Description

UNITED STATES ELIZABETH ELLINGEB, or newt-m. we
PAT
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 26,405, dated December id, 1859; Reissue No. Lfiid. tinted August '7 1666.
To an whom it'may concern:
Be it kno wn that I, Mrs. ELIZABETH BELLIN- GER',of Mohawk, in the county of Herkimer and State of New York, have invented a new and useful SelfLighting Fir'e-Kindler; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full. clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable those skilled in the art to make and use the same.
The object of this improvement is to facilitate the ignition of fire-kindling materials, and especially of composite fire-kindling nlaterials,
' such as are described in the Letters Patent granted tome December 1, 1857.
The immediate agent which I use to ignite -the fire-kindlin-g is matehqiaste, which ,i
posit upon any convenient place upon the the kindler, and whenever friction is applied to the match-paste it will instantly ignite and set fire 'to the kindling material. A fire-kindier thus made I denominate a self-lighting; iirekindler.
.lfthe original substances composing the firekindler are not in their nature sufficiently infiamable to take fire readily when the matchpaste upon them is ignited, I increase their inflammability by depositing upon such materials, in counectionwith the match paste, a small quantity of a veryinflamniable adhesive or gum paste, which pastewill readily take fire when the match-paste is ignited, and'thus insure the ignition of the whole of the kindling material. Thisalso'fornis a selt lighting, fire-kindler.
Having already described the method of up plying the match-paste,'I will now describe the method of'making and applying the gun) paste.
I take kauri gum, eight crude camphor, four parts by weight, and pulserize them in any known way, such as by pounding the kauri gum iua mortar and rolling the caniphor with a pin on a board, I new mix these two substancestogether and stir them among two parts, by weight, of melted beeswax or myrtle-wax in a suit-abl vessel Jntil the whole is well incorporated together. dare must beexercised not to hare the melted wax tooihot; and to prevcntthis .iresultl pla'ii'c the Wax in a Warm-water hath, when the gums parts by weight,
are stirred in. Nixon i'iius completely mixed the read for use. i color it "Qlliliiifill or any fancy color mixed with so s of turpentine, and sometimes add a iit'tle oaisam lsolu to impart a fragrant odor to the gain when kindied but these are not essential. This gum paste in its soft state is now out on the common blocks of manufactured kindling material in small spots, one on each kiniiicr, and in a suitableplaee, and then on the top of this gum paste, or in clrse connection therewith, the matclrpaste is placed in spots, d reps, or patches in a similar manner.
\Vhen dry the itindlers so in do are ready fOFllSQ-RSfll1LilY-$T .T2d -a-.p e vfsaodpaper or other like: aierial and rub it 'agiidlyaoross the Sili'i'ziibfl oi the match sic, whirh thereby ignites, and its heat quickly kindle till} inliinninable gem-paste composition dos bed, which in flauies the kindler-bloch with certainty in ali cases.
The was enabios the iniiaininehle gums to adhere to the kindierhloch, and it also n");
Q 211'8 0 formed is tects theni and {H'ESOL'YLS their properties, as it" is a most eiiicient anti The materials of which the kindier-bloek is made need. not be described, as they are well known, being composed of sawdust and other" snbslances agglutinated together with resin, as described in my said patent of 1857.
-The iiictioitniateh paste need no be par ticularly described, as it is well known, and may be made of niter, peroxide ot' leadiand chiorate oi potash; hut .i prefer to use that which T. Belling-er & U0. employ on their matches without sulphur. My gum paste is suitable for any ot' the friction-match-paste compositions that may be used,
Having thus described my invention, l claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent as an improved article oi manufacture- A self-lighting tire-kindler made substan tially as herein described.
