Description

Ff f
` qnently lock the nut upon ,present invention UNITED STATES EARL H. BncHBnnGnn, lor CLEVELAND, omo.
NUT noon.v
Original application filed November t4, 1916, Serial 234,014. Original No. 1,281,122, dated October 8,
Serial No. 555,635.
Torall whom vltmag/ concern: K
Be it known that I, EARL Brionennenn, p and a resi- {dent iof Cleveland, county of Cuyahoga, and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Nut Locks, of .which the following is a specilication, the principle of theinvention being herein explained and-.the best Inode in which I have `contemplated .applying that principle, so as t0 distinguish itifrom other inventions.
The ,present .invention relates lto improvements 1n means for locking a nut upon ,a bolt.
In .carrying out my invention, it is my purpose-to provide looking means .comprising two washer members, one of which eligaging with the bolt or with the superstructure vconnected by .the bolt, .the other .engaging with the nut andco-engaging with ,itheiirst mentioned washerin such a manner as tolock thefboltonthe washer and consev the bolt.
.It is also my purpose to produce a ylocking vmeans for retaining a nut upon abolt whic may be readily .operated to release the nut f.from the bolt when desired.4
With ,the above and other objects in view,
"the improvement'resides in the construction,
ycombination and arrangement of parts .set
iforth .in ,the following speciication'and fallwithin .the scope of the appended claims.
in l In the drawing:
Fig. l is a y erspective view illustrating .a nut and bolt ocked in accordance with the Fig. 2 is a sectional view .':Fipproximately Vvon .the line .2-2 of Fig. l;
ig. 3 is a perspective view .of one of the Fig. 4 is `a rear `elevation .O the saine; Fig. 5is a perspective view .of the second 'locking element; and Fig. -6 is a perspective view illustratinga slightly modified construction or1 the washer andthe bolt therefor.
In 4the `accompanying drawing, the .numeral l designates a bolt .of .any ordinary construction whichhas its shank, for a porlocking .elements ,tion of its `length provided with .the usual' threads and `,the ythreaded portion of .the
shank, in the .present instance, is grooved longitudinally as at 2. In some instances, .as will hereinafter be apparent, the groove 2 may be dispensed with. .The numeral 3 designates .the nut which 1s vscrewed upon --cally opposed points arly-toward the center of the washer, and .the diagonally opposed edges of the washer, Awith -,respect ,to the said slits is bent outwardly, ,providing lugs 7 which have their .inner edges disposed .at an inclination or angle ,as indicated by thenumerals A8. It is, .of :coursdfto be understood Ithat the washer the bolt before the nut ,any Ynumber iof sides.
Specification of Reissued Letters Patent. Reissued June 13, 1922.
No. 129,563. Renewed May 11, 1918,- Serial No.
the salte of convenience be hereinafter yre ferred to as washers, and while the same haveheen illustrated -as being rounded, the .said ,members may constructed of flat plates, if desired- 'Ille washer .4 `is provided with a lug 5a projecting ,within its Central opening, and :this .lng is adapted to be ireceived in the groove 2 -oit the lbolt l when the washer is arranged upon .the said bolt.. The inner face .Of the `Washer 4 Vis roughened or serrated as at@ whereby., k.when the same Contacts with the plate or .superstructure connectedby vthe bolt Aand is forced into tight ,engagement .with the structnre, the teeth or serrations .6 will enter'rthe structure and hold the zWaSller against movement. ,In `such instances., when fthe-nut and bolt are subjected Vvto only a' .slightdegree of vibration .the lug H.5e :oif'the :washer Zand the groove 2 in .the bolt l maybe dispensed with.
The 4washer ,4, preferably at diametri-- thereon is slittedangu- 4 is arranged upon 3 is screwed home npon the said bolt, and the homeward screwing of the nut contacting with I the washer will force the washer into tight engagement with the superstructure. Y
The second or ylocking washer 5 is centrally provided with an opening .of an irregular formation, ,that shown in thepdrawings being of what maybe termed a double heXagon formation ,and is indicated by the .numeral v9. The wall provided bythe opening v9, `it .willbenoted, comprises La plurality ,of `substantially .V-shaped .connecting members l0, @and the arrangement is such that Athe washer ,may ,be .applied to nuts having The washer 5, at di- Vainetricailly opposed points, is cut .angu-` -1918..
