Description
IGNAZIO ALLEGRETTI, F lNEVV YORK., ll, Y., ASSGNQE, BY MESNE ASSIGN MENTE, T FRANCESCO FONTAN.
imreevsfmsnr is sssmeena'ross;
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 165,763, dated July 2, i870; reissue No. 5,38%', dated October 8, 1872.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I ,TGNAZIO ALLEGRETTI, now of the city and ccunty and State of New York, formerly' of the city and county oi Philladelphia and State'of Pennsylvania, have in;
' vented certain new and useful Improvementsl in Refrigerators, or structures for preserving perishable articles; and I do hereby declare that the following is a lfull, clear, and exact description thereof, and of their construction ,and operation, reference being had to tire acl companying. drawing and to the letters of reti erence marked thereon and making a part ci this specification. y Y
The object of my invention is the-construction of a refrigeratoror structure for keeping cool, and thereby preserving, perishable arri-- cles, whereby an intense degree of cold can be produced when desired, so that perishable `articles placed in it can be retained oven ina frozen state, and Water can be, frozen and be- -come solid icc. The refrigerator can thus be made to form its own ice, after being once lled, and can be so regulated that the quantity of ice produced will be suicient fordaily consumption, and to supply the necessary amount to retain an uniform low temperature. This improved refrigerator is so constructed that the ice or cooling-mixture, and cold air therefrom, Wholly or substantially surrounds the entire chamber in which the articles to be u preserved are placed, and access is had, to
such chamber without exposing the ice or cool ing-material to the air, thereby securing a more uniform temperature, and causing the icc to last much longer Without melting i and snol. chamber .is also so arranged that it can be readily removed at any time for the puc pose of cleansing it, or for any other purposes.
Figure l is a vertical section of my improved refrigerator. Fig. 2 is a tcp view of 'the same. with the' outer cover opened, and a pertion. of the inner cover broken away in order to show the interior. i
The refrigerator consists ot' :t metallic chain` lber,tAr,n1adein any suitable form, and in separate compartments when desired, and may also be fitted or provided, in its interior, with a series or' shelves, S, placed one aboveanother. Snell metallic chamber is placed in the interior 0i' a metal-lined or other case, U, and is supported therein on a frame, F, which raises the metallic chamber above the bottoniv of the case -tlle case o .being made somewhat larger than the inelosed metallic one so as to form au 'ice-space, above and on the sides or" such metallic chamber, and a cold-air cheniber, F', below it. The frame F is preferably made of slats, or open, so as to expose v ille bottoni or the chamber A to the action of the eooli ng or freezing material placed around such chamber. The case G is inciosed in an outer casing or box, B, of larger dimensions, having au intervening space, O, between the two, which may be 7iilled with any non-conducting"material, or allowed to remain vacant or uniiled, so as tc permita tree circulation of ein Resting on tb e'upper edge of the case 1U and fitting closely against the inner sides of the bei; Al5 is cover, it, having; an opening in the center, irland around which opening is .fitted a metallic or wooden frame, E, which extends downward to and rests upon the top of` the chamber A, and the opening in the top of such, cover, and withi'nfthe frame E, is' closed by means of the cover l). Suchcover .t around 'the frame E may als@ be constrncted W ith an intervening space, 0', which, like the space (l, may be filled with any ncn-con ducting material, erleft as an air-chamber.
The metallic chamber A. is provided with an v opening, la, in its upper part or side, fitted. with a cover, J, shuts or passes down against the sides of the frame E, and should it perieetly air-tight over such ope-nin 0'. This part of the chamber A may be also provided with a rim or impec, G,surror1nding the frame E, which. assists in thrilling a tight joint for such frame, allows :tor the passage ot any water fr y aceinnulatc on the outside of the J, and more eeetuafly protects the iu the chamber or space l.
By ille arrangement of the frame E as above described., the covers ,D and J may be removed .errar OFFICE.'
6. h1 combination. with the iuuo ohmnoer A and @closing-oase, the out@ box Bprovidad with oovoaf E', as and for he pwposs so@ form. A
cover J to its: opening' Rio combination. with the nolosngoase C, tged With covers R and D, and with the from@ E and. mlge (Eny around the opening of the inner ohmber and frame F, for supporting smh innarouambr in the inc1osng-ose,a wronged substantially as desobed, to Secura 'oo and oom-air space around and below smh innrfohamber, and portait access thereto Withofsltoxposng such ico and @oid-air spas@ to the Gxtema' wir? for the purposes sot forth.
