IMPROVEMENT IN MACHINES FOR THE MANUEACTURE OIF I OZENGES.
Specification forming part of Letten; PatenfNofil, dated J nlyj, 1363.-; reissue No. 4,664, dated November 14, 1871.
.To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, OLIVER RICE CHASE, of Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improved Machine for Manufacturing Lozenges or other articles from paste or dough; andl do hereby de- Clare that'the same is fully described in the following specification and represented in-theaceomp'anying drawing, of which- Figure 1 is a top View; Figs. 2 and 3, side elevations; Fig. 4, a central and longitudinal section' of suchmachine; Figisaperspective view of its cutters and their carrying-bar; Fig. 6, an elevation of the comb-plate which operates in connection with the cutters. Fig. 7 is a longitudinal section of one of the supporters of the cutter-carrier, such section being made to exhibit the spring andthe socket of the supporter.
The nature of my invention or improvements consist in a. combination and arrangement of an extra delivery-apron with the main deliveryapron, the paste-receiving and sugarin g apparatus, and mechanism for stamping outfor cutting the lozenges from the paste; the object of the said extra delivery-apron, when used as hereinafter set forth with the main delivery-apron and the apparatus for reducing the paste and sugar4 ing it on both sides, being' to enable thcsheet of paste to be seen on both of its sides or flat surfaces preparatory to its being subjected to the action of the cutters. Also, in an arrangement and combination of the delh'erylapron, the cutter-board, and cutters with a lozenge-receiver or a discharging-apron, the same not only enabling the sheet of paste to drop vertically and fall by its own weight preparatory to and after being cut, but causing the cutters to discharge the lozenges in manner set forth into a receiver, or on the discharging-apron or boards placed thereon. Also, in a combi nation and arrangement of a surface-changing apron, the cutter-board, and the series of cutters `as and for the purpose hereinafter set forth. Also, in an arrangement and eolnbination of a surface-el ian'gin g apron wi tlrtlie cutter-board, thc delivcryapron, the cutters, and the lozen gc-receivcr or disellargiiig-apron, as hereinafter specified. Also, in an arrangement and combination of a comb-plate or its equivalent with the cutters and their cutter-board or device for supporting the tion ot' the cutters.
paste or flough under thenc- In the drawing, A exhibits the frame of the machine, on the upper part of which there 'isisI supplying or feeding endless apron, 3B, and two other endless aprons, C D, the vthree apronsbe ing disposed with respect to each other, 4 anti around drums or rollers a b c d e f, as showlifln Figs. l und 4. rlhe rollersy dvand e,pwl,1ile they, serve to give support to two of' the aprons, op crate with such to reducefthe pasteto a sheet equa-l thickness while it may be passingbetweeu them. Furthermore, directly over each of the aprons C D there ,is a gauge-bar or plata'I g, which, being arranged so asto extend from side to sich.` of the frame of the machine and at a short die tance above the apron, gauges the thickness sugarwhich, bythe apron, may be carried inte contact with the sheet of paste or dough formed between the said twoaprons 0, D. Whilethe is placed in the sugar receptacle E, situated at the back of each gauge-plate g.` Directl under neath the said aprons G D is an endless eliyeryf apron, F, working aronnda supporting-board, li, and two rollers, i k, which are disposed as' shown in Fig. 4. llhis apron I term the extra delivery-apron. Furthermore, immediately below the apron l" apron G, carried by two drums or rollers, lm. This latter apron is not only much longer thanl the apron-F, but projects beyond both of the supporting rollers or the latter, as shown in the drawing, the same being not only so'that the sheet of paste, after being discharged from the apron F, may i'all uponorbe received bythe apron i by it so far be- G, but that it may be canied youd the front rol ler oi' the apron F as to be capable ot being inspected or readily scen, polished und sugared in case its upper surface may need any more powdered sugar applied to any part of it preparatory to such part being carried in con tact with the cutters. By means of the two delivery-aprons F and G all portions of both sides or opposite surfaces of the hemden and examined before such portions may be made to pass across -,the cutter-boards.
