Abstract
A game based on the game of chess in which the board (B) or playing surface comprises two arrays of squares four by ten superimposed on each other at right angles to form a cross having four quadrants (1, 2, 3, 4) each containing an array of squares four by three, the playing pieces for each player being adapted to be arranged for the commencement of a game in the first two rows of two adjacent quadrants, the king and queen being adapted to be arranged on squares of similar colour at adjacent corners of said quadrants, the sets of four pawns in each quadrant being adapted to be separately identifiable for at least the duration of the game and being required to move to the directly opposite side of the board to achieve upgrading, all bishops being confied to movement diagonally on squares of the same colour, and castling being allowed only in the king's quadrant, the rules otherwise being as for a conventional chess game except for variations imposed by the board configuration.
Description
TITLE: GAME Field of the Invention This invention relates to a game based on the game of chess. Background of the Invention The game of chess has been extremely popular for centuries and it is the object of the present invention to provide a game which is based on the game of chess but in which the board is modified and the rules slightly modified to enable the game to be played on the modified board. Summary of the Invention The invention provides a game based on the game of chess in which the board or playing surface comprises two arrays of squares four by ten superimposed on each other at right angles to form a cross having four quadrients each containing an array of squares four by three the playing pieces for each player being adapted to be arranged for the commencement of a game in the first two rows of two adjacent quadrants, the king and queen adapted to be being arranged on squares of similar colour at adjacent corners of said quadrants, the sets of four pawns in each quadrant being adapted to be separately identifiable for at least the duration of the game and being required to move to the directly opposite side of the board to achieve upgrading, all bishops being confined to movement diagonally on squares of the same colour, and castling being allowed only in the king's quadrant, the rules otherwise being as for a conventional chess game except for variations imposed by the different board design. Brief Description of the Drawings A preferred embodiment will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: Figure 1 is a plan view of a game board on which the game embodying the invention is to be played, and Figures 2, 3 and 4 are plan views of alternative game board designs. The presently preferred form of a game board B is shown in Figure 1 of the accompanying drawings and will be seen to
comprise two rectangular arrays of squares arranged in a cross to define four quadrants, two quadrants 1 and 2 having the usual chess playing pieces arranged, in the manner indicated on the board, for one player (player A), and the other two quadrants 3 and 4 having similar pieces similarly arranged for the other player (player B). Four pawns are arranged in the second row of each quadrant and each such set of pawns is separately identifiable for the duration of the game to ensure that the pawns in one quadrant, for example quadrant 1, must move directly across the board to quadrant 4 in order to achieve upgrading. Identification of the pawns may be by suitable marking of the pawns either during manufacture or by applying a removable marker to a set of standard pawns which may then be subsequently used in a standard chess game. It will be noted that in the arrangement shown, the king and queen of each player are arranged on white squares at adjacent corners of the respective pairs of quadrants. Similarly the bishops are arranged on black squares and are confined to move diagonally only on black squares. Similarly, all knights start on white squares and all rooks start on black squares. It will be appreciated that this arrangement may be inverted so that the kings and queens commence on black squares with consequential changes being made to the positioning of the other pieces. "Castling" is allowed only in the king's quadrant. With the exception of the above described modifications to the normal rules for the game of chess, the game is played by fol lowing the normal chess rules with consequential modifications caused by the different board configuration. For example, pawns may only move forward to advance and diagonally to capture an opponent's piece, the diagonal direction being relative to the basic direction of travel of that particular set of pawns. A game finishes when "checkmate" is achieved or when a "stalemate" occurs. The rules of play may be printed on the game board for convenience and may be summarised as follows: RULES
Claims
1. Ai m an d ba sic mo v e s o f game ar e a s f or conventional chess. 2. All bishops are confined to black squares for entire game. 3. "King's pawns" are larger than "Queen's pawns". All pawns move forward only relative to starting position and take opposing pieces diagonally relative to line of advance. 4. Pawns must reach far side of board to be replaced by any other piece. 5. King may "castle" only with king's rook. It wil l be appreciated that by virtue of the restrictions imposed by the modified board configuration, the game is sufficiently different to the standard game of chess to constitute at least an interesting diversion for both inexperienced and experienced chess players.
1. A game based on the game of chess in which the board (B) or playing surface comprises two arrays of squares four by ten superimposed on each other at right angles to form a cross having four quadrants (1,2,3,4) each containing an array of squares four by three, the playing pieces for each player being adapted to be arranged for the commencement of a game in the first two rows of two adjacent quadrants, the king and queen being adapted to be arranged on squares of similar colour at adjacent corners of said quadrants, the sets of four pawns in each quadrant being adapted to be separately identifiable for at least the duration of the game and being required to move to the directly opposite side of the board to achieve upgrading, all bishops being confined to movement diagonally on squares of the same colour, and castling being allowed only in the king's quadrant, the rules otherwise being as for a conventional chess game except for variations imposed by the board configuration.
2. The game of c laim 1 , wherein the separate identification of the two sets of pawns of each player is achieved by suitable marking of each pawn during manufacture or by the suitable marking of a set of standard pawns.
3. The game of claim 1 or 2, in combination with a set of chess pieces of standard or special design in which two halves of each set of pawns are separately identified.
