To auwmtmeywotwn.- y
Be it known'. that I, :ANDREW B. CLnMoNa-of Ans'ouia, in the county of New Haven, and State of Connecticut, have invented a: new Improvement in Friction-Clutch' Pulley; and I do hereby declare' the-follo wing, when taken inl'connection withthe ucompanying-drawings, andv they letters of reference maked' thereon, to be a f ull, clear, and exactv description of `the same, and which` saidv drawings constitute 'part o f th'is specification, audfreprescnt, in
Figure 1, side view of my improved pulley, and in IIligurev 2, a'longitudiual central section of the Bl.
Thlsimprovement relates to an improvement in 'lotlon-chitch pulleys, that is, pulleys to which poweris coupled by an inclined frietional surface, working in or ou toi a corresponding inclined sur- .faneoh the pulley,so that one revolving, the 'other llaoansed'torevolve'by the friction created between the said inclined surfaces and The invention .consists in thearrangement, on one part, of a lever, one 'end of which is formed' with a screw-thread,` and operating soas towork intoi a corresponding screw-thread on the other part, and so that when the said lever isturned, to bring its thread into the threads of .the other part, the one part revolving, will draw the other' part-toward it, or itself toward the otherpart.`
In the diawiugs1 have represented the pulley as arranged so as to slide freely on the shaft axially, andthe other part orI friction-plate iixed tothe shaft, so as-to revolve with it, 'and 1 'will thus dcneribe it.
A is the pulley, revolvingdoosely upon the shaft B, furnished with ahah, C, upon which screw-thread is cut.
Fastened upon the sairhshaft B, and revolving with it, is placedthefriction-plate or'clutch v1).' The incline upon its face is fitted to acorresponding incline' in the pulley A..
Held in,1and extending through this friction-plate,
in which theyforlnbeaiings, are two levels-E and E', made similar to each'ot-lier in form, the jaws oi' both ofgwhfi'eh are vprovided ywitha screw-thread, to correspond with the similar thread upon the hub of the pulley.
These jaws'are operated, that is, opened and closed upon the huh, by means of aslide, F, which moves freely upon ythe shaft, andis connected with the ship- The portion of the said slide nearest to and around the shait, is constructed with' an incline, to act upon the levers when they are open', and force the said i levers out,and close the jaws upon the hub, as shown in iig. 2.
vUpon thissaid slide, fuifth'er from the shaft, and over the levers," pins a aars placed. The object 'of these pinsl is to act .upon the upper vinclined side of the lever, as the slide F is carried' back by the shiplines, iig. 2.
the friction-plate and the hull-of the pulley, `to carry the said pulley hack, when released 'by the jaw,-to the position shown in broken lines, fig. 2.
ment.
The operation is'as follows:
Vheu the shaft is in -opemtiom the frietionfplate and the pulley A are drawn together, in thcposition shown in yfigs; l and 2; 4 Y
If. it is desired to stop the-motionof the shaft-the slide F is thrown back by means ofthe shipper, in 'which operation the pins strike the iuclines. onthe levers, and throw'thern down, which movement opens'. the jaws or threaded ends of the said levers, and 'releasesy themfrom the thread upon the huh G, as shown in brokenilines. Y
i The spring l), 'acting .upon the hub-of the pulley,
immediately presses it away from the friction-plate, and carriesthe said pnlley'ba'ikfuntil lit strikes the shoulder upon the shaft, as shown in fig. 2.'
slideF is 'thrown forward. The incline thereon strikes,v the arms of the levers, forcingthem outward, aml consequently pressing the jaws down upon-the hub C. 'The pulley itself lis held firm by the belt, so that it ldoes not revolve with the shaft, but so soon as the friction-plate, revolving'with the shaft, draws thepu'lley, by means of the thread, on to the friction-plate,
so farV that the friction between the two is greater than the power required to turn the pulley, the pulley will tum with the clutch and shaft, until released by the-opening of the levers and jaws.
Itlwill he obvious that one lever only 'will accomplish the object, yetI. prefer two or more; and it will be further obvious that if what is here represented as the pulley be arranged upon .the shaft, so as to have o movement axially, (as `must he the caso if it'be 'a gear,) the clutch-plate must be arranged, so as to he drawn toward the pulley, that is, the clutchplate must 'slide axially on the shaft, but so asito turn with the shaft. 4
While Ihave represented the levers as fixed to the friction-plate, to those familiar with this classof1na chinery, it will be evident that the levers nty, if preferred, be hung in the pulley or other part A,
also that. the operation `of the levers may becaused '.-by ai direct connection, as a 1ink,`to the slide F, in-
per, and force open vthe jaws, as Ashown in' brokenv` b is a spiral spring, placed 'upon the shaft, between' This completes the'constructionofl my improvev If desired to bring the -shaft in to operatioiuthe4 the threaded huh formed in the friction-plate, an
ver. I claim, as my inventionstead of the inclinev on the slide and'inoline on the 1.The two parts'Aand D of a. friction-cl`utch,l
combined with oneor morel threaded levers E, hung in one part, and a corresponding threaded hub on -the other part, so4 that by tile revolution Yof one of the parts, the two maybe drawn together, substantially in the manner set forth.
2. In combination with the subject-.matter ofthe first clause of.' olaim, the vslide F, arranged so thug.. by its axial movement on the shalt, the-levers may:
b e operated, to cause. the two parts vot'- the clutch to run together, substantially as set forth. y f ANDREW B. ,OLEMON Witnesses:
