Abstract
A filter element comprising two outer layers of inert porous material and interposed between said outer layers one inner layer of inert porous material.
Description
FILTER ELEMENT FOR LIQUID CHROMATOGRAPHY
The performance of an analytical column in a liquid chromatography system, and in particular a High Performance Liquid Chromatograph (HPLC), can be adversely effected by contaminants in the sample or the mobile phase or both.
To protect the column from contaminants, and because the column is subjected to high pressure liquid flows (typically 500 to 20,000 psi) inherent in the HPLC technique, it has been found, in practice, that a porous metal filter is necessary to trap the contaminants.
However, many samples to be analysed by the HPLC column technique will react with porous metal filters causing sample degradation and therefore loss of sample integrity.
SUBSTITUTE SHEET
One of the objects of the invention is to overcome sample degradation in the HPLC system by revealing a filter, (commonly referred to as a frit) which is made from composite non-metallic materials and specifically inert.
The filter or frit can consist of relatively thin layers of inert porous materials detailed as A, B and C. A and C, for example, can be a High Density Polymer having a thickness which typically can be made to vary between 0.1 to 3 millimetres depending on sample type, chromatographic conditions, and the like. The other or middle layer, or membrane, B, can be, for example, a fibrous material made from glass, ceramic, cellulose carbon, or a similar inert material. This middle layer having a thickness which can vary, depending on application, between 0.05 to 1 millimetre.
The outer layers A & C of the filter provide mechanical strength for the middle or membrane layer which is an object of the invention. Furthermore, the outer layers are designed to have greater porosity than the inner layer and in practice a multiple porosity filter and varying density is less susceptible to blockage than a filter of uniform porosity and density. This is also revealed as an object of the invention. Also revealed is that particulate packing material from the bore of the column becomes embedded into the outer layer of the filter which also serves as an integral part of the filter.
Another object of the invention is to reveal that the composite materials used in the manufacture of the filter, enables the filter to be much thinner than conventional filters. This advantageously ensures the mobile phase will pass through the filter with minimal restriction.
