NIT-ED STATES A`noten L. Me'AvoY AND ELIAS P. HUfreHINsoN, or BALTIMORE, MARYLAND,
ASSIGNEES'OF HUGH L. MCAVOY.
IMPROVED APPARATUS FOR CARBURETING AIR.
lSpecification vforming part of Letters Patent No. 45,456, dated December 13, 1.864 Reissue No. 2,069, (lated September 5, 1865.
To all whom 'it may concern Beit known that I, HUGH L. -MOAVOY, ot' the city and county of Baltimore, in the State of Maryland, have invented a new and Im- Ihe object of this invention 1s which has licen compounded of the oil and' air may be cond ucted'oii to be burned, while the `oil which has'not been mixed with the air is returned to the vessel or reservoir, all as will he hereinafter t'ully described.
The following description will enable others skilledin the art to which my invention appertains to fully understand and use the saine.
In the accompanying drawings, A represents a cylindrical vessel or reservoir, in which is mounted a wheel, B, having' a series oi'winding passages, Bf I3 B', each oi'which terminates at the center of the wheel and communicates with the interior ot' the vessel A, as clearly represented in Fig. 1. A central hollow shaft, C, carryinga pulley, C', may be connected with any suitable mechanismsuch as that ot a clockwfor producing the rotation ot' the 'wheel B. One oft-hc journals upon which said wheel rotates is constituted by the shaft C, audits oth-erjournal consists ot' a hollow neck er tube,
D, which has a sleeve-like bearing, B", the latto obtain a' more etfectual method of mixing together airv v ter being somewhat larger than the tube D, in order that a space may exist between the jonrnal and its bearing, for the purpose to be exat the center ot' the wheel B'wth the spaces B' throughI perforatious d. The tube D and for use through a pipe, E'.
F is a pipe communicating at its respective ends with the vesselA and chamber E, employed, in addition to 'other provisions, to ret-urn the oil from the chamber to the vessel.
when theapparatus is'in operation, to admit closed by a spring, hwhen the operation ceases, for the, purpose ot' excluding air, and thus proventing the evaporation ot' the oil or hydrocarbonaceous fluid.
Gr is a pipe through which the vessel A may be supplied with the hydrocarbon fluid or oil. The hollow shaft C, nearthe end at which it forms a journal forthe wheel B, communicates with the interior of the vessel A throughpert'oratious c.
being introduced into the'vessel A finds its level in the passages B' of the wheel or 'app-a. ratus B, andv when the oil has risen to about the horizontal center of the wheel B the vsupply should be shut oi', so as to permit the upper part of said wheel to be occupied by air, which enters the vessel A through the valve H in the manner described. As the wheel rotates and the entrances of the air-containing passages ofthe wheelB are presented downward, the oil which is taken in holds the air within the passagesv and forces it to the center ot' two columns or bodies of oil, and tho-motion of the wheel B agitates the oil and. air in such a.
way'that they become intimately mixed and plained. The tube or journal D communicates hollow shaft C lead into the gas receiver or chamber E, from which the gas is conducted off H is a valve adapted to open automatically i air to the interior of tlrejessel A, and todbe Operation The hydrocarbon tiuid or oil on the wheel B, together with the oil which the.
toward the center ot the wheel forces the oil chamber E. In going through the passages become a gaseous compound lbefore passing into the chamber E; Any oil which may enter the chamber E and the condensed vapor or gas therein ows back into the vessel. A through the space between the tube D audits bearing D', and should the oil become excessv ive in said chamber E, it Hows with increased rapidity intothe vessel A through the perfo- .rations e in the hollow shaft G and through the pipe F. The partial vacuum formed within the vessel. A by the action of `the wheel B permits the pressure from the extern al atmosphere to open the valve H, 'and the air then passes in to be carbureted in the manner described. As no Water is used in this process of generating gas, the contents'otl the apparatus cannot freeze. j
Having thus'described my invention, the following is what I claim as new and desire to secure by LettersPatent f 1. I( renerating gas by forcing air through or A2U le 2,069
lniiriu-g it with hydrocarbon fluid by vineens of a partially-submerged air-,forcing apparatus arranged, substantially as described, to pass the air through the Wheel.
2. Using an air-forcing apparatus' within a chamber suppjied with air through an automatic valve' or by any other means" adapted to y prevent the evaporation of the Huid when the apparatus is not in operation.
3. The employment, in connection with the vessel A and air-forcin g apparatus B, of a valve, II, adapted to automatically open when theapn paratus isin operation for thepurposeof supplying air to be carbureted, and to close when the operation is suspended in order to prevent Y*
