IMPROVEMENT IN CIOMPENSATING OR EQUILIBRIUM SPRINGS.
The Bohtdnlb rden-.11d to h1 than Lettrs'Patnmi and n aking pm of the .am
To all whom it may conoo'rn Be it known that I, CHARLES SHEA, of Newark, in the county ot" Essex and State of New J erse have invented n new and improved Gompcnsnting r riulu Spring for Ruilwadoer Trucks; and 1 L dechire that the followipg is n full, clezir, nud exo s description thereof', which will enable others skilled in the ait to make and use thesnme, reference bein g hud to the `nctminlmnying druwing forming pint oi this specification, in which- Figure' 1 is n side view of :i railroad-cnr spring pro- -vided with my compensating attachment. f
Figure Z is a. vertical transverse section o1" the some.

'lhc object of this invention is to provide menus for :avoiding-the jur and ineonveuience on rnh'ond cnrs, und lor econolnizing springs ou the sume.
The invention consists chiefly in providing compensating springs in connection with the ordinary springs of,
trucks, cnrs, locomotives, the Suid compensating springs being so nrrzinged that they :ict in opposite. directions to the moin springs. \Vhen the pressure is on the mnin or bearing spring it is ofi' the compensating spring, und when on llie lutter it is oit' the former.
It isv well known thnt railroad-cans, tenders, 83e., when loaded, ure not so li-.ible to break their springs ns they nrc when noiv loaded, because, in the lutter coso, the greut shock produced by the passing ot' the wheels over pnever. portions ot' the truck, or over hndly-iitted rauh-ont. joints, wiil produce :1 rebound of the canbody injurious to the spring.
By my invention :dl these defects nre entirely over come, :is the udditionnl counteroeting springs keep all the moin springs so hula-need that they cannotbe overst-rained when the weight on thenris suddenly thrown off, with n lendeney of stretching them in the wrong direction.
ln the drawing nre illustrated various modiiieulirnis of my invention, showing it applied in dilerent forms.
It will be noticed that in :ill eases the sume principle is applied, to wit, that of providing a counteracting spring to the main bearing spring of urnilrond-cnr truck. y
A in thedrnwing represents the axle-box oi u 'can'- trucli, of suitable construction, said box being strappedto tbe. main spring 1).,'tliatis suspended from the trueki frame C.
The box works up and down in .a slotted pluto, D. E is e. pin, suspended from lthe box A, undiiitted through-:in aperture in the Lower end, of thephit-cl).
ik in tig. 5, the pin E, by which the springlr 153 conis interposed between A and the lower port of D, and {it-ted around E. I
\V,hcn n weight presses upon the fname C, `the spring yA spiral volute, rnbbeijor other snitnble spring,1`, l
- B is stretched us the frame is lowered; but when bysudden juis the i'rninc is thrown up, 1t compresses the sprinf F, und thereby prevents nil pui-ts from coming,r into violent cont-not, und lfrom injury thereby.
1 1u iig. 3 is shown n device for the iront trunks oi" locomotives, und for tenders.
The truck-frame C is sui'iportod by the hoses A, which :ire in pairs connected with the ends ot' the marin vsprung; B, sn-id mzin spring being, by :t linl, d, und strap, fitted at the middle upon the i'rnnic G1.
Volute springs, or rnbberenshions, or other springs, F1, nre interposed between every box Al, and :L shonl` der, e, of the pin Iil, by which such box is connected with the milin sprin'f. The spring,Y FP will then here the sanne effect on the main spring ns in the ousc before sot forth.
Figs 4 und 5 show two sinds ot' loeoniotirtl-spring,1 bearings. v
'In tig. 4 the ninin spring llt2 hws its ends, by sii-nps f, connected with the tranne G2, while its middle rests on :i pin, E", which projects from the box AE.
A tint spring, F2, projects from the lower port ol` the spring B, und has its ends supported on rubber cushions G, :is-shown, snid cushions being formed on pins which fit loose into the i'rinne. In this euse the cushions G iorlu pro-t of :ind not in conjunction with the eompcnsnting spring Ft'.
neeted with the axle-box A", is represented us fitting upon urubber or other spring oushioiwFf', which is plneed upon the frame CJ.
ln uli oi these euses the springs l?, F, li", und F uct ns compensating springs, in the 'manner :nid for thepurpose herei'nbefore -Set fort-h. They :ire com pressed when them-nin springs B i Ba urecxl pnnded, undstretohed when the sume nre compressed, i i'or the purpose specified. p Hering thus described my invention,
I claim :is new und desire to secure by Letters',
lntentm l The compensating springs BLM, Miur M', npl plied to the frames of railroad-cur trucks, in combi nation with the main bearing springs B, Bl, B, or 13, and with the axleboxes, as set forth. i CHARLES SHEA.
