Specification forming "part of Letters Petentlio. 158,??06, dated October 19, 1655; Reissue No. 8,561, dated- August 12, 1879; application filed May 20, 18!.8- 7
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Tnomns K. Lune-of Brooklyn, Kings county, in the State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements Relating to Scrubbers or Washera for Gas, of which the following is n speci flcation.
It is desirable, in ridding the gas ofite our monia, to present a proper amount of watersurface, or of a wetted surface, to every par ticle of the gas, and to do this under conditions of great uniformity, My improved apparatus is intended for this purpose, and affords o. great amount of netted surface, with facilities for distributing-water uniformly thereupon under conditions which allow the mo tion of the gas and the quantity oi the Water to be varied within wide limi'es.
The apparatus is very compact, in cheap of construction, and easy of access to every part for clcnuin g or repairs.
The accompanying drewingsrepreseni; what 1 consider the best means of carrying out the invention. v
Figure l is n centralverticel section, and Fig. 2 is a side elevation.' I
Similar letters ofrefereuce indicate like parts in both the figures.
A is a gaslight easing, of caebiron, provided with suitable apertures, covered by honncte A and A, to allow access to the interior. Gee is allowed to cnrer through a nozzle, A, near the bottom, and to be discharged through a In rising through, the casing A the gas ie scrubbed or w'aeheal by its contact with thewet surface, and the water trickling down therefrom conveys away the ammonia. \Vater is admitted from a stopcock (not represented) through a trapped pipe or sea], A, at the top end is diecherged through a, suitable trapped passage or seal, A, near the bottom.
B is a vertical shaft, mounted in the axial line of the casing A end revolved by gearing turned sl'owlyby connections from a steamengine or other suitable power. Hubs b, fixed at intervals thereon, curry circular distributors b, of shcvtilou or other suitable material, which are both perforamd and corrugated. Corrugated distributors are preferulile, though they may be made plain or in radial curves.
its revolution.
The peripheries of the distributors 5 run so, near the interior of the casing A thatJhe' small quantity of gas flowing between will be about as eflectuelly washed as that which passes up through the perforations. Internal flanges or shelves A", a little above each diatributer b, form supports for fmmee U, which are preferably bars of soft wood, rough named, and of little thickness and great depth, as shown. They may be armed with nails or other projections, (not represented,) to aidin holding each at a small distance from its neighbet on each side.
It is important to the highest success that the spaces between rhe-lgrate-bars G be approximately uniform so that the gas, in moving up through these spaces, shall be uniformly scrubbed.
When the apparatus is in use a current of gas moves upward through it,'end a spam quantity of water movee gradually in the oppoeite direction over all the surfaces. The constant moderate rotation ofthe ehaftB and its attached distributor l) receive the waterbe so greet as to throw the water with much force toward the periphery by centrifugal force. It in only desirable to keep the inner surface of the ceeing'A waited to about the same ex-j lent us the other parts. 1
The shaft B is stopped in a support near the bottom, which rests on the upturuedend of the geeinduction pipe A, and the upper end turns in a smiling-box, an represented.
The power required in insignificant. The entire apparatus occupies but little room nnd the action is unusually efilcient and uniform.
The'corrugatious in the distributors b not only aid in stiffening the distributors, but also aid in distributing the water evenly, on without them the water is liable to move too freely along the surface, and be all thrown to the 2. s.s:s1
- periphery, or, in case of the least inclination of the disgributers, an to one side.
Plane distributors may serve, but- I prefer concentric corrugations. Radial corrugations -01' grooves may be of service to prevent the water from flowing too much to either side under any eircumstancesl I claim as my invention- 1 1. The series of perforated dis trihuters 11, mounted on the shaft; B, revolving within a casing, A, in combination with gas-passages A A and water-passages A A, as and for the purposes described.
2. A frame, C, in combination with the cusing A, revolving Watendistributers b, and with gas-connections A A mid water-connections A I as and for the purposes herein specified.
