activated and generates the spark igniting the outflowing gas. The restrictions or flow areas of the burner nozzles are so small that the gas pressure acting on the pistons 118 of the clamping units is not allowed to decrease to such an extent that the springs 128 can press back the piston rods 110 and consequently release the roll 100. By means of a turning adjustment of the burner pipe 64 the nozzles 62 of the burner unit are substantially directed towards the confines between the roll 100 and the underlying surface (Fig. 2) so that this is heated together with an adhesive layer plasticizable by heat (e.g. bitumen layer) on the outside of the sheet wound onto the roll 100. Accordingly, the sheet thus heated will adhere at contact with the underlying surface.
As indicated above, the propulsion unit 20 is also started in a forward driving direction at operation of the switch 150 so that the frictional drive rolls 29 rotate anti-clockwise in Fig. 2 and provide this through the engagement with the periphery of the roll 100 with a rotational clockwise movement for unrolling the sheet adhering to the underlying surface according to the above. The pressure of the drive rolls 29 against the roll 100 is provided by the weight of the drive unit 20 and the normal force acting in dependence on the weight of the device from the underlying surface on the support wheels 40 and being passed on to the drive rolls
29 via the lever mechanism 50. When the diameter of the roll 100 is reduced in the laying process the pressure force of the frictional drive rolls 29 is maintained in that the lever mechanism follows suit to a corresponding extent while the whole device approaches the underlying surface with a substantially unchanged horizontal position.
During the laying procedure the burner unit 60 is at a substantially constant distance from the heating area due to the fact that when the end sections 12 approach the underlying surface and the diameter of the roll 100 is reduced, the lateral supports 70 (Fig. 1) or 80 (Fig. 3) are moved upwards/rearwards to a corresponding extent by means of the wheels 72 (Fig. 1) and the power-transmitting mechanism described in connection with Fig. 3 and driven by the lever mechanism.
When the roll 100 has been completely unrolled and is to be replaced with a new roll the switch 144 with two positions is shifted so that the directional valve 152 (and also the directional valve 160) return to the position shown in Fig. 4. The supply of gas from the gas source 132 is then shut off so that the burner unit 60 is put out and the piston rods (110) of the clamping units 108 (I) and (II) are pressed back by the associated springs 128 when the gas pressure in the line 154 is reduced (ventilated through the directional valve 152). The remaining inner case 102 of the consumed roll 100 can thereafter be removed and optionally replaced with a new roll 100 in the way described above.

Claims

1. Device for applying a flexible sheet wound on a roll in contact with the underlying surface and provided with a heat-plasticizable adhesive layer, said device comprising a frame, at least one support wheel connected with the frame, a motor-driven propulsion unit, a burner unit and mounting means arranged at the frame for rotatable mounting of the roll, c h a r a c t e r i z e d in that the propulsion unit (20) has a frictional drive means (29) pivotably arranged at the frame (10) and actuated by a force to contact with the peripheral surface of the roll (100).
2. The device of claim 1, c h a r a c t e r i z e d in that the frict-ional drive means (29) is actuated by gravity to contact with the peripheral surface of the roll (100) via a lever mechanism (50) connected with said support wheel (40).
3. The device of claim 1 or 2, c h a r a c t e r i z e d in that the propulsion unit (20) with the drive means (29) is pivotably arranged at the frame (12) via the lever mechanism (lever 56) and a link (24).
4. The device of any one of the preceding claims, c h a r a c t e r i z e d in that the burner unit (60) is movably mounted to the frame (12) via lateral supports (80).
5. The device of claim 4, c h a r a c t e r i z e d in that the burner unit (60) is supported against the underlying surface via wheels (72).
6. The device of claim 4, c h a r a c t e r i z e d in that the lateral supports (80) of the burner unit are arranged via at least one power-transmitting mechanism (84-96) to be moved in dependence on pivotal motion of a pivot axle (18) of the lever mechanism (50) mounted to the stand (10).
7. The device of claim 6, c h a r a c t e r i z e d in that the power-transmitting mechanism has a first pulley wheel (96) ridgidly connected to said axle (18), a second pulley wheel (90) rotatably mounted to the frame (12), a first line (94) connecting the pulley wheels, a sector pulley wheel (88) ridgidly connected coaxially with the second pulley wheel (90) and a second line (86) connecting the sector line pulley (88) and its associated lateral supports (80).
