Description
IMPROVEMENTS RELATING TO OPEN-END SPINNING MACHINES
This invention relates to apparatus for open-end spinning of yarn and particularly to apparatus for friction spinning.
Various apparatuses of this kind have been disclosed in patent specifications by Barmag Barmer fflaschinenfabrik AG and Or. Ernst Fahrer including a hollow drum at least a portion of the peripheral surface of which is perforated to provide a yarn formation surface, a fibre feed duct for conveying fibres onto the surface, a duct member extending into the drum and provided uiith a slot for communicating suction from a source outside the drum through the slot to the perforated portion of the surface, means mounting the drum such that it can rotate about its axis to twist fibres deposited on the peripheral surface to form a yarn and means for withdrawing the yarn transversely to the direction of motion of the surface.
In none of the disclosures has attention been given to the manner in uihich the parts can be mounted to effectively and reliably provide the specific small clearances between the parts uihich are essential in a commercial machine.
Accordingly the invention is characterized in that the mounting means includes a bearing for the drum uihich is rigidly carried by the duct member.
The invention is illustrated by may of example in the accompanying drawings in which Figure 1 is a sectional plan vieui of an open-end spinning apparatus according to the invention; and Figure 2 is a section along the line II-II in Figure 1.
Attention is firstly directed to our published British Patent Application No. 2 042 599 mhich discloses in detail an apparatus of this kind. The following description mill only include those parts which are concerned ujith the present invention.
The apparatus comprises a pair of parallel, closely spaced drums 1
and 2. The surface of the drum 1 includes a portion which is perforated
The drum 1 comprises the perforated cylindrical portion 3 and imperforate extensions 11 and 12 which act to give support and rigidity to the portion 3. Within the drum 1 is mounted a suction duct member comprising a tube 13 which comprises an elongate cylinder coaxial with the drum and forming a small clearance, of the order of 1 or 2 thousands of an inch, with the drum such that the drum is free to rotate about the tube 13. The tube 13 includes a slot 14 adjacent the throat between the drums 1 and 2 to communicate suction within the tube 13 to the peripheral surface of the drum 1 and thus tα the throat.
The tube 13 is rigidly mounted at one end by insertion within a bore 15 formed in a support 15a of the duct member which is fixed to a machine frame 16 against which the end of the tube 13 abuts. The bore 15 is opened out to form a cylindrical cavity 17 and a flange 17a which surrounds one end of the perforated drum 1 so as to provide a housing for a bearing 18 which rotatably supports the end of the perforated drum 1 externally thereof.
The other end of the tube 13 is closed and reduced or recessed in cross-section to provide a boss 19 on the outer peripheral surface of which is supported a bearing 20 for rotatably supporting the inner surface of an imperforate, reduced diameter or recessed portion 21 at the end of the drum 1. The boss 19 includes an extended portion which is rigidly mounted in a machine frame member 57. The interior of the tube 13 communicates with a source of suction 22 which comprises a duct extending through the machine frame 16.
This arrangement wherein the duct 13 is rigidly mounted on the frame members of the machine and carries the bearing ensures that the clearances
between the drum 1 and the duct 13 can be acurately set in manufacture and can be maintained for the life of the machine. Additionally the mounting is simple and allows the use of standard bearings while providing the required access of the yarn withdrawal duct to a position immediately adjacent the surface of the drum 1. The rotation of the drums 1 and 2 is such that the periphery of drum 2 moves out of the throat towards the side adjacent to the fibre feed duct 41 and the peripheral surface of the drum 1 provided with the perforated portion 3 moves from the side adjacent the fibre feed duct 41 into the throat.
A fibre feed apparatus is generally indicated at 34. This type of fibre feed apparatus is well known in open-end spinning systems of the spinning rotor type and an example is described in more detail in British Patent No. 1 368 886. The fibres are conveyed from the fibre feed apparatus 34 to the throat formed between the peripheral surfaces of the drums 1, 2 within the fibre feed duct 41. The throat forms a yarn formation zone in which the fibres are twisted by rotation of the drums 1, 2 into a yarn 'Y' which is withdrawn axially of the drums 1, 2 along the throat by a pair of delivery rollers 55, located on the opposite side of the fibre feed duct 41 to that of the suction duct 22, through a yarn withdrawal tube 56 and wound into a package 55a.
