  • the scrubber will, in the first hand, remove dust, but carbon dioxide as well as ammonia will be dissolved in the washing water, and may also, in the presence of water, react and will then form ammonium carbonate. This is insoluble and can easily be separated out.
  • Carbon dioxide is a noticeable constituent in the exhausted air, and in spite of some part thereof being removed in the scrubber a residue will remain, part of which is conducted away from the circulating system in a last step.

  • Measurments have for instance shown a marked peak in the growth curve ( increase in grammes/day as a function of the termperature at varying relative humidity) for pigs, at an indoor temperature of 25oC and a relative humidity of 50% .
  • Such an atmosphere will however, together with dust and other particles dispersed in the air, i.a. during the feeding of the animals, cause favourable conditions for pathogenic micro-organisms , which is unacceptable .
  • the desiderata above referred to will be met by installing in a well-insulated stable 10 an outlet conduit 11 and an inlet conduit 12 provided with a number of collecting and distribution means 13 end 14, respectively. These means are dimensioned and located so an estimated maximum of stable air may be extracted and supplied, respectively, at a low noise level, and with a low temperature gradient within the stable.
  • the conduits are connected to a cooling battery 15 and an air circulation fan 16, which together with further components to be described below, are located in a room 17, separate from the stable, and which form a return flow system 18 for the stable air.
  • the system is very compact and thus well suited to be mounted in part of the fodder storage space, which is usually provided in conjunction. with animal stables in farm buildings.

  • the outlet conduit 11 is connected to a gas-washing device 19, a so called scrubber, to the upper part of which a washing fluid is supplied by way of a pipe 20, and is then permitted to flow freely over baffles 21.
  • the outflowing air will be purified, when it passes through the fluid curtains formed at the baffles, in the first hand mechanically by the dust particles being entrained in the fluid, but also chemically by a part of the carbon dioxide carried by the air being precipitated (depending upon the ratio between precipitating agents and volume of air). Hydrogen sulphide, which appears in limited amounts but is highly corrosive, will also be dissolved in the washing fluid.
  • the washing fluid is drained through a pipe 22 to a reaction and sedimentation vessel 23, where an agent, preferably milk of lime (Ca(OH) 2 ) is added.
  • the agent will precipitate the gases as calcium carbonate and calcium sulphate, respectively.
  • the washing fluid is returned to the scrubber through a filter 25 by means of a pump 2k .
  • the precipitated matter mainly calcium carbonate is drained through a pipe 26 and is collected for distribution over cultivated ground, where addition of lime is desirable.
  • the supply of milk of lime and of water to the reaction vessel occurs by way of a pipe 27, which is connected to a mixing tank (not shown), the inlet to the vessel being provided with a float valve 28.
  • UV-filter 29 containing a number of fluorecent lamps 30, emitting ultra-violet light.
  • the lamps are symmetrically mounted in a cabinet 31 of such dimensions, that a low flow velocity will be maintained, and thus, a satisfactory, ultra-violet input is ensured to destroy obnoxious ingredients and pathogenic microorganisms. Thereafter the bulk of the air is returned to the stable.
  • a substantially constant level of carbon dioxide content is obtainable by branching-off part of the circulating air from the inlet conduit by way of a branch conduit 32.
  • the amount to be bled-off is determined by a valve means 33a provided with a control unit 33b, which is governed by a device 34 sensing the content of carbon dioxide in the air.
  • Additional air is supplied to the system immediately upstream of scrubber 13 by way of a conduit 35 having a valve means 36a with an associated control unit 36b, which is also governed by the sensing device 34.
  • Valve means 36a is arranged to operate simultaneously and uniformly with valve means 33a.
  • the amount of carbon dioxide removed in the scrubber by the precipitating agent may be determined by varying the amount of agent supplied.
  • the branch conduit 32 is to this end connected to an aerotemper 38 at the greenhouse by way of a valve means 39, mixing a certain amount of fresh air to the ventilation plant of the greenhouse.
  • a condensate pipe 40 will supply fertilizer to the greenhouse by way of a pipe 40a.
  • the ammonia contained in the stable air will condense together with water in. the cooling battery 15, which makes the condensate suitable for irrigation purposes.
  • a stock of 250 pigs may produce 900 1/day, (of which about 1/3 will emanate from the scrubber).
  • a branch-off pipe 40b is also provided for alternative connection to the lime mud outlet 26.
  • a stock of pigs above referred to which may be regarded as a rather small one, will produce an amount of heat corresponding to about 29 000 kcal/h.
  • a recovery of this heat is made by means of a heat pump 41, the evaporator of which is formed by the cooling battery 15, above referred to, and the condensor 42 of which forms part of a low temperature heating system for the greenhouse, or, during the summer months, for the drying of fodder.
  • the temperature of the heat transferring fluid is about 40-50oC after the heat pump, and the fluid is circulated through the heating battery 43 of aerotemper 38, by way of pipes 44, 45 and a pump 46.
  • the heat pump will obtain a very high heat factor (about 5) as compared with that of a conventional heat pump (about 2,5), where the outlet air is cooled, depending upon the ppssibility to maintain a high evaporation temperature (about +5oC) with a constant temperature in the stable of about 25oC.
  • Te is ⁇ -20oC when the ambient temperature during the winter may be about -10oC, as an average.
  • a plant where the prime mover 48 operating the compressor 47 of heat pump 41 is a diesel engine may be attractive at a farm, which consumes a big quantity of diesel fuels for its tractors a.s.f.
  • the cooling water of the diesel engine is circulated through a first heat exchanger 49.
  • the cooling water is then made to pass a second heat exchanger 50, located in the exhaust conduit of the engine.
  • Those two heat exchangers for the recovery of the cooling water heat (t ⁇ 60-80°C), and exhaust gas heat (t ⁇ 200-500°C) will form a high temperature heating system 51.
  • a heat transporting fluid may have a temperature of about 80°C, which is suitable for domestic heating purposes. or for heating of consumption water, by connection to a conventional central heating system.
  • the plant above described may of course be varied in many ways within the scope of the appended claims depending i.a. upon the size of the stock and the kind of animals involved. It may for instance be advice able to provide a suction fan downstream of the scrubber 19 and possibly to adjust the temperature of the air downstream of the cooling battery by means of a heater 52, which is fed by hot water from the condensor.
  • the amount of heat recoverable from the stable may occasionally be bigger, or less, than the occasional need.
  • a heat accumulator 53 for the heat from the stable may therefore advantageously be provided.

Abstract

Le systeme comprend un epurateur (19) pour le lavage de l'air de l'etable, et une batterie de refroidissement (15) en aval de l'epurateur, ainsi que des moyens supplementaires (33, 34) pour la derivation d'une quantite d'air contenant du gaz carbonique du volume total de l'air circulant au travers de l'etable. L'eau de l'epurateur peut contenir des produits chimiques qui pourront se combiner au gaz carbonique, la batterie de refroidissement forme de preference l'evaporateur d'une pompe a chaleur et l'air derive est avantageusement fourni a un ensemble consommant une atmosphere contenant du gaz carbonique, par exemple une serre.
