Abstract

Spinnaker pole (6) consisting of a profile. In the rear end of the pole, the inboard pole end fitting (5) is mounted. In front of the inboard pole end fitting (5) in or on the distal half of the spinnaker pole (6) guides (22) for jibing lines (23, 24) are mounted. Starting from the leeward (13) and the windward spinnaker sheet (15) respectively, the two jibing lines (23, 24) run via the front end (7) of the spinnaker pole (6), via the guides (22) on the pole and the sheaves mounted on the mast (26) above the mast mounting device (27) for the spinnaker pole (6) to a winch or a cleat on the mast (1) or on the deck of the yacht (14). On the spinnaker pole, a stop line (25) and a downhaul (17) are mounted. During the jibing manoeuvre, according to the invention, the windward jibing line (23) is slacked. The spinnaker pole (6) will now fall and tighten up the spinnaker pole stop line (25). The spinnaker pole stop line has a fixed length, permitting the front end of the spinnaker pole (7) to pass beneath the headstay (2). When the leeward jibing line (24) is pulled in, the spinnaker pole, carried by the spinnaker pole stop line (25), will swing beneath the headstay (2), and will be lifted to its new position on the windward side (19) of the yacht (14), terminating the jibing of the spinnaker (9). The jibing manoeuvre, according to the invention, is thus performed fast and safely, requiring one crew member only.

Description

SPINNAKER POLE AND SPINNAKER POLE HEAD
This invention consurns a spinnaker pole to be used on yachts carrying spinnaker. The spinnaker pole consists of a profile the rear end of which is fixed to the mast of the yacht by means of an inboard pole end fitting.
Such a spinnaker pole is known from US publication no. 3,228,372. In this known arrangement, the inboard pole end fitting includes sheaves for two jiibing lines. The two jibing lines run through the two sheaves via the front end of the spinnaker pole to the windward and the leeward spinnaker sheet respectively.
Duringthe jibing manouevre with this system, the topping lift is slacked to make it possible for the front end of the spinnaker pole to pass beneath the heanstay. At the same time, the windward jibing line is slacked. The leeward jibing line is now pulled in, which causes the spinnaker pole to swing beneath the headstay. When the front end of the pole has passed the headstay, the topping lift is again pulled in, and this terminates the jibing of the spinnaker.
To perform a fast and safe spinnaker jibe, two members of the crew are required. One member for handling the topping lift, and another for handling the two jibing lines. Furthermore, this system requires that the actions of these two members are co-ordinated. According to the invention, this disadvantage is eleminated. According to the invention, the spinnaker pole consists of a profile the rear end of which is fixed to the mast with an inboard pole end fitting. In front of the inboard pole end fitting, on or in the distal half of the spinnaker pole, are situated two guides for the jibing lines. Starting from the leeward and the windward spinnaker sheet respectively, the two jibing lines run via the front end of the spinnaker pole, via the guides on the pole end and the sheaves mounted on the mast above the mast mounting for the spinnaker pole to a winch or a cleat on the mast or on the deck of the yacht. On the spinaker pole, a stop line and a downhaul are mounted.
When the spinnaker is jibed, according to the invention the windward jibing line is slacked. The spinnaker pole will now fall and tighten up the spinnaker pole stop line. The spinnaker pole stop line has a fixed length, permitting the front end of the spinnaker pole to pass beneath the hesdstay. When the leeward jibing line is pulled in, the spinnaker pole, carried by the spinnaker pole stop line, will swing beneath the headstay, and will be lifted to its new position on the windward side of the yacht, terminating the jibing of the spinnaker.
Now follows a detailed description of the invention, referring to the drawings, where :
fig. 1 shows a yacht, carrying spinnaker, seen from the side. fig. 2 shows a yacht, carrying spinnaker, seen from above.
fig. 3 shows the spinnaker pole, according to US patent no. 3,228,372 seen from the side.
fig 4 shows the spinnaker pole according to the invention, seen from the side.
fig. 5 shows the spinnaker pole according to the invention,o n a yacht carrying spinnaker.
fig. 1 The rig cosists of a mast (1). The mast (1) is supported by a haedstay (2), several stays (3) and a stern stay (4). On the mast (1) is situated a mounting device (27) for fixing the inboard pole end fitting (5) of the spinnaker pole (6). The front end of the spinnaker pole
(7) is connected to the windward corne r (8) of the spinnaker (9). The top of the spinnaker (10) is connected to the mast (1) by a halyard (11). The leeward corner (12) of the spinnaker (9) is connected to the yacht (14) by the leeward spinnaker sheet (13). The windward corner
(8) of the spinnaker is connected to the yacht (14) via the front end of the spinnaker pole (7) and the windward spinnaker sheet (15). The front end of the spinnaker pole (7), is connected to the mast (1) by a top lift (16), and to the yacht (14) by a downhaul (17).
fig 2 During the jibeing manoeuvre, the yacht (14) changes direction relatively to the wind (18). Thus the windside of the yacht (1-) (the windward side (19)) becomes the leeward side (20), and the leeward side (20) becomes the windward side (19). The spinnaker pole (6) is always placed on the windward side (19) of the yacht (14). The purpose of the spinnaker pole is to hold the spinnaker (9) as far windward as possible, away from the winddead

re (21) created by the other sails in the leeward side (20) of the yacht.
fig 3 The spinnaker pole, according to US pat. 3,228,372 consists of a tube. In the rear end of the pole the inboard pole end fitting (5) is mounted. On the inboard pole end fitting (5), guides (22) for the two jibing lines (23), (24) are mounted. The jibing lines (23), (24) run via the guides (22), and via the front end (7) of the spinnaker pole to one spinnaker sheet each, the windward spinnaker sheet (15) and the leeward spinnaker sheet (13) respectively. In the front end of the spinnaker pole (7), the top lift (16) and the downhaul (17) are mounted.
fig 4 The spinnaker pole according to the invention consists of a profile. In the rear end of the pole, the inboard pole end fitting (5) is mounted. In front of the inboard pole end fitting (5) in or on the distal half of the spinnaker pole (6) guides (22) for jibing lines (23), (24) are mounted. Starting from the leeward (13) end the windward spinnaker sheet (15) respectively, the two jibing lines (23), (24) run via the front end (7) of the spinnaker pole (6), via the guides (22 ) on the pole end and the sheaves mounted on the mast (26) above the mast mounting for the spinnaker pole to a winch or a claet on the mast (1) or on the deck of the yacht (14). On the spinnaker pole, a stop line (25) and a downhaul (17) are mounted. fig 5 Spinnaker sailing according to the invention. The spinnaker pole (6) is secured to the mast (1) by the inboard pole end fitting (5). The windward corner of the spinnaker (8) is held on the front end of the spinnaker pole (7) by the windward spinnaker sheet (15) and the windward jibing line (23). The leeward corner of the spinnaker (12) is connected to the yacht by the leeward spinnaker sheet (13). The leeward jibing line is slacked, and is therefore not limiting the movements of the leeward spinnaker corner (12). The downhaul (17) is hauled taut. The stop line (25) is slack.
