Abstract
The invention relates to a data processing desk, comprising a desk top (1, 2, 11, 12) whose front edge is provided with a recess (5) for a keyboard unit. The desk top is provided with a glass-covered opening (4) and below the desk top level there are means for suspending a monitor in an inclined position below opening (4). A top plate (7) covering said recess (5) is adapted to be shifted between a recess-covering position and a shifted position between monitor and recess. Said monitor opening (4) with its flanges (11, 12), a keyboard unit supporting level (6) and said shiftable top plate (7) make up a module (3), which is structurally separate from the remainder of the desk and which can be fitted between two rectangular desk top members (1, 2).
Description
Data processing desk
The present invention relates to a data processing desk, comprising a desk top whose front edge is provided with a recess for a keyboard unit. With the prior art data processing desks, a monitor must be mounted upon the desk top and a keyboard unit supporting level is often adapted to be pulled from inside the desk to a pulled-out operating position. Thus, it is difficult for an operator to find a proper distance with respect to both monitor and keyboard unit. In addition, there will be a large viewing angle between monitor and keyboard unit. However, the operator must alternately observe both of these, which complicates the working and strains the eyes and neck muscles.
An object of the invention is to provide a novel type of data processing desk, whereby the above problems can be essentially mitigated and, further, a more efficient use of a desk top can be achieved.
This object is accomplished on the basis of the characterizing features set forth in the annexed claims.
One embodiment of the invention will now be described in more detail with reference made to the accompanying drawings, in which
fig. 1 shows a data processing desk of the invention in perspective view.
Fig. 2 shows the central structural module for a data processing desk of the invention in perspective view.
Fig. 3 shows a cross-section of a data processing desk of the invention and
fig. 4 shows the same as fig. 3 with the addition that dash-and-dot-lines illustrate possible adjustments of monitor support and keyboard level.
A desk as shown in fig. 1 includes two rectangular desk tops 1 and 2 which form the end surfaces of a desk. Between them is fitted a separate structural module 3 including a glass-covered monitor opening 4 flanked by rectangular desk top members 11 and 12. In alignment with opening 4 the front edge of the desk is provided with a recess 5 for a keyboard unit. The floor of recess 5 consists of a keyboard unit supporting level 6, supported in grooves 22 in the horizontal side braces
13 of module 3 (fig. 2) . The height of supporting level 6 is adjustable by inserting it in upper or lower grooves 22. A top plate 7 covering said recess 5 is adapted to be movable between a position covering said recess 5 and a keyboard unit fitted therein and a position set between a monitor and recess 5. In figs. 1 and 2, the top plate 7 is shown in the latter position from which it can thus be pulled to a horizontal position in which the top surface of top plate 7 is flush with the rest of the desk top surface. Thus, when proceeding from keyboard operation to other work and vice versa, the operator need not move closer to and further away from the desk. Hence, the viewing distance to a monitor does not change either.
The rear ends of horizontal side braces 13 are fastened to a desk back plate 15 (fig. 3). The top surface of horizontal braces 13 are provided with free borders
14 for positioning the edges of desk top members 1 and
2 thereupon .
Fig. 3 illustrates one example for suspending or supporting a monitor 19 below monitor opening 4 in an inclined position so as to direct a display surface approximately to face the viewing direction. An essential feature is that a viewing angle between keyboard unit and monitor is very small, so that the operator is able to see both at the same time. For example, when viewing the monitor, the operator's field of vision simultaneously covers the keyboard. This facilitates and speeds up the work while the monitor viewing direction is natural; just like reading a paper on a table.
Monitor 19 rests upon a base plate 16 which is secured by a hook 17 to a desk kick board 8. The kick board 8 may be provided with a plurality of superimposed holes for said hook 17 for selecting the height of base plate 16. The lower edge of base plate 16 is provided with an abutment 18, the lower rear edge of monitor 19 resting against it. Also the abutment 18 can be set at different heights in base plate 16, as shown in fig. 4 by dash-and-dot lines. Also the kick board,8, which is secured at its ends to board-shaped desk legs 9, can be adapted to be swung about a pivot 21 to various angular positions. Thus, there is obtained a sufficient number of possible adjustments in order to accomplish the support and suspension for monitors of varying shapes and sizes in a manner that an upper monitor corner 20 can be accurately positioned adjacent to the rear edge of monitor opening 4. In the illustrated embodiment, said base plate 16 is adapted to be held in an elevated position by means of belts or straps 23 that can be tightened by a buckle 24. The suspens
ion of monitor 19 can also be achieved solely by meansof belts. Thus, the position of monitor 19 is determined by the position of upper corner 20 adjacent to the rear edge of monitor opening 4 and, on the other hand, by desk back board 15.
A central processing unit can be fitted e.g. in a space 10 shown in fig. 1.
