Abstract

The head (1) of a golf club, such as a putter, has a shaped cavity (2) in its base (3). One of a number of shaped weights (6) may be removably located on the head (1) with the lowermost surface of the weight (6) flush with the base (3) of the head. Means for attaching the weight (6) to the head (1) may comprise a threaded bore (4) adapted to receive a threaded screw (5) holding a weight (6). The head (1) is able to be weighted differently in accordance with the weight (6) selected.

Description

TITLE: GOLF CLUB HEAD FIELD OF THE INVENTION This invention relates to improvements in golf clu heads and more particularly, but not exclusively to clu heads for putters and drivers. BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION Experienced golfers usually carry two putters havin different head weights to allow for different green speeds This is inconvenient and too costly for an average golfer similar considerations apply to driving clubs where heavier head weight may often be required. SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION It is the object of the present invention to provide a improved golf club head which avoids the above drawbacks. The invention provides a golf club head adapted fo attachment to a shaft, said head being formed with a shape cavity in its base,, a plurality of shaped weights o different masses, and means for attaching each weight i said cavity, said weights and cavity being shaped to positively locate each weight in the base of the head so that its lowermost surface is flush with the base of the head. It will appreciated from the above that by suitably shaping the cavity and the weights, a weight of different mass may be attached in the base of the head and will be positively located therein so as to not move during play. The weights are most conveniently attached in position by means of a threaded screw, although other attachment means, such as magnetic devices, may be used with equal effect. BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS One preferred embodiment of the invention will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: Figure 1 is a cross-sectional elevation of a putter head embodying the invention; Figure 2 is a cross-sectional end elevation of the putter head of Figure 1 with a heavier weight fitted thereto, and Figur e 3 is a cross-sectiona l e l e v ation o f a ty pi ca l weight . DESCRIPTION OF THE PREFERRED EMBODIMENT Referring firstly to Figure 1 of the drawings, the putter head L will be seen to comprise a central cavity 2 opening through the base 3 of the head. The head is formed with a threaded bore 4 adapted to receive a threaded screw 5 which holds a weight member 6 in position in the manner shown in Figure 1 of the drawings. It will be noted that the cavity 2 is shaped to have a stepped portion 7 within which the edges of the weight member 6 are positively located so that the lowermost surface of the weight member 6 is flush with the base of the head 1. The weight shown in Figure 1 of the drawings has the lowest mass and is used by the golfer for putting on fast greens. The weight 8 shown in Figure 2 of the drawings has the largest mass and .is used by the golfer for very heavy greens. The weight member 9 shown in Figure 3 of the drawings is of intermediate mass and is used by the golfer for slow greens. In the case of the weight members 8 and 9, they are shaped to fit --neatly in the cavity with their flange portions 10 engaging the step portions 7 in the base of the head 1 so that the lowermost surface of each weight 8 or 9 is flush with the base 3 of the club head 1. The screw 5 may be made of any suitable rust resistant material such as plastics, aluminium or stainless steel. The weight members 6, 8 and 9 are made from any suitable material to provide the required mass. In the case of the weight member 6, this may be made from suitable plastics material, the weight member 8 from a medium weight metal such as aluminium and the weight member 9 from a heavier weight metal such as stainless steel. While in the embodiment shown, the putter head has a particular shape, it will be appreciated that the invention is equally applicable to any putter head shape and is also applicable to any club head having a base portion, such as drivers.

Claims

1. A golf club head adapted for attachment to a shaft, said head being formed with a shaped cavity in its base, a plurality of shaped weights of different masses, and means for attaching each weight in said cavity, said weights and cavity being shaped to positively locate each weight in the base of the head so that its lowermost surface is flush with the base of the head. 2. The head of claim 1, wherein said cavity is found with a stepped portion adjacent the base of the head, said weights being shaped to engage said stepped portion to positively locate said weight with respect to the head. 3. The head of claim 2, wherein said weights comprise a flat light weight shaped to engage said stepped portion and to close the opening to said cavity, and at least one further heavier weight having a stepped rim which matches said stepped portion and a portion which is shaped to project into said cavity. 4. The head of claim 1, 2 or 3, wherein said cavity is formed with a threaded bore which receives a screw which removably attaches said weights to said head, said screw having a head formed with a slot for receiving a screw driver or other removal means for unscrewing said screw. 5. The head of any preceding claim, wherein said head is shaped in the form of a shark having a dorsal fin, said dorsal fin being located substantially in alignment with the correct position on the face of the club for striking a golf ball. 6. A golf club head substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to the accompanying drawings.
