To all whom may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES W. KENNEDY,
a citizen ofthe' United States, residing at Canton, in the county of Stark and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Apparatus for Dispensing h semisolid Substances, of which the following is a specifi cation.
My invention relates to improvements in apparatus for dispensing semi-solid substances and has more especial reference to an apparatus designed to dispense ice cream and the like and arranged to be placed beneath a counter of a soda fountain in a drug store or the like. The present invention bedispensing the ice cream or otherlsubstance contained in the machine in any desired quantity.
A still further object is to provide means for molding the ice cream or other substance into pleasing forms or shapes as the same is dispensed from the apparatus:
A still further object isto provid means for automatically cleaning the dispensing mechanism with each operation of the apparatus. i
, A still further object is the provision of an apparatus of the character referred to which is contained beneath the counter of a eration of the apparatus, the advertisements bemg changed or moved with each operation of the dispensing apparatus. 1 a
A still further object is the provision of .which' the'cream is kept out of contact with consists in the novel construction and ar-.
soda fountain or the like and which is easily to the view of the customer during the opthe outer air and dispensed from the apparatus without coming into contact with the hands of the operator, and in which the ice is kept at. all times sealed from theouter air,
thus making a great saving in-the amount of ice used and dispensing with the inconvenience of frequently refilling the tank with ice.
With these objects in view the'invention rangement of :parts, hereinafter described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and particularly pointed out in the appended claims, it being understood that various changes in the, form, proportions, size and minor details of-construction may be made within the scope of the appended claims,
without departing fromthe spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.
In th accompanying drawings: Figure .1 1s a front elevation of my improved apparatus for dispensing semi-solid substances and the like.

imilar numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts throughout the several figures of the drawings.
In the usual method of cream and the like it is customary to'keep the ice cream in a covered can or receptacle, the cover being removed and a ladle or disher inserted into the can to remove the.
desired quantity of cream therefrom. It
' will be readily seen that this method is both unsanitary and wasteful and that the cream thus dispensed is often times not in the proper condition to be served. For instance when the can or container is opened dust and dirt ay enter the can and be de posited upon t e contents thereof and it is necessary with each operation for gthe hand of the person serving'the cream to be inserted intothe can or container; The frequent opening of the can-or container also permits the outer atmosphere to contact with the cream, thus quickly melting the cream so that often times a quantity of cream in the bottom of. the container becomes too soft to be served. v
. With my improved apparatus for dispensmg ice cream or the like the cream isserved from a sealed receptacle without coming dispensing iceinto contact with the hands of the operator I and without requiring the opening of the receptacle after the cream has-been placed therein, until all of the cream has been served therefrom, thusobviating the disadvantages above enumerated.
Referring more especially to the constructionillustrated in the accompanying drawings; the numeral 1 indicates the casing.
within which the container is located and comprises a double walled, cork-lined tank comprising the inner and outer walls 2 and 3, respectively, between which wall is lo catedla layer 4 of cork or other suitable heat insulating material. This tank is open at its upper extremity and provided upon its forward face with the longitudinal cut-out portion 5 which forms a door way, which will be hereinafter described. Connected to each side of the door way and extending into the tank is a curved wall 6 preferably formed from a sheetof metal, said wall terminating at points spaced from the upper and lower extremities of the tank, supporting brackets bein provided upon the lower wall of the tank or supporting said curved wall. made in two sections, each of which is composed of spaced, metallic walls between which a cork packing is located. The tank is designed to be supported by means of the legs 9 beneath a counter 10 of a soda fountam or the like as best shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings. v
Located at the upper extremity of the curved wall 6 is the cap for the ice cream container, said cap being provided with the barrel portion 12, the extremity of which extends through the cut away portion 5 of the outer tank, a worm 13 being located through said barrel, the shaft 14 of said is soldered or otherwise suitably connected to the upper edge of the curved wall 6.
A relatively heavy plate 19 is connected to the front face of the tank 1 at the upper portion thereof and is provided with an aperture 20 of the diameter of'the interior of the barrel 12, said aperture arranged to register with the interior of said barrel. plate 21 of less width. than the plate 19 extends across the lower portion of the front .wall of said tank and upright plates 22 are located at each 'side of the. cut-out portion 5, thus formin a door-way within which.
the door 23 is ingedly mounted by-means The lid 8 for the tank is preferably scribe I said shaft extending throu tegral with the bottom of the tank or casingand located around said bear-- *ing. The screw threaded shaft 36 passes of the hinges 24- connected to one of the plates 22-, said door being formed of spaced walls between which cork packing 2'5 is located, a relatively heavy plate' 26 being connected to the outer face of said door in order to give the front of the tank or casing a finished appearance.
The container 27 is. formed of metal of cylindrical form and open 'at'both ends, an annular rib28 bein formed near thelower end thereof, said r1 being arranged .to be engaged by the locking cams 29, which are pivotally mounted'upon the curved wall-6 and arranged to support the container within the compartment formed by said curved wall, the upper extremity of the container being arranged to be seated within an annular oove 30 formed in the under sur-v face of the cap -11.
