Description

TITLE
A HOUSING FOR AN ELECTRICAL POWER GENERATION APPARATUS
DESCRIPTION The present invention relates to a housing for an electrical power generation apparatus such as an alter¬ nator and/or a generator or the like.
FIELD OF THE INVENTION In general, engines have particular mounting require¬ ments with respect to electrical power generation apparatus to be fixed to them and is set by the particular mounting means provided. Accordingly, particular electrical power generation apparatus may be suitable to fit the mounting means of one or only a few engines. It is known to provide a mounting adaptor to allow a particular electrical power generation apparatus to be fitted to a variety of mounting means of various engines. However, such adaptors have been found to alter the physical displacement of the electrical power generation apparatus from the engine. The adaptors may result in the electrical^ power generation the engine apparatus being located further away from a drive pulley of the engine and thus require a non-original equipment drive belt. Adjustment problems may also be experienced with the location of a tensioning bracket fixed to the engine.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION The present invention provides a housing for an elec¬ trical power generation apparatus which may be fitted to various mounting means of various engines. In accordance with the present invention there is provided a housing for an electrical power generation apparatus, characterised in that the housing comprises a plurality of track means disposed at least partly along the length of the housing in a mutually parallel manner, at least one of the track means being arranged to receive along its length a bracket, the bracket being arranged to be fixed to at least one of the track means such that the position of the bracket along the housing may be adjusted so as to match a mounting means of a engine and for securement thereto.
Preferably, the housing also comprises a further track means spaced from the track means and arranged to receive a further bracket to adjustably secure the electrical power generation apparatus to a further mounting means of the engine.
The present invention will hereinafter be described with particular reference to an electrical power generation apparatus being an alternator for a vehicle engine although it is to be understood that it is of general applicability.

Figures 5 and 6 are respectively, an end elevation and a cross sectional view along line 6-6 of Figure 5 for a rear half of the housing of Figures 1 and 2 in more detail;
Figures 7, 8, 9 and 10 are views of two embodiments of a mounting bracket for the housing of Figures 1 and 2; Figures 11 and 12 are views of an adjustment bracket for use with the housing of Figures 1 and 2; and Figure 13 is an upper perspective view of an engine having the housing of Figures 1 to 6 fixed to it by the brackets of Figures 9 and 10, and 11 and 12. DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION
In Figures 1 to 6 there is shown a housing 10 for an alternator comprising a plurality of track means 12, being for example 4 track means 12. The track means 12 are disposed about the perimeter of the curved surface of the housing 10.
In the exemplary embodiment each of the track means 12 is in the form of a slot having a cross-sectional shape in the form of a "T" and disposed substantially the entire length of the housing 10. The present invention will hereinafter be described with particular reference to track means 12 being "T" slots 12 although it is to be understood that other forms of track means 12 could be used. For example, the track means 12 could be in the form of a raised rib or an open channel or the like. Each of the "T" slots 12 are intended, in use, to receive a head 14 of a bolt 16 as shown in Figure 1. The head 14 of the bolt 16 may be inserted into the "T" slot 12 from either a front end 18 or a rear end 20 of the housing and positioned continuously along the "T" slot 12 except for a break in the "T" slots 12 produced by a gap 22 (shown in Figure 2) commonly provided in alternator housings 10. Bolts 16 in the "T" slots 12 are intended to be received by mounting brackets 24 and adjustment brackets 26 as shown in Figures 1 and 7 to 12.
In Figures 7, 8, 9 and 10 there is respectively shown two embodiments of a mounting bracket 24 for use with the housing 10 of the present invention and like numerals denote like parts. Each bracket 24 comprises two flanges 28 each having a hole 30 arranged to receive one end of the bolts 16. The flanges 28 are formed at opposite ends of the bracket 24 and arranged to correspond with two adjacent "T" slots 12 of the housing 10.
Each of the brackets 24 also comprises a further hole 32 located intermediately of the flanges 28 and-intended to be conveniently bolted to a mounting means 29 of an engine 29a as shown in Figure 13. Generally, the engine mounting means 29 comprises two spaced apart apertured flanges to which the brackets 24 may be conveniently bolted.
Preferably, the brackets 25 each comprise an apertured plate 34 conveniently spot welded to the bracket about the hole 32. The plate 34 serves to reinforce the bracket 24 and acts as a wear shield therefor. The bracket 24 shown in Figures 9 and 10 further comprise webs 36 stamped into corner bends 38 of the bracket 24. The webs 36 serve to ιstrengthen the bracket 24 in the area of the corner bends 38.
The adjustment bracket 26 of Figures 11 and 12 is similar to the bracket 24 of Figures 7 and 8 and like numerals denote like parts. The adjustment bracket 26 is formed with further holes 32 and is intended to be conveniently bolted to a further mounting means 40 of the engine 29a usually in the form of an apertured or slotted tensioning arm.
Preferably, the adjustment bracket 26 is fitted to a "T" slot 12 remote from the mounting brackets 24. i has been found that, where two "T" slots 12 are employed to fix one of the brackets 24 or 26 to the housing 10, there are strength advantages in locating the "T" slots 12 at substantially right angles around the curved surface of the housing as shown in Figure 1. Such an arrangement acts to reduce the bending movement of the alternator on the ' _" slots 12 if located closer together.
It is to be understood that the angle of separation of the two "T" slots 12 could be other than right angles and similar strength advantages could be attained.
Preferably the angle of separation of two adjacent "T" slots 12 having a bracket 24 or 26 between them is greater than about 30° and less than about 270° and more preferable between 45° and 135° such as 90°. It is envisaged that other than two "T" slots 12 could be used to fix each of the brackets 24 and 26 to the housing 10, such as, for example, one or three "T" slots 12. It has been found advantageous to provide the housing with 4 "T" slots 12 disposed equally about the curved surface and with the brackets 24 and 26 mounted between separate pairs of the "T" slots 12. Preferably, as shown in Figures 1, 3 and 5 the "T" slots 12 are formed in the housing 12 adjacent regions where the housing 12 is thicker, such as adjacent fixing bolts 50.
In use, the housing 10 of the present invention is employed for an alternator or the like to fix the alternator as a replacement part or as an original part to various engines having various provisions for mounting alternators. The housing may be fitted to the engine 29a as described hereinafter, whilst maintaining the original alignment of a pulley 52 of the alternator with the drive pulley 54 of the engine 29a, maintaining the alternator so as to allow use of the original equipment drive belt 56, and maintaining the original equipment mounting flanges 29 and tensioning arm 40. To fit the housing 10 to the engine 29a, the "heads 14 of 4 of the bolts 16, are two each, loosely fixed into the holes 30 of two brackets 24 and then slid into two adjacent "T" slots 12. The distance apart of the two brackets 24 and their position along the "T" slots 12 are then simultaneously adjusted so that they may be conveniently bolted to the mounting flanges 29 of the engine 29a and so that the alternator pulley 52 is in alignment with the drive pulley 54. Then the adjustment bracket 26 is similarly located between two other "T" slots 12 and positioned therealong so as to have the tensioning arm 40 conveniently bolted to it. In such manner the alternator housing 10 of the present invention may be used to allow an alternator to readily be fitted to a variety of engines having a variety of mounting means without the inconvenience of having to use non-original equipment drive belts. Further, the housing 10 of the present invention generally overcomes the problem of fitting a replacement alternator into a confined space, which problem plagues other types of replacement -alternator housings. Modifications and variations such as would be apparent to a skilled addressee are deemed within the scope of the present invention.
