Abstract
An elastically operating supplementary or auxiliary means for door-handles (11) and the like, which is intended as a supplement to a return spring which conventionally is provided in a lock-box (13) for actuating a rower or a corresponding movement transmitting means in a manner known per se to hereby return the handle (11), which is secured to a non-round spindle (8) passing through the lock-box (13), to its horizontal, undepressed position, is designed as a loose, individual unit. The auxiliary return means comprises an annular casing, which is attachable in a door (10) outside the lock-box (13) to the door and/or to the latch-box. The casing contains firstly a driver (5) which is rotatable with respect to the casing and has a non-round aperture (7), through which the return means may be threaded upon the turning spindle, and secondly at least one spring (9) or a similar elastical means which is tightened through the rotation of the spindle and the driver (5).

Elastically operating auxiliary return means for doorhandles and the like
This invention relates to an elastically operating auxiliary return means for doorhandles and the like of the kind set forth in the introductory portion of claim 1.
The auxiliary or supplementary device according to the invention is intended as a supplement to the ordinary return spring which is located in the lock box or in a corresponding space and actuates the so called "rower" or movement transmitting member in a known manner. This spring has a tendency of becoming exhausted or weakened (slacked) with time so that the handle, particularly when heavier, e.g. cast or forged handles for outer doors are concerned, has a tendency of sloping or tilting downwards in a less attractive way, after a longer or shorter period of use.
The principal object of the invention resides in pro¬ viding an elastically operating return means which in co¬ operation with the above-mentioned ordinary spring positi- vely returns the handle to its un-actuated (ordinarily horisontal) position year by year. This object is attained thanks to the fact that the return means is so designed as is set forth in the characterizing clause of claim 1. As is evident therefrom the auxiliary device according to the invention may on one hand be utilized for substantially any handles and on the other hand be replaced by a fault¬ less device if against presupposition it should happen to become defective.
Further features and advantages of the device accor- ding to the invention will become apparent from the follo¬ wing detailed description and the annexed drawings which diagrammatically and as a non-limiting example illustrate a preferred embodiment of the invention.
Fig. 1 is a side elevational view of an auxiliary device according to the invention and has a casing which consists of two halves.
Fig. 2 is a plan view of the auxiliary device with one of the casing halves removed.
Fig. 3 is a plan view, which illustrates partly in a horizontal section how the device according to the in¬ vention is constructed and intended to be positioned in a door for cooperation with a handle and a latch.
The auxiliary device which is generally designated 1 comprises a housing or casing which is most clearly shown in Fig. 1 and which is comprised of two similar parts or halves 2a, 2b in' the illustrated embodiment. Each part 2a, 2b has a central opening 3a and 3b, respec- tively, which are coaxial with each other, and a pair of preferably diametrically opposed apertures for tubular • rivets 4 by means of which the two parts of the casing ar held together. The casing 2a, 2b contains a dog or driver 5 which is turnable together with a hub member 6 which is rotatably journalled in the central, coaxial openings 3a, 3b and has a through, non-round (square) aperture 7 for a turning spindle 8 (fig. 3). As is most clearly shown in Fig. 2 the driver 5 comprises a central, annular portion and two diametrically opposed ends projecting therefrom. in each of the two arcshaped spaces which are defined by one end of the driver 5, part of the cylindrical circum¬ ferential wall of the casing 2a, 2b, one of the tubular rivets 4 and one half of the central, annular portion of the driver 5, a helical compression spring 9 is inserted. it is evident that the springs are compressed (tightened) when the driver 5 is rotated coun±.er clockwise in Fig. 2.
In Fig. 3 the auxiliary or supplementary device according to the invention is illustrated as mounted in its place in a door 10 and cooperating with a door handle which is generally designated 11. In the front edge of the door which is opposite to the hinges there is provided_i.n,

a manner known per se a cavity for a diagrammatically illustrated lock box 13 having a latch 14 operated by the handle 11. With regard hereto the lock box 13 comprises a hub member 15 which is connected to the latch 14 by means of a movement transferring member in the shape of a rower (not shown) . Between the cavity 12 and the out¬ side of the door 10 (which faces the handle in Fig. 3) there is provided an opening 17 which is sufficiently large to accomodate the auxiliary device 1 inserted therein. Between the cavity 12 and the inside of the door 10 there extend two bores 18 for studs 19, which are each provided with a threaded dead end bore 20 and are made integral with and project from an inner cover disc 21 having a central opening through which the turning spindle 8 passes idly.
The opening 17 is covered by an outer cover disc 23 which is mounted on the spindle 8 in such a way that it can rotate in relation to the handle 11 and the spindle 8 but cannot be substantially displaced axially with respect to the spindle 8. The outer cover disc 23 has a pair of through apertures 24 which are coaxial with the tubular rivets 4, corresponding, through apertures (not shown) in the lock box 13, and the threaded dead end bores 20 in the studs 19 of the inner cover disc 21. The disc 23 and accordingly also the handle 11 and the auxiliary device 1 are secured in their respective positions shown in Fig. 3 by means of screws (not shown) which pass through the apertures 24, the tubular rivets 4, and the lock box 13 and are screwed into the bores 20.
It is evident that the springs 9 of the auxiliary device 1 become compressed when the turning spindle 8 is rotated by the depressing or turning of the handles 11. Similarly it is evident that the springs 9 tend to return to their less compressed initial condition and to reset the handle 11 to its starting position when the handle 11 is released.
The embodiment described above and illustrated in the drawing is, of course, to be regarded merely as a non-limi ting example and may as to its details be modified in several ways within the scope of the following claims. 5 Thus for instance the number of springs may be smaller or greater than two, e.g. one or four, which, of course, presupposes a suitable modification of the design of the driver 5 and/or the number of tubular rivets 4. Further¬ more, said compression springs may be replaced by a
■ j_g planar coil spring or by one or more traction springs which are anchored in the driver 5 and in at least one of the tubular rivets 4. Finally the casing may be composed of a bowl-shape part having a cylindrical circumferential surface and a suitably planar bottom plus a substantially
• j_5 planar cover which fits the circumferential surface, instead of the two equal halves 2a, 2b."

Claims
1) Elastically operating auxiliary return means for such door-handles and the like as are attachable to a non-round turning spindle (8), which passes through a lock box (13) or the like, and together with the spindle are rotatable with respect to the lock box, said return means, which has the shape of a loose, individual unit and comprises an annular casing (2a, 2b) which contains firstly at least one driver (5), which is rotatable with respect to the casing (2a, 2b) and has a non-round aperture (7) of a shape corresponding to the cross section of the non-round turning spindle (8) and through which the return means is threadable upon the turning spindle, and secondly at least one spring (9) or a similar elastical means, which is adapted to be tightened through the rotation of the spind¬ le and the driver (5) , being located in a recess (17), which is substantially co-axial with the lock box aperture for the non-round turning spindle (8) and is provided in a door portion (10) located on one side of the lock box, and covered by a disc or the like (23), which is associated with the handle (11) and is substantially co-axial with the turning spindle and also covers the recess, c h a ¬ r a c t e r i z e d in that the casing comprises two annular parts (2a, 2b) , which are held together by means of at least one tubular rivet (4) or the like, which con¬ stitutes an abutment or attachment for said elastic means (9) , and in that the return means is substantially non- rotatably secured to the door (10) by means of at least one. screw or the like which passes through the disc (23) , the tubular rivet (4) of the return means, and the lock box (13) or the like, said screw being secured to a door portion located on the opposite side of the lock box in respect of said disc or to a disc or the like (21) provi¬ ded on said latter door portion.
