Abstract

A glove, especially a working glove, intended to protect the hand at different types of work. A working glove shall constitute an effective protection for the hand providing that at least the palm portion of the glove has to be manufactured from a relatively heavy material. This involves that the hand covered by the glove gets a relatively restricted sensitivity which is a substantial drawback in several types of work. This restricted sensitivity of a hand covered by a working glove can be eliminated to a substantial degree by forming the material of the glove so that the material closely connects with the shape of the palm. In the glove according to the invention there has been provided a better connection of the material of the glove with the shape of the palm by the fact that the seam (24, 84) which connects a palm thumb portion (80) of the glove with the rest of the palm portion (6) of the glove is positioned so that it extends substantially between the thenar muscle and the rest of the palm with the palm thumb portion substantially covering the thenar muscle at the palm side of the hand and that the edge (84) of the palm thumb portion (80) has greater length than the edge (24) of the restof the palm portion (6) before said edges are connected with each other by means of said seam.

Description

Glove, especially a working glove.
The present invention relates to a glove, especially a working glove, intended to protect the hand at different types of work.
A working glove shall of course constitute an effective protection for the hand, which involves that at least the palm of the glove has to be manufactured from a relatively heavy material. However, this fact provides that the hand, which is covered by the glove, gets a restricted sensitivity, which is a substantial drawback in many types of work. However, the restricted sensitivity of a hand covered by a working glove can be eliminated to a substantial degree by providing a glove, the material of which closely connects with the shape of the palm. In such a close connection between the material of the glove and the palm the hand becomes a rather good sensitivity also when the material of the glove, which forms the palm portion thereof, is relatively thick and rigid in order to be able to protect the hand in an effective way.
However, previously known gloves offer a rather bad connection between the palm portion of the glove and the palm, which is caused by the substantial difficulties in providing the palm portion of the glove with a shape which connects with the palm, especially in the area of the irregular shape of the thenar muscle.
Therefore, the object of the present invention is to provide a glove, especially a working glove, the palm portion of which is of a shape which closely connects with the palm, especially with regard to the connection in the area of the thenar muscle.
In order to comply with this object the glove comprises a rear portion and a palm portion, the rear portion comprising a rear thumb portion and the palm portion comprising a palm thumb portion, which is connected with the rest of the palm portion by means of a seam, and the glove according to the invention is characterized in that the seam connecting the palm thumb portion with the rest of the palm portion is positioned so as to extend between the thenar muscle and the central part of the palm, the palm thumb portion substantially covering the thenar muscle, and that the edge of the palm thumb portion before it is connected with the edge of the rest of the palm portion by means of said seam is of greater length than the last mentioned edge.
By means of this design of the palm portion there is provided a glove which closely connects with the palm and the thenar muscle without the forming of creases in the area of the palm existing at previously known gloves and substantially reducing the sensitivity of the hand covered with such a glove.
In a preferred embodiment of the invention the rear thumb portion is formed in one piece with the rest of the rear portion of the glove.
It is also preferred that the palm portion and the rear portion of the glove comprise finger portions which by means of seams are connec ted with the rest of the palm portion and the rear portion and that the finger portions have greater length at the rear portion than at the palm portion. Thereby, there is provided a glove which well adapt to the rest position of the hand, in which the fingers are of a somewhat curved shape.
An embodiment of the invention is described in the following with reference to the accompanying drawings in which:

