Abstract

An apparatus for moving the impeller (2) of a pump axially, in which apparatus the impeller is fastened with threads. In the shaft sleeve (8) there is a lug (12) which fits to a notch (13) in the hub of the impeller. Since the impeller and the shaft sleeve are connected to each other in this way, the impeller rotates at the same time when the shaft sleeve is rotated thus changing the clearances (A, B) between the front and the back surface of the impeller and the corresponding surfaces in the pump casing (1).

Description

Apparatus for moving the impeller of a pump axially
The present invention relates to an apparatus for the axial moving of the impeller of a pump. The apparatus comprises an impeller fastened with threads to a shaft which is rotatably mounted on bearings provided outside the pump casing and equipped with a shaft sleeve which is pressed against the hub with clasp nuts.
In centrifugal pumps there must be a certain clearance between the front and/or back surface of the impeller and the corresponding surfaces of the pump casing. Due to the wearing of the surfaces the clearance widens during the use and therefore has to be adjusted from time to time, which is usually done by moving the impeller into, the direction desired. The moving has to be done while the pump is assembled, because disassembling of the pump requires a great' amount of work. Usually the impeller is moved axially by a mechanism connected with the bearings which moves the shaft of the pump and at the same time the impeller. The construction mentioned above is, however, relatively complicated.
The object of the invention is to create a simple mechanism for the axial transfer of the impeller.
The apparatus of the invention is characterized in that there is a lug in the shaft sleeve which fits to a notch in the hub of the impeller or vice versa.
The invention is described further below with reference to the accompanying drawing illustrating in vertical section a centrifugal pump in which the invention has been applied.
In the figure there is a pump casing 1 with an impeller 2. The impeller is fastened to a shaft 4 with inner threads in its hub 3 and outer threads in the end 5 of the shaft. The shaft is mounted rotatably on bearings 6 and 7 provided outside the pump casing. A shaft sleeve 8 is disposed on the shaft and pressed tightly against the end surface of the hub with a nut 9. The nut has the opposite thread from the impeller. There are notches 10 and 11 on the shaft sleeve side and on the rim of the nut so that the nut can be rotated with a pin spanner. A lug 12 is situated on the end of the shaft sleeve by the impeller 'and it fits to the notch 13 in the hub of the impeller. The shaft sleeve can, of course, have several lugs and the hub several notches. The lugs can be situated in the hub and the notches on the shaft sleeve, too. The clearance between the front surface of the impeller and the corresponding surface in the casing is marked with A. The clearance between the back surface of the impeller and the corresponding surface in the casing is marked with B.
The impeller is moved axially as follows:
1. The nut 9 is unscrewed which means that the threaded joint between the impeller 2 and the shaft 4 slackens, too.
2. The shaft sleeve 8 is rotated in the direction desired and the impeller 2 rotates similarly and at the same time moves axially. The rotation of the shaft 4 along with the shaft sleeve must be prevented.
3. when the clearance A or B (depending on the structure of the pump) is reached, the nut 9 is tightened up against the shaft sleeve 8 and at the same time the threaded joint between the impeller 2 and the shaft 4 tightens up.
Following advantages are gained with the solution of the present invention compared to prior art structures: - manufacturing costs are smaller, because the structure is simpler and the components fewer.
- manufacturing errors in the bearings system are fewer, because there is no sliding sleeve between the bearings and the bearing supports.
The invention is not limited to the embodiments presented here, but it can be applied within the scope of protection defined by the appended patent claims. So, the impeller and the shaft sleeve can be connected to each other also in other ways so that when the shaft sleeve is rotated, the impeller rotates simultaneously with e.g a slot joint.
