Abstract
Pillow (10) to support the head (32) whose surfaces (20), (30), (31) turned towards the head (32) are metalized and mirror-like so that, by steady reflection of the sun's rays, tanning of the face (33) is facilitated.
Description
PILLOW WITH MIRROR-LIKE SURFACE FOR TANNING THE FACE
The ordinary type of reflector placed close to the head to direct the rays of the sun onto the face and hasten the tanning process is a frequent sight, as are similarly the cushions or pillows to put under the head, some of which can be inflated when required.
People who seek exposure to the sun to become tanned, es¬ pecially at tourist resorts, on beaches, snowfields and other places, must procure both reflectors and pillows if they wish to have something soft under their hands and tan rapidly .
Simultaneous use of the pillow and the reflector is neither simple nor convenient especially as the direction of the sun's rays varies continually and also because it is no easy matter to move the reflectors round the head and be¬ hind it using the hands for this purpose.
The above invention avoids these drawbacks and offers con¬ siderable advantages as will be explained below. Subject of the inven ion is a pillow for the head, its sur- face being metalized and mirror bright so that, by reflect¬ ing the rays of the sun, face tanning is assisted. The pillow is made of two thin flexible sheets of plastic material, heat-welded and sealed at the edges. A valve is provided for inflating the pillow which can be done at the time of use.
The specular effect is produced by inflation which, elimi¬ nating the folds in the surface turned towards the face, makes it uniformly smooth creating a high factor of reflec¬ tion as regula as it is undiffused. The pillow comprises three parts, a central part where the head rests and wo lateral parts heat-sealed at the edges.
The central area is of a size suitable for supporting the head while the lateral areas, or wings, are situated one at each side of the head in such a way as to direct the rays of the sun towards the face. The central area presents, a number of transversal heat- sealed seams parallel to those marking the boundaries be¬ tween said area and the lateral wings, said seams creating a series of oblong volumes parallel to the longitudinal ax¬ is of the head. All the volumes created by said heat-sealed seams communi¬ cate one with another so that by moving the head across the volumes of the central area and varying the pressure placed on them, the angle between the central area and the lateral wings can be varied at the same time. Said wings can therefore be made to approach the face more or less closely in relation to the position of the sun and to the intensity required, varying the direction of rays onto the face. In this way the concentration of sun's rays and thus of the tanning effect secured, can be modified.
In some types of execution the front side of the wings, namely that nearest the face is, in varying degrees, con¬ vex, flat or concave giving rise, respectively, to a les¬ ser or greater concentration of solar rays on the face and so producing a lighter or a deeper tan.
The difference in geometrical form of the wings between the convex back and the substantially flat, or more or less concave front is obtained by giving greater amplitude to that part of the plastic sheet forming the back side of the wings, compared. to the front side, in order to provide the greater surface needed to produce a markedly convex shape
for the back compared with the front side which is less convex, or is flat or concave.
Characteristics and purposes of the invention will be made even clearer by the following examples of its execution illustrated by drawings. '
Fig. 1 Perspective view of the pillow with mirror-like surfaces and convex wings, uninflated, seen from the front . Fig. 2 The same pillow inflated. Fig. 3 Perspective view of the pillow with mirror-like surfaces and internal wing sides flat, uninflated, seen from the back. Fig. 4 The same pillow as in Fig. 3, inflated. Fig. 5 Perspective view of the pillow with mirror-like surfaces and with concave internal wing sides, un¬ inflated, seen from the back. Fig. 6 The same pillow as in Fig. 5, inflated. The pillow ( 10) is made from two sheets ( 12), ( 13) of me¬ talized plastic material. By means of the peripheral heat sealing ( 14) and the cen¬ tral heat-sealed seams ( 15), ( 16), ( 17,), ( 18), ( 19) , a central area (20) is created divided into four compartments (24), (25), (26), (27) of an oblong shape, and two lateral compartments (21), (22). As the lateral compartments are of a much greater volume than the internal ones, they come to assume the form of two wings as shown in Figure 2. In Figure 2 the pillow is seen inflated with a person's head resting on its central area.
As Figure 2 clearly shows, the pressure of the head on the central compartments au omatically causes greater inflation of the wings (21), (22) which are brought closer to the
head as pressure increases.
The various compartments , including the wings, communicate one with another through the unsealed area (23). As will be seen in Fig.2, due to internal pressure, the inner surfaces (30), (31) of the wings are fully stretched and therefore become mirror-like.
It follows that the rays of the sun are reflected towards the face (33) of the head (32) lying on the pillow, thus hastening the tanning process. By moving the head from one compartment to another, namely from compartment (24) to another (25), (26), (27), the slant of one or other wing (21), (22), can be varied at will causing the rays to reflect on one or other side of the face (33). - The valve (29) is placed at the corner (28) of the pillow.
Figures 3 and 4 respectively illustrate, uninflated and in¬ flated,a -p_ll"owC40) substantially similar to the one alrea¬ dy described except that the wings ( 1), (42) (the pillow is shown overturned compared with the one in Fig.1) are made by having sealed seams (43) such as to allow infla¬ tion (48)-, (49) of the lower plastic sheet (47) compared with the upper plastic sheet (46).
To procure this inflation, before heat sealing a greater amount of lower plastic sheet(47) is concentrated in the Wing areas (48), (49), compared with the opposing wing areas (44), (45) of the upper plastic sheet (46).
It follows that, on inflation and especially when this is completed, areas (48,(49) forming the front side of wings (41), (42) become convex while the internal areas of said wings (44), (45) are flat, fully stretched and therefore perfectly mirror-like.
By varying the position of the person's head on the cen¬ tral compartments ( 51 ) , ( 52 ) , (53 ) , (54 ) , it is always poss¬ ible to obtain the desired slant by one or other of the wings (41), (42) to direct the reflected rays on one side of the face or on the other.
Figures 5 and 6 illustrate a pillow similar to those pre¬ viously described except that the pillow (60) presents the lower sheet (62) opposite to the upper sheet (61) having the usual sealing (63) round the periphery, with areas(64) and (65) corresponding to the wings (66), ( 67 ), cons iderably swollen, even before inflation, compared with the opposite areas of the front sheet (61).
Said considerably swollen effect is obtained by concentra¬ ting in said areas, prior to heat sealing (63) a greater quantity of sheeting compared with the front area.
It follows that when the pillow is inflated through the valve (70), the swollen areas (64), (65) give rise to con¬ vex surfaces while the opposite inner areas (71), (72) be¬ come, due to tension created by air pressure, concave as can be seen in Figure 6.
It is clear that, by varying the position of the head(73) on compartments ( 74 ) , ( 75 ) , ( 76 ) , ( 77 ) , the wings (66), (67) change their position and slant causing varyingly high or direct concentration on the face, as shown, of reflected sun's rays (78), (79). Advantages These are evident.
By means of a single object it becomes possible simulta¬ neously to rest the head comfortably and cause sun's rays to be reflected on the face in the desired concentration and direction even though the position of the sun contin¬ uously varies. A deep tan is thus quickly achieved by very simple means and practically insti'nctive movements.
