Abstract

The device comprises a first grinding member (1) for grinding in the mass the flutes (2) of a drill (3) and a second grinding member (4) for grinding in the mass the back of said flutes. The two grinding member (1, 4) operate simultaneously and are adjustable independently as to there angles, positions and centerings. Owing to this arrangement, the adjustment times are reduced by 80% and the production times by 2/3. The machining precision is increased in comparison to known devices.

Description

The present invention relates to a device for machining cutting tools made of hard metal or steel, comprising a first grinding wheel for straightening a flute in the solid and a second grinding wheel for straightening the back of the flute.
In known machines for machining cutting tools such as bits, centering bits, reamers, end mills, circular milling cutters, etc., the flute is first cut and ground with a first wheel, then a second wheel is used to correct the back of said flute. For each flute and its back, it is therefore necessary to make two passes, which causes time-outs to adjust the grindstones.
The object of the present invention is to remedy these drawbacks and to reduce, on the one hand, the adjustment time by approximately 80% and, on the other hand, the machining time by 2/3. This object is achieved by the device according to the invention which is characterized in that the two grinding wheels are driven separately but act simultaneously in a single pass.
The accompanying drawing shows, by way of example, an embodiment of the device which is the subject of the invention. Fig. 1 is a schematic view of the grinding wheels in the axis of the workpiece, in this case a drill bit, and FIG. 2 is a plan view of the grinding wheels and the drill bit, the grinding wheel of the back of the flute being shown parallel to the grinding wheel in the full of the flute to simplify the drawing, the arrows indicating the movements that the grinding wheels are likely to perform.
The device shown shows the machining of the helical grooves and the adjustment of a bit. This device comprises a first grinding wheel 1 making it possible to straighten the flutes 2 of the drill bit 3 in full. This grinding wheel 1 is mounted on a carriage (not shown) capable of being moved in three planes perpendicular to each other and makes an angle determined from the pitch of the wick 3 with the horizontal axis of said wick which moves along its longitudinal axis (fig. 1 and 2). To perform the rectification of the back of the flute, in this case the recalibration, a second grinding wheel 4 is provided. In FIG. 2, this grinding wheel has been shown parallel to the grinding wheel 1 to simplify the drawing but, in reality, its axis is inclined by an angle α adjustable relative to the horizontal plane (fig. 1). The grinding wheel 4 is movable in height and in two planes which intersect at right angles. Grinding wheels 1 and 4 are driven separately but work at the same time. Thanks to this simultaneous machining, the production time is reduced. two thirds compared to the machines which work as indicated in the preamble. Furthermore, the machining precision is increased, since the settings are deleted.
The drive and advance of the drill bit 3 as well as the variations in the positions of the two grinding wheels 1, 4 are controlled by known copying devices and synchronized with the feed, so that the grinding wheels are brought automatically into the adequate position on the workpiece.
