Definitions

  • a Restrictor Device for the Opening Movement of a Pivotal Window Sash is provided.
  • This invention relates to a restrictor device for the opening movement of a pivotal window sash and of the type comprising a guide slit element to be mounted in a side member of the main frame or the sash of the window, and a coupling link which by a pin at a first end there ⁇ of pivotally and displaceably engages the guide slit of the element while its other end is adapted to be pivo ⁇ tally mounted in the corresponding sash or frame member.
  • the limiting effect is due to the fact that the pivot and displacement pin of the coupling link abuts against the lower end of the guide slit, but it is also known to arrest the window sash in one or more intermediate positions, e.g.
  • the guide slit element may comprise a stop or a ratchet urged against a blocking position in the guide slit by a spring or by gravitation, and which by direct or indirect manipula ⁇ tion, for instance via a press button, may be brought into an inoperative position to cancel the arresting effect.
  • the present invention relates to a restrictor device capable of fulfilling the same purpose inspite of a simpler structure.
  • the particular characteristics of said restrictor device are that the guide slit comprises at least two consecutive sections having mutually decreasing width reckoned in the direction of displacement of the pin upon opening of the window sash, and that the pin com- prises successive portions the diameters of which cor ⁇ respond to a respective one of said sections and decrease relative to each other in the direction away from the coupling link, the end of the coupling link provided with the pin being biassed in the direction towards the guide slit element.
  • the simplification in comparison with the prior devices provided with an arresting mechanism consists in that no movable ratchet or similar stop is required which would not only make the structure more expensive, but whose function may further be impeded or even completely prevented by wrong manipulation or due to penetrating dirt.
  • the operation is caused by the fact that the portion of the pivot and displacement pin of the coupling link having the largest diameter by the movement of the sash from its closed position is caught at the transition from the first guide slit section to the following narrower section, thereby excluding an immediate continuation of the opening movement.
  • the pin By overcoming the biassing force the pin may, however, be brought into such a position that its successive thinner portion will be located in the slit and since said pin portion may slide along the second or the following narrower guide slit section, the sash may now be further opened. Incidentally, this re- quires a certain manipulation that a child can scarcely effect, in particular if restrictor devices are mounted on both sides of the window and require simultaneous manipulation.
  • Fig. 1 is a vertical sectional view of a bottom- hinged wall window, the sash being shown in full lines in its closed position while its arresting and fully open positions are indicated in dot-and-dash lines and dotted lines, resp.
  • Fig. 2 is a section on a larger scale along the line II-II in Fig. 1 showing the restrictor device separately.
  • the illustrated window comprises a main frame 1 with a bottom member 2, a top member 3 and a side member 4, and a sash 5 with associated members 6, 7 and 8 of which the side member 8 is however only illustrated fragmentarily.
  • a metal plate 9 with a guide slit composed of a short upper section 10 and a longer and narrower lower section 11 with a local swelling 12 is fitted into the main frame side member 4 and secured thereto by screws.
  • the plate 9 is provided with a backing piece 13 which by an inter- mediate member 13' is spaced from the plate 9.
  • the window sash 5 is pivotal in a lower, horizon ⁇ tal hinge 14 and is through a pin 15 connected with the lower end of a coupling link 16 fully illustrated in the dotted position of the sash while in the two other posi- tions it is only represented by its longitudinal axis.
  • the coupling link 16 is provided with a pin 17 which in a pivotal and displaceable manner enga ⁇ ges the guide slit 10, 11 and whose shape appears from Fig. 2.
  • the pin 17 closest to the coupling link 16 has a portion 18 with an axial length that is a little larger than the thickness of the fix ⁇ ture plate 9, and then a portion 19 having a similar length but a smaller diameter, and finally a head 20 whose diameter is a little larger than the diameter of the first portion 18 and smaller than the largest width of the slit section 11 at its swelling 12.
  • the thickness of the head 20 corresponds to the distance between the backing piece 13 and the reverse side of the fixture plate 9.
  • the diameter of the pin portions 18 and 19 corresponds to the width of the slit section 10 and the slit section 11, respectively.
  • the end of the coupling link 16 with the pin 7 is biassed towards the fixture plate 9. Said biassing effect may be easily ensured in that the coupling link in the mounting posi ⁇ tion is resiliently deformed so that it curves a little or from a slightly curved, unbiassed position is resi- liently deformed to straight shape as supposed in Fig. 2.
  • the portion 18 of the pin 17 is located at the upper end of the slit section 10 from which it by initiating opening of the window is displaced downwards till it is stopped at the transition to the narrower slit section 11, thereby arresting the sash 5 in the position shown in dot-and- dash lines. If it is desired to open the window further the arresting effect may be cancelled in that the coupling link 16 by overcoming the biassing force is manually pulled in the direction away from the fixture plate 9 until the head of the pin 17 abuts against the reverse side of said plate. In this position the portion 20 with reduced diameter of the pin 17 is received in the slit section 11 and may thus pass downwards there ⁇ through until it is stopped at the lowermost end of the slit, the sash then occupying the dotted position.
  • the biassing force on the coupling link 16 is normally effective, thereby retaining the collar surface at the transition between said two pin portions 18 and 19 in engagement against the front surface of the fixture plate, but another possibility is to make the pin head 20 slide on a corresponding guide surface either in the fixture itself or in the main frame recess into which the fixture plate is fitted.
  • the pin portion 18 shall again fall into the relatively wide slit section 10. Therefore, the annular face of said portion should not remain hanging on the front surface of the plate 9, and for this reason the edge of the slit section 10 may be provided with a chamfer as indicated by 10', and also the edge of the pin portion 18 may be chamfered or rounded.
  • the recess section 11 comprises a local swelling 12 allowing unhooking of the coupling link 16 from its fixture plate 9.
  • the stress or the bias force on the coupling link 16 may effect an unintended arresting, viz. in that the pin portion 18 slips into the enlarged portion of the slit.
  • the backing piece 13 serves to avoid this as it acts as a stop for the free end surface on the head of the pin 20. In other words, the backing piece con ⁇ stitutes a local guide surface as mentioned above.
  • iden ⁇ tical fixtures may be used for both right and left side of the window and the same applies if the backing piece 13 is detachable and can be mounted arbitrarily on one or the other side of the fixture plate 9.
  • the restrictor device may also be applied to other types of windows, for instance tiltable windows having a horizontal central axis and top-hinged windows and that its guide slit element 9 may be adapted to be mounted in the sash 5 instead of in the main frame 1, while the coupling link is then supported by the main frame side member 4.
  • the restric ⁇ tor device may be mounted on horizontal main frame and sash members and in this latter case gravitation may be utilized to effect the mentioned bias force.