The severalurrows shown in the drawing serve to indicate the directions ot' movements ot' parts to which they are applied.
lielowi'lie i'ront end ot' the delivcry-aprolr the cutter-board Il is disposed withx its i'atiigup right, or nearly so. -A snrface-changig endless is disposed the main delivering- Sheet Qf raste'ni xed4 upon a shaft, 'z, that apron, I, is disposed so as to pass entirely 'around and rest against the face o'r' the cutter-board, as shown in Fig. 4, such apron being supported by the cutter-board and a drum, "a, A ratchet wheel, o, is fixed on the shaft of the roller n, and operated by a draW-p'aWl, p, whose upper part embraces an eccentric, q, carried by a cam-shaft, K, arranged as shown in the drawing, the object of such ratchet and pawl being to so move the said apron as to cause it to present a neu7 or different surface to the action of the cutters at each successive forward movement of the latter. In front of the cutter-board H a series of tubular cutters, L 'L L, is arranged, so asdto project from a supporting-bar, M, as shown in the drawing. Each tubular vcutter extends through the bar IVI, and is open at its opposite ends in order that the lozenges received into the cutter at one end may be discharged at its other end and caused, by their own gravity, to fall intoa receiver orl upon an endless carrier or deliveryapron, N, arranged. around a platform, o2, and two sustaining rollers, P Q, as shown in Fig. 4. Each end of the cuttenbar M rests in a recess or socket, s, formed'in thel head of one of two slide-rods or sliders, t t, each of which is snp ported in a tubular socket or bearing, u', and so as to be capable of sliding in a direction longitudinaily ofthe machine. A spring, c, is so disposed as toact against the rear end of the slider.v in manner to press such slider toward the cani-shaft K. Such shaft K is furnished with,
lcams w fw, ivhich, during each revolution of the .sharia are caused to act against the front ends of thesliders s'o as to move the vsliders rearward and cause them to force the cutters into the paste and against the apron around the cutter-board. The shaft K may be considered as the drivingshaft of the machine. It carries two grooved pulleys, a b', around which, respectively, two endless bands, c d', are made to work. One of the said bands, or the foremost one c', runs around a leading pulley, about which another endless band, j, works, and transfers motion to a pulley, g1, fixed upon the shaft of the rearmost drum of the foremost or discharging-apron N, the same serving to put such a'pron in movement. A crossed belt, d', also extends about a pulley, h1,
carries a pinion, k.V which engages with a gear, h2, fixed on the snails of the compressing-roller e, and as the two compressing-rollers l e are geared together by gears g4 h, arranged as shown in Figs. l and Ii, they, with their endless or sugaring-aprons C l), receive motion when the shaft K is put in rotation. Furthermore, by means of a pulley, i', fixed on the shaft of the rearmost compressing-roller e, motion is,4 at thc same time, imparted to an endn less band, m', that traverses about a pulley, In', fixed on the shaft of the rearmost drum l cf the Umain deliv ry-apron (l. B y suoli means the main delverin g-apron G will be put in operation. The shaft of the rearmost drum or roller' carries a gear, o1, that engages with. a gear, p iixcd on the vshaft of the rearmost drum of the extra delivery-apron F, such apron being made to receive motion by means of such devices. The uppermost or feedingapron B is moved by means of an endless heit, q', which traverses around' two pulleys, r s', one of which is iixed ou theshaft ot' the rearmost compressing-roller e, while the other is carried by the shaft of the rearmost drum I of the feeding-apron. Between the cut ters L and the cutter-board H there is a perforated plate lor comb, o.' This comb has its teeth projectiugdown, so as topass vbetween the cut-, ters; or it maybe a plate constructed with holes of the same shape and sise in cross section of the said cutters. The purpose of this plate or comb is to hold back the scraps of paste during. the retreat of the cutters'irom the cutterboaid. Owing to the peculiar arrangement or position of the said comb o the cuttenboardv and its surface-changing apronthe scrapswill be caused to pass downward and be discharged from the machine by the power of gravity, and besides, after each cutter may have become lled with thelozenges, each succeeding lozenge that may be re ceived in it will force those in advance of it forward and cause the outermost one of' them to drop outI of the rear end of the cutter and into the receiver or upon the endless deliveringapron N, immediately under thesa-me.
During the operation of the machine the paste will beprepared or'rcduced to a proper thickness and sugared on both sides, and will .hang down y upon the front .face of the apron Vof 'the cutterbeard. While it is in suchLposition the cutters, which may be of such shape and size in crosssectiou as may be desirable, are forced through it by the operations of the cams of the shaft K, the recession of the cutters being eii'ected by the springs applied to' their sliders,'hereinbefore described. The lozenges fall out of the rear ends r of the cutters and' into a receiver, er upon the surface of the discharging-apron, or upon boards or trays laid thereon..
Having thus described my improved machine for making lozcnges, as Well as the mode of its operation, I will remark that, in comparisonwith most other machines for such purpose, itpossessesf some eminent advantages both as to simplicity of construction and to the manner in which it operates, and affords sight o f the paste preparatory to its beingeutinto lozenges and discharged from the machine.
