Abstract

A Q-switched pulsed laser in which the Q-factor of the laser cavity is switched between a low value enabling storage of supplied energy in the cavity and a high value enabling a pulse emission of the stored energy. The cavity is filled with a mixture of iodide vapour and a buffer gas, the buffer gas being selected to minimise quenching of the excited state of the iodide vapour. The partial pressures of the iodide vapour and the buffer gas are selected to maintain the single pass small signal gain of the laser smaller than the extinction of the switching means.