Figs, la - If show a number of glove blanks which are intended to be stitched together in order to form an embodiment of a glove according to the invention. Fig. la" shows a glove portion com¬ prising a rear portion 2 having a rear thumb portion 4 and a palm portion 5 but having no finger portions and no palm thumb portion. A broken line 8 indicates the dividing line between the rear portion and the palm portion of the glove. In addition thereto the rear portion is limited by an upper edge 10, a lower edge 12, a side edge 14 and an edge 16 of the rear thumb portion 4, and the palm portion is limited by an upper edge 18, a lower edge 20, a side edge 22 and a side edge 24 which is shown by means of broader lines.
The little finger portion 25 shown in Fig. lb is limited by side edges 28 and 30 and end edges 32, 34 and 36. The ring finger portion 38 shown in Fig. lc is limited by side edges 40 and 42 and end edges 44, 46, 48 and 50. _ The middle finger 52 shown in Fig. Id is limited by side edges 54 and 56 and end edges 58, 60, 62 and 64. The index finger portion 66 shown in Fig. le is limited by side edges 68 and 70 and end edges 72, 74, 76 and 78. The palm thumb portion 80 shown in Fig. If is limited by a lower edge 82, a side edge 84 shown in broader lines and an edge 86.
In manufacturing a glove according to the invention it is preferred first to stitch the finger portions to each other, the finger portions having thereby preferably approximately the positions shown in Figs, lb - d. The little finger portion 26 is stitched to the ring finger portion 38 along the edges 34 and 50, respectively, the ring finger portion 38 is stitched to the middle finger portion 52 along the edges 46 and 64, respectively, and the middle finger portion 52 is stitched to the index finger portion 66 along the edges 60 and 76, respectively. Thereupon, the finger portions are stitched together
~~~~____ along its side edges, so that the side edge 28 is stitched to the side edge 30 of the little finger portion 26, the side edge 40 is stitched to the side edge 42 of the ring finger portion 38, the side edge 54 is stitched to the side edge 56 of the middle finger portion 52 and the side edge 68 is stitched to the side edge 70 of the index finger portion 66. Thereafter, the finger portions are turned inside out, so that the seams will be positioned inside the finger portions.
Subsequently the side edge 22 of the palm portion is stitched to the side edge 14 of the rear portion of the glove, whereby the upper edge 18 of the palm portion 6 will be positioned opposite to the upper edge 10 of the rear portion 2 and the lower edge 20 of the palm portion 6 will be positioned opposite to the lower edge 12 of the rear portion. After that the rear portion 2 and the palm portion 6 of the glove have the position shown in Fig. 2a.
The finger portions 26, 38, 52 and 66 which are now stitched together form a continuous edge constituted by the edges 32, 44, 58 and 72 of the finger portions and intended to be stitched to the edge 10 of the rear portion 2 of the glove. In addition thereto the finger portions which are stitched together form a continuous edge constituted by edges 36, 48, 62 and 74 of the finger portions and intended to be stitched to the edge 18 of the palm portion 6 of the glove. When said continuous edges are stitched to said edges of the rear portion and palm portion of the glove the finger portions are connected with the rear portion and the palm portion of the glove, the finger portions thereby taking an inwardly inclined position because of the fact that the finger portions have greater length at the rear side portion than at the palm side portion of the glove, said position being in sub- stantial agreement withthe position of the fingers at rest. It shall also be noticed that the little finger portion is positioned so as to point somewhat away from the ring finger portion because of the fact that the edge 38 is longer than the edge 30 of the little finger portion. Also in this respect the form of the glove connects with the form and the movementpattern of the hand, as the little finger portion will follow the movement of the little finger obliquel inwards against the palm when the hand covered by the glove is clenched.
Finally the palm thumb portion 80 is stitched to the rest of the glove by the fact that the edge 84 is stitched to the edge 24 of the palm portion and the edge 86 is stitched to the edge 16 of the rear thumb portion. Thereby it shall be noted that according to a special feature of a glove according to the invention the edge 84 has a greater length than the edge 24 before said edges are stitched to- gether. Thus, the stitching of the edge 84 to the edge 24 is provided at a certain compression of the material of the edge portion 84 and an extension of the material of the edge portion 24. In a glove of normal size and a material which is of medium hardness the difference between the length of the edge 84 and the length of the edge 24 is 1,5 - 2 cm.
Because of the above difference between the length of said edges 84 and 24 there is obtained an especially advantageous connection of the glove to the form of the hand because of the fact that the palm thumb portion can receive the pad sheaped bulge of the thenar muscle at the palm side of the hand without providing any creasing or wrink¬ ling of the material of the glove in the area of the palm. The connec¬ tion of the material of the glove with the palm which is provided by the described design of the edges 84 and 24 provides that the hand covered by a glove according to the invention has great sensitivity in spite of the fact that the material of the glove is relatively heavy in order to constitute an effective protection against injuries to the hand.
The glove is thereupon provided with an elastic ribbon or the like at the wrist portion thereof, said elastic ribbon preferably being adapted at the inner side of the glove. It is of course also possible to provide the glove with a wrist sleeve.
Finally the seams of the glove are ground or polished. The invention can be modified within the scope of the following claims.

Claims

C L A I M S
1. A glove, especially a- working glove, comprising a rear portion and a palm portion, the rear portion comprising a rear thumb portion and the palm portion comprising a palm thumb portion, which is connec¬ ted with the rest of the palm portion by means of a seam, c h a¬ r a c t e r i z e d in that the seam connecting the palm thumb por¬ tion with the palm portion is positioned so that it extends substan¬ tially between the thenar muscle and the rest of the palm, the palm thumb portion thereby substantially covering the thenar muscle at the palm side of the hand, and that the edge of the palm thumb portion has greater length than the edge of the rest of the palm portion be-_ fore said edges are connected with each other by means of said seam.
2. A glove as claimed in claim 1, c h a r a c t e r i z e d in that the rear thumb portion is formed in one piece with the rest of the rear portion of the glove.
3. A glove as claimed in any of claims 1 and 2, wherein the palm portion and the rear portion comprise finger portions which by means of seams are connected with the rest of the palm portion and the rear portion, c h a r a c t e r i z e d in that the finger portions have greater length at the rear portion than at the palm portion of the glove.

A glove as claimed in any of the preceding claims, wherein the palm portion and the rear portion comprise a little finger portion, a ring finger portion, a middle finger portion and an index finger por¬ tion, which by means of seams are connected with the rest of the palm portion and the rear portion of the glove, c h a r a c t e i z e d in that the little finger portion has greater length at its portion adjacent the ring finger portion than at the outer edge portion of the glove, whereby the little finger portion will point away from the ring finger portion and when being moved against the palm of the glove will move obliquely inwards against the center thereof.
