Definitions
- This invention is concerned with improvements in and relating to packing elements for use in chemical apparatus (such as distillation towers, gas-scrubbers and absorbtion apparatus) and, more especially, apparatus for the biological treatment of waste liquids or effluents, namely aerobic (trickling) sewage filters and anaerobic fermentors.
- chemical apparatus such as distillation towers, gas-scrubbers and absorbtion apparatus
- apparatus for the biological treatment of waste liquids or effluents namely aerobic (trickling) sewage filters and anaerobic fermentors.
- a packing element for use in chemical and biological treatment apparatus, comprising a plurality of open-ended tubular members symmetrically disposed about 'a central open-ended tubular member, the axes of all the tubular members being substantially parallel, and connected to the central tubular member by planar ribs r the planes of which are substantially parallel to the axes of the tubular members; each tubular member being provided with internal radial ribs extending inwardly from their walls, and adjacent tubular members in the outer array being connected one to the other by webs of generally V-shaped cross-section (as viewed along the axes of the tubular members) the apices of the V-shaped webs pointing outwardly from the central tubular member.
- the packing elements of the invention should be of low aspect ratio and thus the ⁇ aspect ratio of the packing elements (the ratio of the height of the packing element), or length of the tubular members, to the overall diameter of the packing element suitably being 0.1 : l to 0.7 : 1, preferably 0.15 : 1 to 0.66 : l r especially 0.2 : 1 to 0.6 : 1.
- adjacent ones of the outer array of tubular members are preferably also connected one to the other by planar webs, whose planes are substantially parallel to the axes of the tubular members, located at a position between the V-shaped webs and the inner tubular member.
- the packing elements of the invention may be substantially parallel sided, that is the tubular members and connecting webs may be of substantially the same depth. Alternatively, however, the tubular members and linking webs may be of different depths, i.e. so that the faces of the packing element are generally concave or convex or of an irregular configuration.
- a packing element in accordance with the invention comprises six tubular members 1 connected, via webs 2, to an inner tubular member 3 and symmetrically disposed about tubular member 3.
- Each of outer tubular members 1 has an inner diametral rib 4 coplanar with the corresponding web 2 and inner tubular member 3 has three radial ribs 5, meeting at the axes of the tubular member, effectively coplanar with alternative ones of webs 2.
- outer tubular members 1 Adjacent ones of outer tubular members 1 are connected one to the other by means of generally V-shaped webs 6 and are further connected by planar webs 7.
- the tubular members has an overall aspect ratio of about 0.2 : 1.
- the outer surface of the packing element of the invention comprises a combination of angular and arcuate surface and these serve, when a plurality of such packing elements are dumped to form a packing medium, to improve element to element interaction by preventing interlocking and hence the creation of pinch-points in the packed vessel.
- This when the packing elements are used in biological treatment apparatus, not only serves in the disengagement of biomass, since hold-up areas are thereby reduced, but also serves to provide for a plug flow mode as well as greater blockage resistance. Similar advantages obtained when the packing elements of the invention are employed in anaerobic fermentation apparatus and, indeed, in such apparatus the prevention of blocking is even more desirable since gentle substrate/bacteria contact and gas/solid disengagement is generally required.
- packing elements in accordance with the invention In order that generally even, plug-type flow may be achieved in apparatus employing packing elements in accordance with the invention it is particularly desired that the cross-sectional area of all openings in the packing element, those defined by the surfaces of the various tubular elements, the webs connecting them and the radial ribs therein should be approximately equal.
- Packing elements in accordance with the invention will be generally constructed of plastics material, such as polypropylene or polyvinyl chloride, for example by an injection moulding process.
- the invention further provides aerobic biological treatment apparatus packed with a dumped array of packing elements as defined above.
- Another aspect of the invention provides an aerobic fermentor comprising a closed vessel containing a dumped array of packing
