The Schedule referred'to in these Letters, Patent making 'part of the same.
I, HAUNCEY O. Gnnnsn, ofthe city ot' Troy,
county of Rensselaer and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tater- Resewoirs forCooking-Stoves and Ranges, of which the following 'is a specification.
vThe natureof my said invention consists in locating ancharranging the water-reservoir for tank-at the iront end ofthe stove or range,- directly under the a combination with said hearth-plate and water-res:
ervoir or tank to when requisite,
The said vremovable covers, lidso1 valves may be flush with the sulface of the hearth-plate, or slightly elevated above, as may be found most convenient, and they mayA also be hinged to said hearth-plate, or not, as deemed best by the manufacturer. i
It also consists in forming ,the front vend or wall of the stove, at and below the above-mentioned hearth-- plate, by one side or wall of the reservoir or tank, and the combination ofthe said reservoir-or tank with the stove in 'an intimate, compact, and strong manner, whereby' is formeda'reservoir cooking-stove or range of a less number of plates o'r castings than heretofore lequired; and.
properly close and cover the "saine It also consistsinthe heating ofthe said 'water-tank'- or reservoir by means ofa flue-space,L chamber, or the 'equivalent' thereof, formed, constructed, or situated between the reservoir or tan and the front wall of theoven of the stove. 'The said flue-space or chambe'r communicating with the tlnes of the stove so that the products of combustion may be brought in direct contact with the wall or side ofthe reservoir or tank, Thisy ilu e' Space, chamber, or the'equivalent thereof, being also thereby heating the same and its contents.
for the furtherlobject and purposejof keeping the heat within the -stove-oven, andlof preventing its beingv cooled off when fresh or cold water is put in the'reservoir `or tank.
{,Figure 3-is a transverse verticalseetion through the water-reservoir or tank; apd
Figure 4 is a ve1'tical` longitudinal section, showing a heating-chamber or flue-space next the water-reservoirs sida vThe saine letters refer to like parts in each of `thel said figures.
General Description..
The stove or range is constructed with diving-dues,
and an oven in the usual manner, excepting'that-pait under the hearth-plate-'and next ,adjoining the oven thereof. I
The hearth-plate is constructed about as usuatin such'stoves, and isV placed at any convenient height;
and I have usually an ash-pit connected therewith, or
cast in one piece, about as shown in the drawing. The front of the stove below theheartli-plate is open.
A water-reservoir or tank, B, ismade of suitable material, formed so as to fit snug and close all around under the hearth-plate, its upper edge joining thereto, and its back wall next to the'stove fitting close against the opening inthe stove below the hearth-plate, closing it up, so that the said wall of the reservoir forms the front wall of the stove proper :and it is also provided with holding-lugs a a at each end thereof, which are perforated to receive holding-bolts b b.
This reservoir or tank B, after firsthaving itsjoin ing-places at or under the hearth-plates, and alsothe reservoir-top yedges properly coated with suitable cee ment to 'make water-tight joints, isthen adjustediin position, its back bottom edge resting upon the front edge ofthe bottom plate 'of the stove, and it is then, secured firmly and permanently in such suspended po sition from under thehearth-plates Eby means of they bolts and nuts b b, in manner substantially as shown.,
vThe 'watenreservoir or -tank B thus forms-directly,
' by its wallJ, the end or front wall of the stove, and,
as shown in iig. 2, of the oven, the oven bottomplate No and top plate also reaching thereto and joining therev with, and' then the reservoir is heated mainly by heat radiated from' the oven; and, when constructedas shown iniig. 4, the lreservoir-is heated bymeans of a flue-space or chamber formed between its wail J l and the front wall of the oven 1T.
chamber is constructed and located for the purpose of This flue-space or heating saidreservoir or tank, and also to prevent the cooling of thepven when fresh orv cold water is added,
to the reservoir.
. In fig. 2 the oven reaches or extends forward tothel reservoir, and one wall of the reservoir J forming the.'- front w'allof the oven, and infig. t a ue ory chamber inter venes, as above described. A
One or more openings are form ed through the hearthplate E, which gives access to the interior of the waterreservoir or tank, to'p'ut in and take out' water therefrom.
The openings Grarelprvided with either removable;` covers or' l in ged lidsF, which, when closed, form-spart; of the hcartl|-plateslevel surfhce, or, asshownin iig.; 1, they may be elevated above, to snit theeonvenienee of the manufacturer. -v
As this water-reservoiror minkr is loentedtvholly below the hearth-plnteE, suspcnded'thercfromljaud in combination therewith, and forward of the firelhox' or chaimber of combustion I, the water therein-(when constructed as shown in g. 2) is heated by thefmdiiil tion of heat from the oven H. to -the reservoir troll or sideJfnvheh practically fcnnses a continuousrrising current of warm water at bnd near the reservoirs side J, in manner about :is shown 'by the zyrinwsjn the 11m-wing, until thewnter therein is equally heated;
' and when constructed as shown in Eg.' 4 of .the'ani nexed'drnwing, and hereinbcfore described, theheating-ohznnbcr or flue-space, or its equivalent, d,`,mzikes combination with t-hebottom flue-space K, inninner so that the'produetsof combustion and heat from the fides rise and fill said chamber or flue ll, and strike or impingedirectly on or against the side of the reservoir J, which thus beets the water thelein, having the same 'eeeton the walter as when heatcdUfroni the oren H, as before described.
In the construction of ligsdthe cooling ofthe oven i is prevented, (when fresh wateris addcdtothelinteror ofthe reservor.,)..as might be the cais'e when the oven andresewoir arein toojntiimte connection.'
. I form the pmt of my ash-pitv situated outside of the stove proper wholl y within 'my reservoir, :is shown inthe accompanying drawing, the leservoir wells snrrounding the saine, and the hearth-plate forming the top-plate of both ash-pit and reservoir.'
- It is obvious that I need not confine myself to ex- :ictly this construction1 or location of thensh-pit, es
my reserwoir, and its combination and connection with thels'tbveV is. independent thereof, as the front wnllf and the endwnlls of the reservoir do not come in eontarot with the :ish-pit.- J, i The part of'the ash-pitjin the uppernart of the :neservoirisnn outward extension ofthe ash-'pit under #the iepot,'thelbottom of which is marked D, and the outward extension thereofmarked 0..
` Hring thus described my invention,
. f W'ha't I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Pat- 'ent of; the UnitedStates, is v g 1L `In combination with a eooking-stove or range the location and suspension of\ 'a hot-water reservoir or'v next to or adjoining the oven H or heating-ehtimberl d, in manner substantially as hereinbefore described and shown, forthe purpose set forth. t 2. In cooking-stoves or ranges, the combination and attachment of the water-reservoir or tank with `:ind to 111e hearth-plate E, when extended outward from be low the vtire-,grate or fire-place I, in manner no as to also to hold and s npport the same in vpermanent sus pendcd position from thereunder, substantially as yherein set forth,
tbrough the-hearthfpletc E, to gire access to the'interior offthe reservoir or tank B, provided witheuit able eoi'ers or L valves F, for closing the seme when required.`
A4:. Forming the end woll or sido` of n cooking-stove' or range below the hearth-plete E nndash-pt O,A and next the oven H, or heating-chamber d, by means of n water-reservoir or tank side J, when arrzmged in combination, substantially es described and shown.
5.. As :ti-ranged with a diving-flue cooking-stove or range, the combination of the hearth-plate E and wnter-reservoirvor tank B. ywhen suspended therefrom es described, with the heating-chamber d, ovenH, and oven bottom` ilue-spiee K, in manner as herein shown :nidfor thepurpose-set forth.
