EDWARD H. ASHCROFT, OF LYNN, MASSACHUSETTS.
Letters Patent No. 81,57 6, dated September 1, 1868; reissue No. 4,045, dated June 28, 1870.
IMPROVEMENT IN NON-CORROSIVE VALVE-SEATS.
'I'ha Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I,
Boston, in the county chnsetts,
Boilers; is a full, clear, and exa The objectbf my metals, or com manufacture steam-boilers,
tion of water, steam,
It is well known to e the valve itself adheres so strongly that somewhat by probably be subjected.
' I do not confine myself to any exact proportions in but to enable others skilled in castin these alloys, the ar to make them, I
First, the alloy of nickel and copper, best suited to is composed of from seventy to eighty with from twenty to thirty per this purpose, per cent. of copper,
This all the desired form.
have invented new and improved Non-corrosive Compositions of Metals for Valves for Steamand I do hereby declare that the-following positions of metals, to be used in the of safetyvalves, or other valves for as will not become corroded by theseair, nor by any other action to which such valves are exposed.
ngineers and others that many, if not all, of the "safety-valves frequently become corroded to the whole object of such valvesis defeated, and great danger to life and .property ensues.
consists in making these valves from the following non-corrosive alloys 0r metals, any andall of which answer the purpose more or less to wit: analloy of nickel and copper,
combinations of the above.
' I prefer, sometimes, to make the valve itself of one I and the seaifiof another, and, in the choice of the metal to be used, am' governed the exposure to \vhicl EDWARD H. Asnonorr, of of Suffolk and State of Masct description thereof. invention is to provide such now in common use, such an extent that to or is cemented to the seat perfectly, free from zinc; yed an alloy of gold or silver;
1 the valve will will state- Second, the alloy of aluminium, best suited for valves,
per cent. of aluminium. This haves well under the file, mctalin common use.' i I There are other alloys of aluminium well known to persons 'skilled'in metallurgy which are more or loss non-corrosive, but 1 consider substantially the above proportions the best adapted to the purpose.
Third, alloys of gold with silver and copper are noncor'rosive, and the best proportions are ninety per cent. of gold with ten per cent. of copper, or ninety per cent. of copper with ten per cent. of silver.
Fourth, combinations of the alloys mentioned above, in different proportions, yieldalloys well adapted for safety-valves, but the most important practical and best alloy found is that of copper and nickel as first above gi'ven.
Having thus described my invention, 7 I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. An alloy of nickel and copper, substantially as and for the purpose set forth. 2. An alloy of aluminium and copper, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
3. An alloy of silver and copper, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
4. An alloy of gold and copper, for thepnrpose set forth.
5. Combinations of the above with each other, :vhich yield a non-corrosive alloy, for the purpose set orth. c.
6. Aluminium alone, for the construction of valves or valve-seats, for the purpose set forth.
alloy is easily cast, be-
substantially as and Witnesses 0y may be rolled andcnt into MATTHEW PLUMsr'sAD, Funnnnw W. Asncnorr.
is one containing ninety per cent. of copper and ten and tarnishes less than any
