" Specification forming part otLctters. Patent No. 194,453, dated August 2l,-187 7 Reissue No. 8,407, dated September 10, 1878; application filed August 7, 1878.
Be: known'th'at I, Bromiian McNAMnEfof Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have in vented a new and valuable Improvement in Machines for Sizing or Varnishing Paper; and ,I do hereby declare that the followingis afull,
clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference. be-
ing had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and-to the letters 'and figures of reference marked thereon, 7
Figure lot the drawings is a representation of a top view of my improved machine for sizing or varnishing paper.
gitudinat verticalse'ction offthe same}, and Figs; 3, 4, and 5 are detail views.
Eigl 2- is :a lonuThis invention has-relation to m'eansfor sizing or varnishing either plain orrprinted paper-.
Heretofore, in varnishing printed labels,
show-cards, and like articles, it has been necessary to apply the size to the surface of the paper, and afterward 'lay on the varnish with a brush by hand, which is a slow and expensive operation.
- It hasa-lso'been common to apply varnish by means of a cylinder machine, the cylinder working over a flat varnish-bed, which reciprocates underneath the'cylinder. @This machine delivers the work with the varnished side downward,'and is therefore objectionable,
for if thevarnish is touched after application the surfaceis spoiled. r a l The object, therefore, of my invention is to f devise a mechanical means for applying the 7 varnished are carried by the drum over the surface of the varnishin g-roller and discharged I face upward.
It also consists in the combination, with a drum and a varnishing-roller arranged tangential thereto, of a yieldingprojection at the end ofthe feed-table to hold thepaper up 0E said roll, as hereinafter more fully set forth.
In theannexed drawings, the letter A designates the frame of "my varnishing-machine, which isflprovided with a feed-table, B, and above the same a discharging-frame, O, which ali'ord's bearings for the discharging devices, consisting, in the construction illustrated, of
"a number of conveyer-tapes, E, passing over transverse) shafts 1),,to which motion is communicated through the medium of belts connectin g with thedriving-shaft of the machine.
Bdesignates the main cylinder, which carries the work. This drum or cylinder, when made of wood, is provided with strong metallic heads a and a deep longitudinal groove, 0, llLWhiQkjSfiQfitBd the usual griper-rod d, which has its bearings in the heads 0, and is provided upon one of itsgends, which projects through the head, with a, dog, d,the heel of which engages with a spur,v projecting inward from the frame,'at each complete revolution ,thereby rotatin the griper-rod and opening the gri'pn p ers. feed-table B, the sheetto be varnished having been passed between said gripers and the cyl inder B, the serrated edge of thedogisbrought into contactwith a second spur, dfiprojecting inward from th'eyframe, thereby reversingthe action of the gripcr-rod and causing the grip ers to clamp the sheet to'the cylinder, so that as the latter continues to revolve'saidsheet wilLbe carried over the varnishing-rollerB25; which is arranged below the cylinder B' and tangential, theretol; This roller B? is covered with a soft or yielding material, and is supplied with varnish ,from'avtrough or fountain, .7
N, belo,w it; It is caused to rotate in unison with the drum B by means of 'a gear-wheel, f, which en gagesa gear-wheel, f, applied upon the end of the drum-shaft. The-varnish upon the surface of the varnishing-roll B? will be applied to the under side of the sheet-that is,- the printed sidethexeof-said sheet being-laid upon the feed-table thee, downward, any ex; cessot varnish being taken up 'and'the var-f nish being evenly distributed by an auxiliary roller or cnt-ofl', M, which is arranged" tangential to the varnishing-roller in hearings in the'frame- As the sheet is carried around by the drumthe dog of the latter will strike against the spur aforesaid and the gripers will sienna 'ro hen'thelatter are on a level with the I he opened, thereby releasing r-the sheet at, the moment that its front edge is on a level with the discharging-tapes, Thesheetwill' then be discharged from'the cylinder with the varnished side upward, and carried by the tapes'to the rear end of the apparatus, when it wvili be I taken away to be dried.
In order to prevent the label or sheet as it leaves theffeed-table'and is seized by the gripers from saggingrdown upon the varnisha roller B andbeing'ysmirched thereby,2a preventive projection',-J, is arranged at the end of the feedta.ble, jand extends upward at a suitable inclination, toward thecyli'nder, being journaled: to have a movement of vibration at theeiid of the table, which movement is gov-.
erned by ,a cam, h, and aeontroll-ing-arm,'Q, in order that this upholding device or projection shall not bind against the drum and therebydraw the'sheet away from the gripers.
7 Having described my invention, what I claim, and'des'ire to secure by. Letters Patent, v v
L' varnishing-machine having the gripin c'arrying-eylinder B and below the samethe' varnishing-roller and varnish-trough and the V feed-table, and above the. feed-tablqon alevel 2 v I -s,407
with the iipper surface of the cylinder, the discharging-tapes, whereby the work is discharged with the, varnish side up, substantially as specified, 1 w i V 2. The combination, in a varnishing-machine, with the upward-carrying cylinder B and it's-feeding and discharging devices, delivering-the sheets from the top of the cylinder face upward, "of the varnishingmoller, var
nish-trongh, and cut-01f roller, substantially as specified; a
3. The combination, in a varnishing-ma- "chine, with the carrying-cylinder B' and its gripers, of the feed-table B, discharging-belt O, varnishing-roller Bfl'varnish-trough N, and
cut-ofl M, substantially as specified.
4. The combination, in a varnishingmachine witlithe varnish-roll and. feed-table of an npholding projection at the endof the table, substantially as specified. 5
In testimony that I, claim the above I have snbsoi'ihed niyname in the presenceof two witnesses.- Y z 4 RICHARDM ME Witnesses:-
